Title: Through a Cracked Mirror
Author: Arcalian
Timeframe: OT
Characters: All the usual Original Trilogy suspects, plus some of the EU characters.
Genre: AU, dark
Keywords: Mirror universe
Summary: Everything you know is wrong. Up is down, black is white, good is evil, Sith and Jedi and the entire OT history is morally inverted.
****
For over a thousand generations the Empire had been the fountainhead of peace and justice. Before the Dark Times. Before the Confederacy.
The Jedi, those malicious terrorists of the Force, long thought dead, had returned to power and smashed the complacent Empire into a million helpless fragments. Now, with their endless army of droids to back them up and the pitiless greed of the various interstellar coprorations behind them, they crushed the galaxy in an iron fist that knew no mercy.
The surviving members of the Sith fled to the hidden corners of the galaxy, trying to regroup, recover, and start anew. But it was a very hard business....
****
CEO Leia Skywalker marched down the iron railings of the new super-warship, the
Dominus
. Soon the weapons systems of the warship would be complete, and no planet would be able to resist the Chairman.
But they had a most interesting prisoner to interrogate. She had been caught trying to flee from her rather profitable job in the Diamond Mining operations on Ilum, to who knew what obscure location.
A location that hid the remaining Sith, perhaps. Leia smiled at the thought. Now was a chance to wipe them out!
The prison door opened, revealing a battered and bruised girl slumped wearily in the corner. Despite the differences in hair and eye color, Leia could tell immediately that here was a child with fire and drive not unlike her own. Too bad she had not commited that drive to profit and power in the Confederacy. She could've been of use, not only to the Coprorate network, but to the Jedi themselves. A pity. This feisty young redhead, only a year or two younger than Leia herself, was a study in wasted opportunity.
"Mara Jade," Leia intoned as the door slid shut behind her. "You have abandoned your job and refused to pay your Confederate user fees--"
"Taxes!" Mara shouted back.
"User fees," Leia corrected wearily, "For six months. Now you jump from planet to planet. Not in a simple attempt to avoid us, or we might not have found you so quickly. But in a concentrated search for something...or
someone
."
Mara glared up at her but didn't respond.
"The Sith, perhaps," Leia prodded.
Mara twitched.
"Ah yes, we thought so. The Chairman foresaw it. Clearly you have not found them yet. But you may earn yourself amnesty," Leia went on, eyes brightening. "Tell us what planets and orbital sanctuaries you have eliminated as possibilites. Give us a narrower list of targets to hunt down. If you cooperate, you will be pardoned. If your information proves useful, you may even be rewarded! Money, a coroporate domain of your own, perhaps even your own planet! Think on it Jade, the Confederacy is generous to those who are worthy!"
The truly frightening thing, Mara reflected as she stared into Leia's eyes, was that she really beleived it. The high-ranking Confederates were true believers in their nightmare world, fanatic devotees of their twisted notion of utopia.
"I am truly sorry," Mara answered with sarcastic mock-politeness, "But I will not help you kill your fath--"
Leia shut Mara off with a ringing slap. "Do NOT call him that!" she shrieked. "My father is dead to me! He could have had everything, and he betrayed us for...some foolish notion of pride!"
"Not pride," Mara said with painful effort. "Prinicple."
"No Mara," Leia sighed and shook her head. "The principle is on our side, both moral and profit. You have three days to change your mind. After that I will let the mind probe do it's work, and instead of pardon and reward, we will simply execute you."
"You're insane," Mara said, staring at her.
Leia rolled her eyes at the girl's naievete. "Three days," she repeated. "Think about it."
She turned and left Mara there, the door sliding shut behind her with a loud clang.
****
The winds howled across the surface of Utapau. Hurricane-force in strength, they tore up anything and everything they could reach. What life there was on this planet was located in the giant sinkholes that were sanctuaries from the wind. There was, in truth, a thriving economy there.
Which was exactly why the Sith avoided that safe haven, and had built a small, secure bunker underground, miles below the wind-scoured surface, but nowhere near the sinkholes.
