Part 1

He had not seen Obi-Wan this angry in quite a while. His former Padawan had become quite adept at controlling his emotions, but now, the man was struggling to speak a civil word to the Jedi Master.

“How dare you!” Obi-Wan growled at the Jedi Master. “How dare you go to the Council and question my abilities as Anakin’s Master.”

“I was concerned,” Qui-Gon countered, trying to placate the Knight.

“Concerned about what?”

“That it was becoming too much for you. You are under a great deal of pressure, especially from the Council and I was worried that it was interfering with your relationship with Anakin.”

“I assure you that you have nothing to be worried about, Qui-Gon. I am quite capable of handling myself and training Anakin.”

The icy bite in Obi-Wan’s words made Qui-Gon shudder. “Obi-Wan, the Council shouldn’t have placed the burden of his training upon you. They should have…”

“Have what, Master Jinn? The Council should have let you train him?”

“Obi-Wan, I…’

“No, no more excuses. You once told me that a Jedi accepts responsibilities for his own actions. Was that a lie?”

“No.”

“Then why can’t you admit that what you did was wrong?” Obi-Wan demanded to know.

“Like I said, Obi-Wan, I thought I was doing what was best for you.”

“You can’t say it, can you? You can’t say that you were wrong?”

“Obi-Wan, I…”

Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn started awake at the now familiar sound of the shrill alarm of the machine that monitored the vital signs of the man lying in the bed. Shaking off the remnants of his dream, he stood up and pressed the button that would stop the irritating noise. Qui-Gon leaned over the agitated form, placing a comforting hand on the man’s shoulder.

“It’s all right, Obi-Wan,” the Jedi whispered, “You’re not alone. Why don’t you open your eyes so you can see for yourself? You know that you’ve been sleeping through some of my best lectures. Of course, I’m sure that you’ve heard them all before. So, if you don’t want to hear them again, you better wake up.”

The young knight remained still, except for the occasional tremor of his hand. Qui-Gon sat back down and leaned back in his chair, studying his former Padawan. Time was supposed to heal all wounds, but it also sometimes created new ones. It had only been five years since Obi-Wan’s knighting and within that time, the Jedi had hoped the bond of friendship that they shared would continued to grow. But sadly, that had not happened.

The Jedi’s musings were interrupted as the door opened and Anakin Skywalker burst into the dimly lit room. The young man was slightly out of breath by the time he got to Obi-Wan’s side. Qui-Gon watched with the teen with interest as he reached for the Knight’s hand.

“Master, I’m here,” the youth softly reassured the man. “Can you hear me? I know that you’re scared, but you really are safe.”

Qui-Gon silently urged Obi-Wan to listen to his Padawan and wake up. The Knight’s illness had been difficult on the youth, but Anakin’s belief in his Master’s recovery was unwavering. It had taken a tragedy for Qui-Gon to fully appreciate the relationship between Obi-Wan and Anakin. He had come to realize that the two younger men belonged together as Master and Padawan. He no longer questioned the Force in this matter, but the Jedi couldn’t help but wonder if it was too little, too late.

“He must have been dreaming,” Qui-Gon surmised.

“He wasn’t dreaming,” Anakin corrected. “He was scared.”

“I see,” the Jedi Master softly answered. “Could you sense him?”

“A little. Enough to know that he was terrified. Up until recently fear was something that I never truly sensed from him,” the Padawan shamefully admitted. “I didn’t think he could be afraid of anything.”

“Does it make him weaker in your eyes?”

The Jedi Master met Anakin’s frosty glare with his own questioning eyes. He had unintentionally struck a nerve with the young man. Qui-Gon was impressed how quickly the teen managed to tamp down his anger. Obi-Wan had definitely been working with the boy.

“Of course not,” Anakin coolly replied. “It only makes him more human. Unlike you and the Council, I don’t expect him to be anything but himself.”

“I think that’s a rather harsh assessment, don’t you?”

“No, I don’t, Master Jinn. I think it’s a fairly accurate one. For some reason, everyone places more expectations on my Master than any other Jedi and he accepts it without question.” Anakin lightly squeezed Obi-Wan’s hand. With his free hand, he brushed his fingertips against his Master’s bearded face. “You’re going to have to start learning the word ‘no’, Master. Everybody demands a piece of you and you give and give until there’s nothing left. When you wake up, things will be different, I promise.”

