This is a story that came to mind while watching ROTS. The final days before Sidious revealed himself and became emperor. What was going on in his head?

The Dark Lord sat staring out at the vast landscape of Coruscant, not that there was any land. The endless lanes of traffic zooming by all around, up above his line of sight, and down below as well. The towers of buildings touching the sky and reaching up above some of the clouds that dotted the sky. Some called this place, “The planet that never sleeps”. They were right. Somewhere on the planet something was always going on. From the vast, shady depths of the underworld, to the industrial place, activity was constant. A planet-wide city demanded constant attention from the air scrubbers and weather control programs.

A storm was gathering on the far horizon, and moving closer. This storm wasn’t part of the program, he knew. This storm that was brewing was a result of the Force. The storm grew in anticipation of the coming battle. His own anticipation grew as well. Years of careful planning and a millennia of hiding were about to come to fruition. The Sith would come out of the shadows and make themselves known at last.

He shook his head to clear his thoughts, and the storm vanished. It had been a vision. The Force had shown him of the storm to come and the darkness that would follow. His plans would succeed. His careful rise to power, from humble senator of Naboo, then Chancellor of the Republic would be rewarded with ultimate power. His grooming of many different apprentices would finally result with the perfect apprentice.

He had used the techniques he studied from his former master to create life from the midi-chlorians. That child had been born with more potential in the Force than the most powerful Jedi on record. He had struck up a friendship with that boy in his first years as Chancellor and had grown to think of him more like a son. He trusted the boy implicitly. As such, he carefully began to groom him to take the roll as his Sith apprentice.

The conversation he had with the boy the other night had closed the deal. There was now doubt in Darth Sidious’ mind now that Anakin Skywalker would soon become his apprentice. He would have to be careful, no doubt, because of the vast potential the boy possessed. However, the risk was well worth the risk of an early downfall. It was inevitable. Someday he would be killed by his apprentice. It was the Sith way. He only hoped that he could see the full potential of Anakin realized before that day.

Sidious turned away from the window and returned to his seat. He studied the holodisplay before him. In his role as Chancellor, he had to play the goody two shoes part. His alter ego of Dantius Palpatine had been elected Chancellor of the Republic 13 years earlier. He had to maintain that role until just the right moment. He did not yet know when it would come, but it would be soon. Yet, until it came, he had to make sure he remained in power. Hence, the war dragged on.

A flicker in the Force caught his attention. This flicker he could not ignore. The flicker told him it was time to meditate. Whenever he got this flicker, he knew more was going to be revealed. The plan would unfold more before him. This flicker however, was different. He KNEW, the was the final part of the plan. The downfall of the Jedi was at hand. The Sith would once again rule the galaxy. He shut down the display and went to his secret chamber to claim his destiny.

His feeling about the flicker the Force gave him was correct. He indeed received a very welcome and anticipated vision. His plans for galactic domination were complete. They just needed to be carried out.

He needed to make sure the key player was in place. He went over to the holocomm and activated it. Very soon after, the image of a grotesque figure appeared. It had a bony white covering over its face and yellow eyes that peered out. The rest of his original body was covered up by protective droid coverings and his limbs had been replaced with the latest upgrades. This was General Grievous, leader of the droid armies of the separatists.

“Yes, Lord Sidious.” His voice was accented and a little raspy with the tinny quality of a droid vocabulator added. He also had a nasty cough that surfaced from time to time. Sidious was glad that this pawn in his plan would soon be disposed of.

“Are all the separatist leaders with you on Mustafar?” Sidious asked in his raspy, dark voice.

“They are my master, though they are suspicious and anxious.”

“It is of no concern to you. Just make sure they stay there. My new apprentice will be coming soon. He will take over from there.” Though he did not have an apprentice at the moment, he was certain Anakin would succumb to his charms.

“Beware, General. The Jedi Council had sent Obi-Wan Kenobi to kill you.”

“I shall make preparations right away to deal with him.”

“Excellent. Things are going according to plan then. That will be all General.”

“Yes Lord Sidious.” He bowed his head and the image of his master disappeared.

How did the council know he was here? He had told no one of his plan to come here before he alerted the Separatist leaders to meet here. Only Sidious had known since he was the one that sent him. The only answer was that somehow, his master had alerted the Jedi. That meant he had betrayed Grievous.

That didn’t matter to him. Betrayal was the way of the Sith. He was technically just a pawn in the grander scheme of things. However, he had no plans of dying. He would prove to Sidious why he was the leader of the droid army. He would survive and carefully plot against him. Caution would be well warranted. This was no ordinary Sith though. This was the most powerful Dark Lord the galaxy had seen in at least 200 years.

That power had remained hidden until now though. The Sith had to keep their existence a secret from the Jedi until just the right time, or risk extinction.

Grievous marveled at how his master had planned everything leading up to now. Patience was not normally a quality of the Sith, he knew, yet for them to remain in hiding for a millennia required a lot of it.

Grievous called the commander of the droid army that went with him everywhere.

“Be on the lookout for Obi-Wan Kenobi. He is on his way here.”

“Yes sir, “ came the drone reply.

Grievous also commed his special elite guard droids. Their special staffs would come in handy against a Jedi, since they could not be cut through by lightsabers. They were also well trained in the Jedi arts. Just as he was. Dooku had done well to train him. Now he was prepared for Obi-Wan. Now that waiting game began. Kenobi’s lightsaber would make a very welcome addition to his collection.