The dim green lighting was designed to help Anakin Skywalker rest and meditate, but peace would not come to him. Two of the fingers on his right hand were synthetic plastic; held up to the light you could see through them. His left eye was gone, replaced by a cybernetic implant that glowed a dull blue.
In the old days they had called him "The Hero with No Doubt." What a joke. For he was plagued with doubts now. When had it all gone wrong? His children taken from him by that damned Kenobi, becoming heartless profitmongers in the Confederacy, and enforcers of the mad zealot Jedi Inquisition as well. The stately, elegant Empire they served, uprooted and destroyed. He and his old mentor and friend survived, that he knew for certain. How many others were left? How many other Sith had survived the Inquisition that began with the Droid Wars, and the hated, dreadful Order 101? Fewer and fewer each year, that was certain. The only hope lay with him and his old master.
But Palpatine was far away, hiding somewhere closer to the Galatcic Core. Beyond that, Anakin knew not where his friend and mentor was.
The Force had told him that soon one would seek him, one that he could teach the true ways of the Force and attempt to rescue his children from darkness. But first she had to find him.
And he had the sinking feeling that whoever it was would never find him.
At that, he chuckled to himself. He could almost hear Palpatine as a whisper on the Force.
Confidence, young one
, he would always say.
Believe in yourself
.
But Anakin found it harder and harder each day.
****
Luke Skywalker had returned triumphant from another combat run with the Shadow Squadron, that small fleet of Trident fighters that was feared by all enemies of the Confederacy. They needed no capital ship to back them up; their own battle prowess was relentless. Whole Seditionist fleets they had destroyed on their own.
But he knew that was not enough for his masters anymore. They wanted to move forward with the extermination of the Sith.
The Inquisition must be fulfilled
, that was what Obi-Wan was always saying.
So it was when he settled his personal flyer by the Coroporate Council tower on Geonosis, he was of heavy heart.
Seeing him coming, the native insectoid weaponmasters of the planet bowed and scraped and got out of his way. He acknowledged them casually, not really interested in such prostrations of subservience. He wanted to be back
out there
, in his Trident fighter, blowing things up.
Obi-Wan stood by the turboshaft, expressionless.
"Master?" Luke greeted him uncertainly.
Obi-Wan gave a curt nod. "The Chairman is expecting us," he said without preamble. Luke merely nodded, knowing that argument or even simple discussion was not wise, not at the moment. They stepped into the elevator pod which shot upwards.
Luke risked a glance at his Master, but Obi-Wan didn't even look at him. He sighed. There were times when he and his master could have stimulating conversations. But now was clearly not such a time.
It was a pity his "charming" parents had killed old Dooku, he reflected. Now there was a man who appreciated a pleasant chat. The man had actually been kind to Luke, something Obi-Wan could hardly muster anymore. Not that Luke blamed him, what with all the pressure the Chairman was always putting him under.
Between the Seditionists and the Sith, it was a small wonder they were making any profit at all, much less expanding operations beyond the Galaxy.
The entered the Corporate meeting chamber, but all the familiar faces were absent. That too was a pity; Luke missed the Twi-lek courtesan guild the most.
But clearly the Chairman wanted to see them alone. This was serious.
He was seated in his elevated chair at the far side of the council meeting table, turned away and in shadow.
Even though his back was turned, Obi-Wan and Luke bowed low.
After a pause, Obi-Wan dared comment. "You sent for us, Chairman?"
"Requested your presence, I did," the Chairman answered without turning around. "Leia, reported in has. A Force candidate, she has found. Reluctant to divulge her suspected hiding places of the surviving Sith, the child is. Soon use the mind probe, Leia will."
Luke absorbed that in thoughtful silence. His sister had found a candidate? And perhaps a link to the Sith? There might be an end to this pointless conflict, at last!
"What would you have us do, Chairman?" Obi-Wan said.
Slowly the Chairman's seat turned around. He looked down at them with his alien eyes. "Go to the Dominus, you will. Attempt to break the child with your powers in the Force, you shall. The surviving Sith, must found and exterminated be. Our future, depends on it does. Forseen it I have."
"As you command, Chairman Yoda," Luke and Obi-Wan chorused, and bowed low.....