Qui-Gon listened to the boy’s solemn vow. The bond between Master and Apprentice was a strong one. The one he had shared with Obi-Wan had been special and it was evident to the Jedi that the bond between Obi-Wan and Anakin was just as meaningful. He had always known that Obi-Wan would make a good Master. So why had he planted the seeds of doubt in his former Padawan’s mind? Why had he tried to interfere with Anakin’s training? He had created the rift between himself and Obi-Wan and now it was up to him to reach across the chasm that was separating them.

The Jedi Master knew Anakin was right. Things were going to be different for them all. He would no longer add to Obi-Wan’s burdens, he would help the young Knight carry them instead.

“Yes, my friend,” the Jedi quietly agreed, “things will be different.”

“I think it would be a good idea if you kept your distance from my Master.”

Qui-Gon was taken back by the teen’s bitterness. “Anakin, I…”

“No!” he sharply retorted. “You’re responsible for what happened to Obi-Wan. You and the Council! You all were supposed to be his friends! He needed your help and you let him down.”

“You’re right, Anakin,” Qui-Gon conceded. “I haven’t been a very good friend to Obi-Wan, but that is something to be rectified between me and your Master. Once he regains consciousness, apologizing to him will be my first priority. I assure you…”

“He doesn’t need your assurances and neither do I.”

He was getting tired of the young man cutting him off with his spiteful words. Even though Anakin was apparently having some issues with him, there was no excuse for the lack of respect that he was demonstrating at the moment. “I don’t believe that Obi-Wan would want you speaking to another Jedi in such an insubordinate manner.”

Qui-Gon saw the teen’s cheeks turn a crimson red as he struggled with his warring emotions. The Jedi could see the Padawan tightly clench his jaw as he pressed on.

“You are not the only one who wants to help your Master, young one. You need to remember that.”

He had fully expected the young man to have come back with some type of sarcastic reply, but the teen managed to hold his tongue. Qui-Gon noticed that Anakin never let go of Obi-Wan’s hand. He certainly could not fault the boy for his loyalty to his Master.

“Master,” Anakin gently called out, “it’s time to wake up. Now you wouldn’t want to be accused of shirking your duties, would you? I think that was the second lecture that you ever gave to me. A Jedi never shies away from his responsibilities or something like that.”

Qui-Gon was content to sit back and watch the youth speak to Obi-Wan in such a hushed, but caring tone. The Jedi master felt a twinge of jealousy that he was not the one comforting Obi-Wan. He quickly dismissed that thought, knowing that he no longer had that right. He wasn’t sure Obi-Wan would want him here, but the Jedi found himself drawn to the Knight’s side.

As if he were reading Qui-Gon’s mind, the teen glanced up and said, “Master Jinn, there’s no need for you to stay. I’m here now.”

“I have nowhere else I need to be.”

“Suit yourself,” he shrugged.

The Jedi Master and the Apprentice sat in silence, their thoughts separate but the same. They were both concerned for the man laying in the bed and both Qui-Gon and Anakin wanted Obi-Wan to get well. They both also knew that most of Obi-Wan’s recovery was up to the Knight. As much as they wanted to see Obi-Wan sitting up in bed and grumbling about everyone making such a fuss, they knew that it could be a long while before that happened.

Qui-Gon looked around at the sound of the door opening. A smile spread across the weary face of the Jedi Master when he recognized the visitor. Rising from his seat, ignoring the perplexed stare of the young man sitting across from him, Qui-Gon greeted his old friend.

“Miranda, it’s good to see you.”

“I came as soon as I heard,” the soul healer said, looking past Qui-Gon towards Obi-Wan.

“The important thing is that you’re here. He’s been like this for close to three days now,” he informed Miranda.

The Jedi followed the healer as she made her way to Obi-Wan’s side. Qui-Gon saw that Anakin was already standing over his Master, protecting him as a parent would a child. He recognized the boy’s defensive posture and decided that he would go ahead and diffuse a potentially volatile situation. “Anakin Skywalker, this is Master Healer Miranda Ru’tan. Miranda, this is Anakin, Obi-Wan’s Padawan.”

“You’re a healer?” Anakin warily asked. “I thought Master Nathe was Obi-Wan’s primary healer.”

“He is,” Qui-Gon said. “Master Ru’tan is a soul healer. She has been helping Obi-Wan for many years.”

“A soul healer? What do you mean?”

“You’re Master has been under my care since he was a little older than you are right now,” she interjected.

