Title:
Undue Circumstances
Author:
Kelia
Characters:
A/P, Palpatine, Obi-Wan
Timeframe:
Pre-ROTS
Genre:
Suspense/Drama
A/N:
This story replaces the events of ROTS. I'll be updating every
other
week, however, if you'd like a PM, just say the word.
Chapter One
Palpatine silently studied the Petition of 2,000 before him, a frown creasing his normally placid face. “Are you certain this is authentic?” he asked in a low tone.
“It is,” Sly Moore responded coolly. “I found the original document in Senator Organa’s office,” she paused, the corners of her mouth twitching with pleasure. “Just where I was informed it would be.”
Palpatine inhaled deeply as he leaned back in his chair, folding his hands casually in his lap. He was not surprised Bail Organa would be behind something like this. He’d known for months the Senator was growing increasingly unhappy with his policies and growing power. What did surprise him, however, was the amount of support Organa had managed to gain, a feat Palpatine was convinced he couldn’t have done himself.
“Were you informed of whom Organa was working with?” he asked, a hard edge to his tone.
“Working with?” Sly repeated in confusion. “What makes you think -,”
“Organa is a well liked man,” Palpatine replied in annoyance. “But opposition of his resistance to my policies has grown since the beginning of the war. There is no way he could have mounted this much support by himself.”
“I…I hadn’t considered that,” Sly replied in an embarrassed tone. “I can go back to -,”
“No.” Palpatine held up one hand, his eyes narrowing. “I’m certain I know just who it was that helped him.”
“Shall I have them brought to your office?” Sly asked, a hint of hope in her voice. “I’m we can garner a confession from them both...eventually.”
Palpatine shook his head. “I have something much better planned,” he announced with a triumphant grin, “something that will not only deal with the traitors, but will discourage anyone from disagreeing with anything I ever do again.”
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
One Month Later
Anakin sighed wearily as the shuttle finally touched down on Chancellor Palpatine’s private landing dock. He and Obi-Wan had finally received their orders to return to Coruscant after five long months on the battlefield. Anakin had been looking forward to a long, hot shower before his debriefing with the Jedi Council.
‘And a quiet reunion with Padmé,”
he thought with a faint smile.
But the summons from Palpatine thwarted those plans.
“If the matter is so urgent, why would the Chancellor need to see you alone?” Obi-Wan asked with concern.
“I don’t know, Master,” Anakin replied, frowning. “He’s never done anything like this before. I wonder what could be wrong.”
“I don’t like this, Anakin,” Obi-Wan stated in a firm voice. “If the Chancellor has a problem, he has a staff and security to handle it. He shouldn’t be turning to you.”
“Maybe he needs a Jedi’s help,” Anakin argued defensively, a wave of anger washing over him.
“Then he should request it from the Council,” Obi-Wan replied. “You are not at his beck and call.”
“I don’t mind - ”
“That’s not the point, Anakin,” Obi-Wan interrupted. “We…you’ve just returned from war. You need time to decompress before being given another problem to deal with. I think you should send the Chancellor a message you’ll see him in the morning…no,” he paused as he studied Anakin’s worn-out expression. “Tomorrow afternoon.”
“What if it’s an emergency?”
“There is nothing more important than your health,” Obi-Wan pointed out. “And right now you are too tired to do anything other than prepare for the debriefing.”
Anakin inhaled deeply as he considered Obi-Wan’s words. While he was exhausted, he knew Palpatine wouldn’t request his immediate presence unless something was wrong. Very wrong.
“I just want to find out what is going on,” he finally said with an apologetic smile.
“I can’t stop you,” Obi-Wan sighed. “But I think you should wait -,”
“I appreciate your concern, Master,” Anakin said, reaching up to squeeze his shoulder. “But I’ll be fine. This probably won’t take more than a half hour tops.”
“It had better not,” Obi-Wan warned. “You know how the Council gets when you are late.”
Anakin chuckled at his Master’s last words as he walked down the landing ramp and made his way into the Senate building. He trusted Obi-Wan would be able to stall the rigid Council members should the need arise.
Walking through the massive hallways, he suddenly became aware of the pained expressions and hushed whispers of those he passed by.
‘Odd,’
he thought as a wave of fear washed over him.
‘What could have caused such a reaction in everyone?
“Knight Skywalker, may I have a moment of your time?”
Anakin turned in surprise to see Senator Mon Mothma by his side.
“Senator,” he greeted formally. “I’m actually on my way to see the Chancellor -,”
“I promise I won’t keep you,” she replied, her voice tinged with urgency. “But I do need to speak with you.”
“All right,” Anakin agreed. “How can I help you?”
“Thank you,” she replied, gesturing for him to follow her.
Anakin’s heart began to pound with anticipation as he watched Mon Mothma quickly glance around before leading him behind a massive pillar.
