Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon sat in silence. This was the first time in a long while had he seen his former mentor rendered speechless. Under other circumstances, Obi-Wan may have felt sorry for him, but now, he couldn’t. He couldn’t let their past history together affect the judgments that he made today or in the future. His priority was Anakin and training him to be the best Jedi that he could be.

“Is there anything else, Master Jinn?” Obi-Wan inquired, shattering the silence between them.

“I guess I’ve earned everything that you’ve said. I don’t know what I was thinking, coming in here and expecting you to act like nothing has ever happened. I don’t know how I’ll ever undo the damage between us, but I do swear that if it takes my last breath to do so, then so be it. Things will be right between us one day, Obi-Wan. I promise.”

Obi-Wan watched as Qui-Gon rose from his chair, his shoulders slumped in defeat. “You should remember that I always keep my promises.”

“Except one,” Obi-Wan corrected.

“What was that?”

“That you would stand by me no matter what,” Obi-Wan reminded him. “I guess there are some things that even the great Qui-Gon Jinn can’t do.”

“I stood by you.”

“Yes, you did. Until it really mattered,” Obi-Wan retorted.

cry Whoa, you really twisted that relationship around and summed it up wonderfully in just a few lines as above.

What a woderful interweaving of personalities, of the past and the present. It's another to make us other authors weep in shame - or try to emulate you. The "angst" is pure human, not overwrought and delicately handled - it's very real.

To make a reader cry for the character(s) and/or situation without the clear intent to do so (pure mush or angst) is a true gift.

cry

Touching and powerful emotion. Your writing is exquisite.

Wow, Qui-Gon tried push Obi-Wan and Anakin apart and questioned Obi-Wan's capabilities as a master in front of the Council- no wonder Obi-Wan isn't ready to forgive him! frustrated
And yet, after all Qui did for Obi in "The Truth shall set you Free" and "The Best of Intentions" I do hope they can find reconciliation, however unlikely it now seems. sad

So now Obi-Wan is going to tell Anakin about his history... I wonder how he will react. thinking

Well done and looking forward to more! applause

So they have had a falling out over Anakin.
shame_on_you Shame Qui-Gon, I am sure it wasn't Obi-Wan who wanted to train Anakin but the council saw fit to do it.

They must realise that Obi-Wan should be the one.

Brilliant update. applause

Poor Obi-Wan! Seems like he got in a fight with old Palps - least I think it's old Palps - and got beat up pretty badly. Though he apparently got Palpatine pretty good too. grin

And I love how loyal and protective Anakin is of Obi-Wan. It's nice to see them working together and helping each other. And I'm glad Obi-Wan is gonna tell Anakin about his past, before it becomes something between them. happy

I do kinda feel bad for Qui-Gon though. Mostly 'cause he acted like such an idiot and is only now realizing this... sad

Could you add me to the PM list please? Thanks!

p_stotts: I was hoping you'd write a sequel to The Best of Intentions. I just never expected you to jump ahead in time so far, but it's still a great choice. I certainly hope Obi and Qui can mend their broken relationship.

It's going to take some doing to mend their relationship and a lot of help from some well meaning friends. Thanks for reading and I'm glad you're enjoying it. hugs

blush My friend, you are too kind. Thank you so much. hugs

wolf_kenobi: So now Obi-Wan is going to tell Anakin about his history... I wonder how he will react.

Not as well as you might think. Thank you for your kind words. I really appreciate you reading this story! hugs

Bastet: Thank you for your kind words. As for Anakin being very understanding, well... wink

Obi-Odd13: Thanks for your kind words. I'm so glad that you're enjoying it and I will more than happy to add your name to the list. Thank you for asking. hugs

The next post is up! Thank you all so much for reading and for your continued support. I hope you all have a happy and safe 4th!

Part 3

“I take it that things didn’t go well,” the soul healer observed.

Qui-Gon Jinn merely shook his head, not trusting his voice to speak. To say that things had not gone well would be an understatement. Obi-Wan had not minced words, telling the Jedi exactly how he felt. Qui-Gon knew that he deserved every vindictive word that his former Padawan had uttered. He should not have gone in that room expecting Obi-Wan to forgive him. Why should the young Jedi forgive him? He couldn’t forgive himself.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Anakin approaching them. He noticed that the Padawan seemed intent on ignoring the Masters. Qui-Gon wiped a stray tear as the youth entered Obi-Wan’s room. The Jedi fought the urge to look over his shoulder at the man lying in the bed.

He felt Miranda’s gentle touch on his arm. “It’s going to take time,” she tried to assure him.