“What did he need a soul healer for?” Anakin wanted to know.

“Anakin,” Qui-Gon began. “You’re Master has had a very difficult life. You spoke earlier of those expectations that were placed on him. There is a reason for those.”

Before Qui-Gon could utter another word, Obi-Wan began to stir in his bed. The Knight’s legs became entangled in the sheets as his struggles grew. The Jedi started to reach out and comfort the man, but Anakin had already taken that task upon himself.

“Master? It’s all right,” the boy promised. “I’m right here.”

Qui-Gon was worried that Obi-Wan was not calming down, the man’s heart rate was rapidly increasing as beads of sweat popped out on the Knight’s forehead. When Anakin glanced up at him, there was a look of confusion in the young man’s eyes.

“What’s wrong with him? Why isn’t he calming down?” Anakin demanded to know.

“Try and reach him through your bond,” Miranda suggested.

“All right,” Anakin nodded.

The Jedi moved a little closer as he intently watched the young man desperately try and help Obi-Wan. He fought against the urge to try and reach Obi-Wan as well, but he didn’t want to do anything to jeopardize the chance that Anakin could reach the Knight. He watched the teen grasp Obi-Wan’s trembling hand as he smoothed back his Master’s sweat-soaked hair.

//Master? Master, it’s me. It’s Anakin.//

//An…An’kin?//

//Master, it’s okay. You’re safe.//

//No…not…safe…//

//Yes, you are. You know I wouldn’t lie to you, Master.//

//No, you…wouldn’t…lie. Don’t ask…//

//Don’t ask what? Master? I don’t understand.//

//Don’t ask…my past.//

//What?//

//Don’t ask ‘bout my past. Not time…//

//What do you mean? I don’t understand, Obi-Wan. Please, wake up and we’ll talk.//

There was no answer. Qui-Gon walked around to the other side of the bed and placed his hand on Anakin’s shoulder. “Did you get through?”

“He didn’t make much sense. He still didn’t feel safe, but I’m not sure why. He told me not to ask about his past. I don’t understand.”

Qui-Gon leaned over Obi-Wan and lightly patted his arm. “All right, my friend. We will respect your wishes.”

He easily sensed Anakin’s growing confusion. “What are you talking about?” he demanded. “What wishes?”

“He doesn’t want us to tell you about his past. He wants to reserve that right for himself. So, we will respect his wishes.”

“He’s my Master and I have a right to know,” the teen argued.

“You will know when it is time. When he agreed to train you, it was with the understanding that no one would mention his past and that when he felt you were ready, he would tell you. There are certain things that would have been difficult to understand when you were younger and they will be difficult to accept now. But I will honor his request and allow him to tell you himself.”

“Thank you.”

Qui-Gon, Anakin, and Miranda all turned at the sound of the hoarse voice coming from the bed.

“Master, you’re awake!” Anakin exclaimed.

“Obi-Wan, how do you feel?” Qui-Gon asked.

The Jedi Master noted that it took a minute for Obi-Wan to focus on him. Qui-Gon started to move in closer but froze when his former Padawan abruptly turned away from him.

“Obi-Wan?” he tentatively called out.

“Anakin. Alone,” the Knight mumbled.

“You want to speak with Anakin alone?” Qui-Gon clarified.

A slight nod and the awkward silence from Obi-Wan tore at the Jedi Master’s heart. Of course, what did he expect? Was he truly expecting the man that he thought of as a son to welcome him with open arms after the harsh words that had been exchanged, especially over the past few months? Qui-Gon took a step back and stood beside Miranda. He allowed her to lead him out of Obi-Wan’s room and into the corridor.

“It will take time, but Obi-Wan will come around,” Miranda said encouragingly.

“I don’t know. I think this time the pain is too deep.”

“No, he has come through much worse,” she reminded the Jedi, “and he came through it with your help. He will need your help once again.”

“I don’t think he wants my help. He has Anakin now.”

“Yes, but Anakin isn’t you. You both have been through too much to throw your friendship away over something trivial.”

“It wasn’t trivial. I betrayed his trust and went behind his back. How can we move on past that?”