“Have you heard of Senator Organa’s murder?” she asked bluntly, her eyes filling with tears.
Anakin’s mouth dropped open in shock. “Wha…what? he gasped.
“I didn’t think so,” she sighed, pausing to wipe away her tears.
“I…I’m sorry,” Anakin breathed. “I just returned to Coruscant less than a half hour ago. I…I had no idea -,”
“It happened three weeks ago,” Mon Mothma continued in a hushed tone. “Right here in his office, if you can believe that.”
“You don’t?”
“No.” She shook her head adamantly. “And when the Senate requested viewing the security tapes, the Chancellor claimed they malfunctioned.”
“Perhaps they did,” Anakin offered weakly, not really believing it himself. “Do they have any suspects.”
“Not exactly,” she replied, pausing to study him closely. “They’ve arrested and convicted his supposed killer.”
“That’s good news,” Anakin replied smiling with relief.
“I doubt you’ll agree when you hear whose been convicted,” Mon Mothma replied somberly as she placed a sympathetic hand on his arm.
“What do you mean?” Anakin asked, dread washing over him. “Who was it?”
“Senator Amidala.”

Chapter 2
Anakin stumbled backwards as if physically struck.
“Wha…what?” he gasped.
Mon Mothma squeezed his arm tightly, her eyes filling with tears. “I’m sorry to have to tell you like this,” she whispered. “I know you and Senator Amidala are good friends but I knew you would want to know.”
“It’s ridiculous!” Anakin flared, pulling his arm away and beginning to pace. “How could anyone suspect, even for a minute, Padmé would have anything to do with Organa’s murder?”
“Most of us don’t believe it,” Mon Mothma pointed out, shaking her head sadly. “But the evidence…was damning.”
“What evidence?”
Mon Mothma paused before answering. She was one of the very few who were aware of Padmé’s close friendship with Anakin Skywalker, though she had always suspected they were closer than anyone thought. Perhaps too close given his commitment to the Jedi Order and Padmé’s to the Senate. Anakin’s occasional lack of control over his temper was not unknown to her either and she hated having to test it now.
“Padmé was seen running from Bail’s office by the security officer who discovered his body,” she explained. “Seconds later.”
“That’s it?” Anakin ran his fingers through his hair, reaching for a possible explanation. “She probably found him first and was going to get help.”
“That would be a possibility,” Mon Mothma began. “Except Padmé denied running from his office and insisted he was still alive when she left him.”
“Then the guard killed him,” Anakin stated flatly, his eyes narrowing. “Which one was it?”
“Anakin,” Mon Mothma placed a warning hand on his shoulder. “May I call you Anakin?”
Anakin blinked at her in disbelief. “What?”
“It’s impolite to call someone by their first name without first being invited to do so,” she explained, amusement lacing her voice. “Not to mention unprofessional.”
Anakin’s mouth dropped open. “Call me whatever you want,” he finally breathed. “That’s hardly important right now.”
“Thank you,” she tightened her grip. “The guard in question has been with the Senate for decades and has an impeccable reputation.”
“What difference does that make?”
“It makes all the difference in the Galaxy,” Mon Mothma replied tightly. “The guard had no motive and his blaster hadn’t been recently fired.”
Anakin sighed.
“Did anyone consider suicide?”
Mon Mothma arched one eyebrow. “Senator Organa was not suicidal,” she replied icily. “And even if he had been, his religious beliefs would have prevented him from taking his own life. Besides,” she continued. “He was shot four times.”
“I still don’t believe it,” Anakin resumed pacing. “There has to be some other explanation.”
“I agree,” Mon Mothma nodded.
“The guard lied.” Anakin abruptly stopped moving, turning to face Mon Mothma. “Where is he?” he asked, clenching his jaw.
“Anakin, it will do you no good to seek out the guard,” Mon Mothma warned.
“Why not? He lied and I can convince him to tell the truth.”
“I’m sure you can,” she replied a bit taken back by the vehemence in his tone. “But that won’t help Padmé. There was other evidence presented -,”
“What other evidence?”
Mon Mothma bit her lip, wishing she didn’t have to be the one to tell him. “It was Padmé’s blaster that killed Bail.”
“Someone must have stolen it from her then,” he retorted. “Was a motive offered? Or are we supposed to believe Padmé woke up one day and decided to kill her good friend for no reason?”
“Yes, and before I tell you and I want you to promise me you will be calm.”
Icy fear rushed through his veins.
“Of course,” he replied, casually shrugging his shoulders.
“The motive offered was an affair gone bad -,”
“WHAT!!!”
“Anakin, please,” Mon Mothma grasped his arm in a tight vise. “Keep your voice down. I’m taking a risk even talking to you about this.”