Very AU indeed. So the Sith are the good guys and the bad guys are interested in profit and control? Interesting. I can see where this could get complicated very quickly.
I wonder what will happen when Luke meets Mara....
Please PM me with updates.

Clangorous alarms ran through the
Dominus
. Leia raised for the prison bay, to find it already empty. Of course it was.
She swore vehemently and raced for the hangar deck. Racing down the corridor with all the speed the Dark Side could grant, she could hear the reports of the torpedo guns. She readied her plasma lance. Perhaps she could arrive before....
But the thought died unifnished as she entered the deck and saw a stolen Trident flyer shoot through the atmospheric forcefield and out into space.
"Bridge!" she shouted into her communicator. "Open fire on that--"
But the Trident shot out into space and, in a flicker of pseudomotion, vanished into lightspeed.
"--never mind. Extrapolate it's course, and hurry!"
She had a sick feeling in the pit of her stomach. She had just gotten word, mere minutes before, that Luke and Obi-Wan were on their way.
What would be done to her if she had not captured or killed Mara by the time they found her, she shuddered to think.
How had the foolish girl escaped? How?!?
But of course, in truth she knew how. The Pale Side of the Force, blast the girl for her simpering sentimentality.
Leia punched the bulkhead once, twice, three times, before drawing her own blood and cursing in pain and frustration.
***
Mara had dared not try to get her own ship back; doubtless they had reprogrammed it's CPU by now. So instead she had stolen a Trident fighter, the onboard targeting droid SV-7 squealing in rage and fury until she had shut it down.
Piloting these vicious stingships was not her forte. She could do it, but not well. She had been forced to make a random jump, so the
Dominus
would not find her. She had no idea where she was going. Without the proper calculations, she might very well bounce too close to a star's gravity well; or her path might traverse through the event horizon of a black hole, and that would be the end of her.
But such did not happen, and eventually she came out of lightspeed near an uninspiring system in the outer rim.
But as she did so, the SV-7 droid woke up and sent a malicious code through the navicomputer and drives, causing them to burn out and sending her stolen fighter tumbling helplessly towards the planet below....

The Pale side of the Force. I love your descriptions and how they make the universe skewed. Really shakes everything up.

I, for one, do not think the problem was that the band was down.I think that the problem may have been
that there was a Stonehenge monument on the stage that was in danger of being crushed by a dwarf.

WOW!
So Anak and Porpoise are goody people.
But Wan and Yo are bad.
I never got this far into the saga before. Where's Ham?
I like this. I never knew Porpoise can be adorable in a few sentences.

The stolen trident-fighter had created an ungainly, unpleasant carbon smear on the surface of the windswept planet. The tenacious, brutal winds tore at it. They were almost, but not quite, strong enough to rip it free of the surface. But they
were
strong enough to put out the fires of it's burning.
A small, unobtrusive elevator shaft punched it's way out of the wind scoured ground. The blue robed figure stared out at the crashed craft from within the shaft's safe confines, feeling the life within in the Force, marvelling that the one within had survived at all.
The Force does not do, yet nothing is not done
, the figure thought to himself.
He took a tenative step into that eternal gale, calling upon the Force to stabilize him, so that he was not simply ripped away into the air.
Each step towards the doomed craft was a struggle, but struggle was something the figure was very familiar with.
The hatch had been fused shut by the crash. The blue-clad figure would have simply used the Force to open it, but he could not divide his attention between opening the hatch and stopping the wind from literally blowing him away.
So, with difficulty, he drew his hand guard and ignited his golden plasma lance, and carved an opening in the shipwreck.
---
Once inside, the blue-robed figure saw Mara unconcious, wrapped around the guidance system, blood dribbling from her mouth.
He winced, concerned, but putting his hands on her shoulders and probing her with the Force, he found the injuries were not too severe.
The SV-7 targeting droid angrily activated itself and started making accusing beeps and electronic shrieks.
"Your pilot will survive," the blue-robed figure told the droid, understanding it's robotic speech perfectly. "But I'm afraid the fighter will not fly agian."
SV-7 unleashed an electronic yowl of anger. One spider-like limb pulled free of a data access port, and prepared to fire a plasma bolt at him.
Unsurprised, he moved sideways then inwards, dodging the shots. As he closed, the droid adjusted it's aim, planning to kill Mara instead.
"No!" the blue-robed figure shouted. A gesture in the force caused the bolt to go wild, into the ceiling. Before it could aim again, he closed the distance and slapped a restraining bolt on the droid's blood-red dome. There was a shriek of protest, and then the droid went quiet.
"I'll reprogram you later," the figure sighed wearily, and went to free Mara from the wreckage.
Carrying her back through the winds to the secure elevator shaft would be no easy task, but with the Force he knew it could be done.
---
Mara slowly came back to consciousness. She blinked her eyes, and winced feeling a pain in her jaw, and an echoing migrane in her skull.
"Sit at peace, girl," a strong yet kindly voice said. "You've had a bumpy ride."
Mara focused on the sad face inside the blue cowl. One natural blue eye and one glowing azure droid eye looked back. She immediately knew who it was.
"Anakin?!? Anakin Skywalker?!? I have found you! The Force guided me to you!!"
She embraced him, babbling incoherently into his shoulder.
Anakin smiled his sad smile.