Qui-Gon slowly walked down to the end of the hallway and stared out the small window. He watched the busy early morning traffic whisk by as he found himself thinking of Obi-Wan. What were he and Anakin talking about? He was certain that Anakin had a lot of questions for Obi-Wan; he just hoped that his former apprentice was ready to answer them.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Master, I’m so glad you’re awake,” Anakin happily said. “I’ve been so worried.”
“Sorry,” Obi-Wan whispered as he held onto his Padawan’s hand.
Obi-Wan had not been ready to come out of the haven that he had created for himself, but the thought of someone else telling Anakin about his shaded past was too much to bear. He had vowed that when his Padawan was older that he would tell him everything including his difficult past with Master Elad.
When the Council had approached him about training Anakin, Obi-Wan had felt unworthy and unprepared to train the child that was heralded to be the Chosen One. He tried to deny them, but as Master Yoda had pointed out to him, he had no choice. The Council felt that Obi-Wan could relate to Anakin and that they would become one of the greatest Master/Padawan teams in Jedi history.
He had finally agreed to train Anakin with the condition that no one mention his past, his abilities, or anything that would make the boy uncomfortable. Anakin carried his own burden being dubbed the Chosen One, the one who would bring balance to the Force; he did not need his Master’s burdens as well.
Anakin’s concerned tone broke through his muddled thoughts. “Can I get you anything?”
“Some water,” Obi-Wan croaked.
He raised his trembling hand to take the glass. He felt the calloused hand of the young man over his, steadying the glass as he drank thirstily.
“Thank you,” the Jedi said, his voice a little stronger.
Obi-Wan studied his shaking hand for a moment. Turning it over, he noticed a faint mark on the palm.
“Master Nathe said it was a burn of some kind,” Anakin stated. “Do you remember what happened to it?”
“I…uh…not really. I remember lightening, that’s about all,” the Jedi confessed.
“I don’t know what happened either. By the time, Master Jinn and I found you, you were already unconscious.”
“Maybe it will come to me sooner or later.”
Obi-Wan sighed. He was so tired. He felt as if every muscle in his body had been shredded and then put back together. The Jedi didn’t even want to move, but he let Anakin help him sit up slightly, propping him up with a pillow.
“I’m sorry,” Obi-Wan apologized again.
“It’s not your fault.” Anakin nervously licked his lips. “Master, you didn’t want Qui-Gon to tell me about your past, why not?”
“It is my place to do that.”
“He said that you had a difficult life.”
“It wasn’t easy.”
“I’m ready to listen.”
“So, you are. I guess I better start at the beginning then.”
“Only if you’re up to it.”
Obi-Wan weakly smiled. “I’m still quite tired. I’ll do what I can.”
“No, Master. I want you to rest. I’m not going anywhere,” Anakin vowed.
The Jedi nodded gratefully as he closed his eyes to sleep. He was thankful for his Padawan’s understanding and he was proud of him for controlling his emotions. Obi-Wan could feel Anakin’s distress and coupled with his own raging feelings, it was quite a load to manage. He blindly reached out for Anakin’s hand once again and lightly squeezed it.
His eyes snapped open. Anakin was still there. That was good. Anakin would stay by his side and take care of him. He made a silent promise that the next time he woke up, he would tell the teen anything he wanted to know. As Obi-Wan closed his eyes once again, he prayed to the Force that Anakin would understand why he waited until now to tell him the truth.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The shrouded figure paced in his newly decorated private chambers. He held the highest political office in the Republic, but that power did not give him everything he wanted. What he truly wanted was lying in a bed in the healer’s wing of the Jedi Temple. When he had made inquiries, he had been told that Obi-Wan Kenobi was still unresponsive.

If only things had gone differently. If only that meddling child hadn’t interfered, he would have his prize and then he would be well on his way to achieving his dream of ruling the galaxy. He grabbed the back of his chair and bent over slightly, cradling his chest. It still ached from where Kenobi had...No! He couldn’t afford to dwell on that. He had to come up with another way to get his hands on the Jedi. Obi-Wan Kenobi would belong to him or the Jedi would live to regret the day that he had ever been born.

I can hardly wait to see where you take this.

I hope Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan can work out their differences. And Anakin is going to find out the truth...hope he takes it all in stride. The last thing Obi-Wan needs is a padawan who has doubts about his master.

Thanks for the PM!

My, how the mighty have fallen - oh, okay, that is not really the appropriate phrase. It's hard to see how such a close bond was so fractured, considering the relationship between Qui and Obi in the prequels to this.

I love how close Anakin is to Obi-Wan, though.

Can't wait for more - you could post every day and that wouldn't be often enough for me.