“I’m sorry,” Anakin sighed, taking a deep breath. “But that is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. Padmé would never be interested in Senator Organa romantically”
“And vise versa,” Mon Mothma added. “However, a data pad containing letters supposedly exchanged between the two was produced -,”
“Anyone could have created that,” Anakin pointed out. “And planted it where it would be discovered.”
“I know,” Mon Mothma replied. “However that combined with Padmé’s…,” she paused offering a silent prayer to the gods to Anakin would be able to handle the news she was about to break, “delicate condition was enough to convince the jury.”
“Her what?” Anakin asked in a hollow tone.
Mon Mothma gazed at him knowingly.
“No,” he gasped, shaking his head from side to side as the realization finally hit him.
“I’m afraid so,” Mon Mothma whispered, patting his arm.
“That…that…that doesn’t…that doesn’t mean Senator Organa is the father,” he stammered.
“True,” Mon Mothma agreed. “But Padmé refused to name another so the jury was left to draw their own conclusions.”
“Oh Force,” Anakin closed his eyes, his hands opening and closing into tight fists. Their love had condemned her.
“I…I…I need to see her,” he gasped.
“I’m afraid that’s not possible.”
“Why not?” he flared. “Where is she?”
“I don’t know,” Mon Mothma admitted. “The Chancellor decided to keep her exact location a secret. All I know is that she is being held in solitary confinement until a transport us arranged for her permanent placement.”
“Permanent?” Anakin echoed.
Mon Mothma nodded sadly. “She’s been sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.”
Anakin froze in horror.
“And the baby?”
“Will most likely be sent to her family on Naboo,” Mon Mothma replied. “Assuming the prison she’s sent to bothers to contact them and make the arrangements.”
“I..I…I’ve got to help her,” Anakin breathed, his mind already considering his options.
“I’d hoped you would.” Mon Mothma smiled slightly. “Though I must warn you, whatever you chose to do must be done with discretion.”
“What do you mean?” He asked. “The Jedi frequently investigate -,”
“I’m afraid they can’t officially do anything this time,” Mon Mothma replied. “The Galaxy is already suspicious the Order is too close to the Chancellor,” she quickly explained at Anakin’s confused expression. “If they get involved and overturn the conviction, it will only heighten the suspicion and destroy what is left of the Jedi’s credibility.”
“We can’t just let her rot away in prison!” Anakin snapped. “Maybe Palpatine can help.”
Mon Mothma gazed at him silently before answering. Did he really believe what he was saying? “I doubt that,” she murmured.
“What do you mean by that?” Anakin demanded.
“Only that the Chancellor did nothing to defend Senator Amidala before the trial and I fail to see a reason for him to help her now.”
“Nothing?” Anakin shook his head in disbelief. “How can that be? Palpatine has been a good friend to Padmé from the first day she entered politics.”
“Apparently he had his reasons,” Mon Mothma answered, holding up one hand to ward off an interruption, “and no, I don’t know them. I only know the security team he assigned to investigate the murder decided Padmé was guilty from the beginning and only focused on her.”
“And that didn’t arouse suspicion?”
“Not after the security guard reported seeing her running from Bail’s office,” she whispered, glancing quickly around to make sure they were sill unobserved. “You should start with the guard, but discretely and calmly,” she paused. “Perhaps Master Obi-Wan can assist you.”
“I thought you said it wouldn’t do any good to get him to admit he lied.”
“It won’t get Padmé out of prison,” Mon Mothma explained. “But if he tells you who put him up to it, you may be able to begin to discredit the evidence that convicted her.”
Anakin nodded silently, torn between his desire to hunt down the guard who’s lie put Padmé in jail and his overwhelming need to see her and hold her and reassure her he would make things right.
“We’ll talk to the guard,” he finally said, gazing intently at Mon Mothma. “But first, I need to see Padmé.”
“I told you, I don’t know where -,”
“I will find her,” he breathed in determination as he turned on his heel, sprinting for the landing dock.

Aargghhh! I can feel Anakin's frustration literally pulsing off the screen
. Poor Padme found to be pregnant and accused of an affair for refusing to name Anakina s the father--how diabolical of Palpatine to use that
. Mind you, a silver lining is that Anakin is now squarely on the opposite side of an opinion from the evil wannabe emperor!
Loved it. More more more!

Great update. Anakin's frustration and fear are very evident. It will be interesting to see how he handles this.
“We’ll talk to the guard,” he finally said, gazing intently at Mon Mothma. “But first, I need to see Padmé.”
“I told you, I don’t know where -,”
“I will find her,” he breathed in determination as he turned on his heel, sprinting for the landing dock.
I'm sure he will.

Uh-oh that's right Anakin, Palpatine didn't even help Padme and just pronounced her guilty.
And that was fabulous how you wrote that with Padme being pregnant and her not telling the jury who's the father made everyone believe that she was having an affair with him. Absolutely wicked!
Great post and thanks for the PM!