I think you did a spectacular job with the opening dialogue. It couldn't have been better. Now I want to know more about why Qui went behind Obi's back and what Obi is really going to do about it.

Great job. Loved it.

Wow, what a great start! grin

I'm sad, though, to see that Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon aren't very close anymore! cry I hope they can reconcile eventually! worried

At least Obi is close to Anakin, I hope they stay that way. So even with Obi's special Force-connection, Anakin is still the Chosen One, huh? thinking I just hope he isn't destined to do what he did in cannon! cry

And how did Obi-Wan end up in the healer's ward? He had a confrontation with Palps? thinking

Can't wait for more, I'm hooked already! grin And thanks for the PM! rose

Wow! This is a superb first post... which isn't surprising, given who the author is. wink

Once again, I'm really liking your version of Anakin. happy He and Obi-Wan seem to have a much better relationship than in canon. I will be interested to see how things happened to bring them together.

The damage to Obi and Qui's relationship, though... cry Hopefully they can find a way to reconcile. I am curious to find out what Qui-Gon did that could do such damage to the bond they shared. sad

And of course the Sith have to be involved. Trying to get their slimy hands on Obi... angry This is going to be interesting...

Looking forward to more!

I thought I had replied to this. But I tried so many times and always go interrupted.

I have a bad feeling about this. I think a certain Sith Lord has been trying to exact revenge on our Obi-Wan. Good thing Anakin and Qui-Gon are there.

Once again, I'm really liking your version of Anakin. He and Obi-Wan seem to have a much better relationship than in canon. I will be interested to see how things happened to bring them together.

The damage to Obi and Qui's relationship, though... Hopefully they can find a way to reconcile. I am curious to find out what Qui-Gon did that could do such damage to the bond they shared.

We'll have to see... wink Thank you so much for reading!

all_othr_nams_tkn: Don't worry, Siri will be around. wink I'd be more than happy to add you to the PM list. Thank you for asking!

ZaraValinor: I thought I had replied to this. But I tried so many times and always go interrupted.

No problem. I do that stuff all the time!

I have a bad feeling about this. I think a certain Sith Lord has been trying to exact revenge on our Obi-Wan. Good thing Anakin and Qui-Gon are there.

He's going to need both of them...that's for certain. Thank you so much for reading! hugs

Well, vacation is over! I'll be working on the next post this week, so hopefully, you won't have to wait too long. Thank you all for your patience! hugs

Part 2

Anakin sat by his Master’s side, watching Obi-Wan sleep. He was thankful that Obi-Wan had awakened from his coma and he didn’t begrudge the Jedi his well-deserved rest, but the teen wanted to talk to his Master and find out what Obi-Wan had wanted to tell him. He knew that his Master had led a very difficult life, but he didn’t know why. Anakin imagined that life couldn’t have been easy with Qui-Gon Jinn.

He was glad that the Council had appointed Obi-Wan to be his Master. There had been a rather heated discussion about who was going to train the Chosen One. Anakin hated that name. Maybe that was one reason that he was drawn to his Master. Obi-Wan never thought of him as the Chosen One; he just accepted Anakin for who he was.

Qui-Gon Jinn had wanted to be the one to train him, but the Council had denied his request. He remembered the day that his fate was decided. It had been the best day of his life when Obi-Wan had braided some of his own hair into Anakin’s to form his Padawan braid. He had been so proud that he had missed the brief interchange between Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon. Looking back, he wished that he had paid more attention to what had been said between the two men; maybe then he would have been able to help Obi-Wan more.

The door opened to reveal the imposing figure of Master Qui-Gon Jinn. Anakin quickly rose from his seat and met the Jedi Master. He motioned for the Jedi to step back out in the hallway.

“I was just checking to see if he was all right,” Qui-Gon said.

“He’s sleeping and I don’t want you to disturb him.” Anakin stood in front of the Jedi Master, arms crossed, daring Qui-Gon to argue with him.

“That wasn’t my intention, Padawan. I merely wanted to…”

“To what? Make his life more miserable?”

Qui-Gon’s eyes narrowed. “I suggest you watch your tone, Padawan. May I remind you that I’m a Jedi Master and you should address me accordingly?”

“Yes, Master Jinn. My apologies. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I must get back to my Master.” Without waiting for the Jedi to dismiss him, Anakin turned his back on the Master and started to palm open the door. He felt a firm hand on his shoulder. He glanced back over his shoulder, his eyes narrowing at the tall Jedi.

“I will not tolerate such disrespect and neither would your Master,” Qui-Gon warned.

Anakin was frustrated. His patience with Master Qui-Gon Jinn had just about reached its limits. The irritating thing was that the Jedi Master was right. Obi-Wan had always stressed the importance of respecting others whether they were Jedi or not. That was one reason that his Master was cherished by so many. Obi-Wan never considered himself better than others, even a boy who had been raised as a slave.

“Again, I apologize, Master Jinn,” Anakin coolly stated.

“Apology accepted. Now, that we have that out of the way,” Qui-Gon continued, “I would like to see Obi-Wan again before I retire for the evening.”

“I told you that he was sleeping, Master Jinn. Why do you have to see him now?”

“I just wanted to be sure that he’s really all right. In the past, I’ve spent many days and nights by his bedside when he was ill or hurt. I guess old habits are hard to break,” the Jedi mused.

“Did you ever think…” Anakin paused when he sensed Obi-Wan reaching out through their bond.

//Padawan?//

//Master, are you all right?//

//I will be when you two stop arguing.//

//Master, I’m sorry. How did you know?//

//Both of you have a rather formidable presence in the Force. It’s kind of hard not to notice.//

//I’m sorry we disturbed you. Master Jinn wants to see you.//

For a moment, Anakin was beginning to think that Obi-Wan had drifted back off to sleep. He gently called out to him.

//Master?//

//Very well. I’ll see him.//

//Master, I’ll send him away if you want me too.//

//No, it’s all right.//

Anakin glanced over at the Jedi Master and then palmed open the door. “He’s awake,” he informed Qui-Gon. “He said that he would see you.”

Qui-Gon nodded his thanks as Anakin palmed open the door. The teen followed the Jedi in the room, Anakin’s steely gaze watching Qui-Gon’s every move. Obi-Wan had been hurt enough by this man, yet it seemed that once again Qui-Gon Jinn was going to take advantage of his Master’s forgiving nature.

He followed the Jedi Master into Obi-Wan’s room. The two men simply stared at each other, neither seeming to know what to say. Feeling a need to protect his Master, Anakin moved to Obi-Wan’s side. He took Obi-Wan’s trembling hand in his own and lightly squeezed it.

“Padawan.”

Anakin winced at the frailty of his Master’s usual cultured tone. He leaned down closer to his Master so that he could hear him. “What is it, Master?”

“Water, please.”

The teen poured him a glass of water from the pitcher beside his bed and tenderly helped the Jedi sit up. Once again, he placed his hands over Obi-Wan’s to help steady the glass. His Master nodded his thanks and sat back against the pillow that Anakin had propped behind him.

“Thank you, Anakin,” Obi-Wan said, his voice slightly stronger. “Now I have one more thing to ask of you.”

“Anything, Master.” Anakin knew that after coming so close to losing his Master, he would do whatever he could do to help Obi-Wan in his recovery.

“Go to our quarters and bring me my sleep clothes. I refuse to be seen in these humiliating, wretched things that the healers insist that I wear.”

“Yes, Master. I’ll go as soon as…”

“Now, Padawan,” Obi-Wan gently urged.

Anakin looked over at Qui-Gon and then back to his Master. “Master, I’d rather wait.”

“I need to speak with Master Jinn. Don’t worry, I’ll be fine,” the Jedi assured the teen.

“Yes, Master,” Anakin finally consented. “I won’t be gone long.”

“I’m sure you won’t. I’ll be here,” Obi-Wan weakly smiled as the youth slowly made his way towards the door.

Anakin didn’t miss the opportunity to look over at Qui-Gon Jinn on his way out. He hoped the imposing Jedi Master understood the implications of his icy glare. In his cold stare, Anakin was informing the Jedi that he better not say anything to upset his Master or he would have to answer to him. Anakin paused just outside the door and spared one last fleeting look over his shoulder. He saw Qui-Gon moving to sit down beside Obi-Wan. The teen didn’t want to leave his Master alone with this man, but Obi-Wan had insisted.

“You’re not going to be alone with him for long,” Anakin muttered to himself.

The young man broke out into a jog and headed towards the lift. He was determined to gather his Master’s things and get back to his side as soon as possible. Obi-Wan was too weak to face Qui-Gon on his own, but Anakin knew that there was no talking him out of it. His Master’s stubbornness was one of the characteristics that Anakin had come up against very early in their relationship and he knew from experience that he usually could not change Obi-Wan’s mind once he was determined to do something.

Anakin stepped into the lift and pushed the button for the level he needed. As he silently willed the car to go faster, he lightly touched their bond and could easily sense his Master’s unease. He knew that he should not distract Obi-Wan, so Anakin settled for simply sending him waves of assurance. Anakin smiled as he felt his Master’s gratitude across their bond.

“You’re more than welcome, Master,” he whispered.

The door opened and he darted down the hall towards the quarters he shared with Obi-Wan. As he opened the door, Anakin wondered what was happening between his Master and Qui-Gon. He so desperately wanted to be there and the quicker he gathered Obi-Wan’s things, the faster he could get back.

He went in Obi-Wan’s bedroom and quickly opened his drawers to pull out his sleep clothes. He took a moment to stare at the holo picture of himself and Obi-Wan in one of their more casual moments. They were at Dex’s for Anakin’s birthday and Knight Tachi had taken the picture and given it to his Master. “Everything will be all right, Master. I promise you,” Anakin pledged. This was a vow that he would not break.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Obi-Wan cautiously eyed his former Master as he sat down in the chair next to his bed. He was still very tired and really wasn’t looking forward to talking to the Jedi Master, but all in all, Qui-Gon had left him with very little choice. The Jedi had been more than willing to engage in a battle of wills with his apprentice in order to see him, so Obi-Wan decided that he would just get this confrontation over with.
He was fully aware that Anakin had not wanted to leave his side and had even felt the boy reach out to him through their bond to make sure that he was all right. Obi-Wan was deeply touched by the demonstration of affection from his Padawan and returned the gesture. The Jedi then erected a temporary shield around his mind to spare Anakin the burden of his discomfort.
“Anakin won’t be gone that long,” Obi-Wan began, “so if you have something to say, you better make it quick.”
“Obi-Wan, I’ve been worried about you. I just wanted to make sure that you were all right.”
“Is that all?”
The young Jedi could tell that his abruptness had taken Qui-Gon by surprise. He knew that he was on the borderline of being insubordinate himself, but right now he did not have the energy to care.
“What do you mean is that all?” Qui-Gon asked. “Obi-Wan, when we found you, you were injured and unresponsive. Even after a day in bacta, Nathe informed us that you were in a coma-like state much like the time after you battled Xanatos. The healers didn’t know if or when you would wake up and I realized what a fool I had been.”
“It took me almost dying for you to realize that?” Obi-Wan incredulously replied.
“Yes,” Qui-Gon shamefully admitted.
Obi-Wan quietly chuckled to himself, shaking his head back and forth in amazement. “So, you were feeling guilty and now you’re here to confess your sins.”
“I guess that’s one way of looking at it.”
“And I’m supposed to say that I forgive you. That’s what you want, isn’t it?”
“I would be eternally grateful if you would find it in your heart to forgive a stubborn Jedi, blinded by his own pride.”
Obi-Wan ran his trembling hand through his hair. He knew that forgiveness was the Jedi way, and he knew that he should forgive Qui-Gon, but he wasn’t ready to do that. Too many hurtful words had been uttered and too many spiteful actions had been performed for Obi-Wan to forget. Until he could forget, he couldn’t forgive.
He studied Qui-Gon’s face. His former Master had seemed to age at least ten years in the past few months. Obi-Wan could see the hope in Qui-Gon’s eyes. How could he destroy that hope? How could he do that to the man who had believed in him when no one else did? Qui-Gon had literally rescued him from hell and all he was asking was for Obi-Wan’s forgiveness.
“I can’t,” Obi-Wan finally whispered. “I wish I could, but I can’t.”
“Obi-Wan, I…”
He raised his hand, cutting off the pleas of the elder Jedi. “I always considered you to be my savior. I wouldn’t be here today if it had not been for you. That’s why it’s so hard to tell you that I can’t forgive you. I’m not sure when things started changing between us, but it was soon after the Council appointed me as Anakin’s Master. I didn’t ask for them to do that and I wasn’t trying to take him away from you, I was honoring the mandate of the Council.
“Since then, little by little, you’ve been trying to take him away from me and I don’t understand why. You trained me. You taught me control. You helped me regain confidence not only in the Force, but in myself as well. Why didn’t you think that I could pass these teachings onto Anakin? Then to discover that you’ve been going to the Council behind my back and questioning my abilities as a Master was just like pouring salt in an open wound.
“So, after I almost died, you start feeling sorry and expect me to forgive you as if nothing has happened. You’ve not only hurt me, but you have hurt Anakin as well and that is something I can not tolerate. You used to be that protective of me and it was nice having someone love me that much. I believe at one time that you would have died for me just as I would for you. I’m not so sure now.”
Obi-Wan swallowed, his voice growing hoarse again. He forced himself to continue, knowing that he still had things to say to Qui-Gon. “There was a time that Anakin looked up to you and rightfully so. But now, he’s seen you do things that I never thought you would be capable of. He’s seen you betray the one you claimed to love as a son. I would think that you of all people would remember what it’s like to be betrayed by someone you cared for.”
The ailing Jedi laid his head back on his pillow and closed his eyes. He could feel the Force starting to surge through him. He clenched his hands as he slowed his breathing down. Obi-Wan heard the glass sitting on his nightstand shatter. He embraced the Force and allowed it to flow through him as a tingling sensation passed through his fatigued muscles. Once he felt as if he had control of the Force again, he opened his eyes.
“It’s been a while since you’ve had to do that,” Qui-Gon observed.
“Yes, it has. I guess I’ve let my emotions get the better of me,” Obi-Wan said. “At least it was just a glass.”
“I guess so.”
Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon sat in silence. This was the first time in a long while had he seen his former mentor rendered speechless. Under other circumstances, Obi-Wan may have felt sorry for him, but now, he couldn’t. He couldn’t let their past history together affect the judgments that he made today or in the future. His priority was Anakin and training him to be the best Jedi that he could be.
“Is there anything else, Master Jinn?” Obi-Wan inquired, shattering the silence between them.
“I guess I’ve earned everything that you’ve said. I don’t know what I was thinking, coming in here and expecting you to act like nothing has ever happened. I don’t know how I’ll ever undo the damage between us, but I do swear that if it takes my last breath to do so, then so be it. Things will be right between us one day, Obi-Wan. I promise.”
Obi-Wan watched as Qui-Gon rose from his chair, his shoulders slumped in defeat. “You should remember that I always keep my promises.”
“Except one,” Obi-Wan corrected.
“What was that?”
“That you would stand by me no matter what,” Obi-Wan reminded him. “I guess there are some things that even the great Qui-Gon Jinn can’t do.”
“I stood by you.”
“Yes, you did. Until it really mattered,” Obi-Wan retorted. “I’ve needed you for the past several years and you’ve been preoccupied with trying to take my Padawan away from me. That’s not standing by me. That’s standing against me.”
Obi-Wan watched as Qui-Gon walked out the door. He removed the shield that he had erected earlier and searched for the soothing presence of his Padawan.
//Master? Are you all right?//
//Yes. I’m fine. And you?//
//I’m on my way back to the healer’s wing. Is he gone?//
//Yes. He’s gone and I don’t think you’ll have to be worrying about acting as my personal body guard.//
//Are you sure you’re all right?//
//I’m fine. Just tired.//
//I’m getting off the lift now.//
Obi-Wan absently nodded and waited for Anakin to enter the room. As the door opened, he caught a glimpse of Qui-Gon talking with Miranda Ru’tan. He could have sworn that he saw the Jedi Master brush a tear away. Obi-Wan closed his eyes. He would not feel guilty about making the man cry. Qui-Gon had brought this pain on himself and Obi-Wan would not claim responsibility for it.
“Master?” Anakin took a hesitant step towards him.
The Jedi opened his eyes and smiled at his young Padawan. “Did you get everything I asked for?”
“Yes, Master. I even brought you the holo novel you were reading.” Anakin placed the data pad on the nightstand, taking note of the shattered glass. “What happened?”
“Just an accident.”
“Master, please tell me.”
Obi-Wan sighed. “Sit down, Anakin. I promised to tell you about my life. You may hear things that you had no idea about and you may hear some things that may shock you. You have a right to know and I believe that you are old enough to know the truth.”
He knew he had Anakin’s full attention as the young man sat down beside him and held his hand. Obi-Wan wished that he could stop the tremors, but they seemed to want to plague him. Where to start? Obi-Wan blew out another breath. The most logical place to start would be at the beginning.
Wow! Thanks for the pm! I was hoping you'd write a sequel to The Best of Intentions. I just never expected you to jump ahead in time so far, but it's still a great choice. I certainly hope Obi and Qui can mend their broken relationship. Post again soon!