“I don’t think that time can heal what has happened between us,” Qui-Gon sadly replied. “I’m not sure that anything will help at this point. Too many words have been exchanged that can not be taken back. Things will never be the same between us.”

“I refuse to believe that.”

The Jedi smiled at the healer. “Miranda, you’re still the eternal optimist.”

“Somebody has to be,” she teased. “After all these years of dealing with you two, I’ve still managed to retain my positive outlook.”

“It is rather amazing, isn’t it?”

“I’ll say.”

Qui-Gon allowed the healer to guide him toward the lift. “Let’s go and get something to eat and then we can talk,” Miranda suggested.

“I’m not hungry.”

“Of course you are.”

“No, I…”

“Humor me, please.”

The Jedi knew that there was no use in arguing with the healer. He had yet to win an argument in all the years that they had known each other. “All right,” he finally consented. “I don’t guess I have anywhere else I need to be.”

“Let’s go then. Shall we brave the cafeteria or do you want something more delectable?”

“The cafeteria will be fine.”

Qui-Gon reached out to push the button to summon the lift car. He didn’t think that the day could get any worse. The Jedi was proven wrong when the doors opened revealing Knight Siri Tachi.

Siri had always been devoted to Obi-Wan, her loyalty unwavering. Qui-Gon had been on the receiving end of her temper several times regarding Obi-Wan’s welfare. He now regretted not heeding her warnings. She had tried to tell him that he was losing Obi-Wan, but he didn’t listen.

“Master Jinn, Master Ru’tan,” the Knight coolly greeted the pair, bowing respectfully to the two Masters.

“Knight Tachi, it’s been a while since our paths have crossed,” Qui-Gon answered.

“Yes it has.” She brushed past Qui-Gon. “If you’ll excuse me, Master Jinn, I’m here to see Obi-Wan.”

“He’s awake now.”

“I am aware of that. Now, please excuse me.”

“Knight Tachi. I…”

“I really need to see Obi-Wan, Master Jinn. I believe that the time for friendly chit chat is past,” Siri firmly stated.

“Anakin is with him right now.”

“I won’t be long. Like I said, I just want to be sure that he’s all right.”

Qui-Gon nodded his understanding. He knew that Obi-Wan would want to see her. Siri had always been there for his apprentice and he had to admit that she had been there for him when he had not. Qui-Gon tamped the twinge of jealously that he felt. He could not fault her for caring for his Padawan, his ex-Padawan. “I can assure you that Obi-Wan is feeling well enough to put me in my place,” he said, his cheeks flushing slightly.

“I’m sure that it was well deserved,” she retorted.

“I can’t argue against that. I deserved every word.”

He easily sensed that the Knight was holding her tongue, quelling her own desire to shower him with a few words of her own. Qui-Gon had always appreciated Siri’s directness, even when it was aimed at him. But now, he wasn’t so sure that he wanted to hear what she had to say.

“Permission to speak freely, Master Jinn,” Siri boldly requested.

The Jedi steeled himself, preparing for the verbal assault that was about to assail him. There was no doubt in his mind that he deserved every harsh word she would speak. He glanced over at Miranda, whose hand still remained planted on his arm. At least he had one friend. Qui-Gon turned his attention back to Siri. “Proceed, Knight Tachi.”

“After Obi-Wan became your Padawan, I remember being so happy for him. I thought that maybe he was finally getting a break. We even laid our personal feelings for each other aside so he could pursue his dream of becoming a Jedi. You were aware that the Force had given him special abilities and were willing to help him when he needed it.

“During the time that he was gone from the Temple, he learned from you and grew into someone that you could be proud of. For the first time in his life, Obi-Wan had reason to be proud of his accomplishments and you were the one who instilled that sense of pride in him. He finally believed in himself and he wasn’t afraid of what the Force required of him.

“Then he killed that Sith on Naboo and everything changed for him. Everybody began demanding a piece of him and no one has been willing to give him anything in return. So many demands have been placed upon him by the Council, the Senate, and you, that some days, it’s all he could do to put one foot in front of the other.

“He has needed you and you have done nothing but try to undermine him at every turn. If you recall, it was the Council who deemed Obi-Wan to be the one to train Anakin. So, why are you upset with Obi-Wan? If anything, you should be mad at the Council. Obi-Wan has done a good job with Anakin and you can’t deny that, but it would have been nice for him to have someone to share his burdens with. That someone should have been you, but it wasn’t.

“And now, that he has encountered another Sith, what’s going to be required of him now? How many Sith does he have to face in order to prove himself to you and everybody else? He can’t keep going like he has been. You’ve made sure that Council has been aware of everything else he’s done; why don’t you go and tell the Council that?”

Qui-Gon could no longer look Siri in the eye. She had spoken the truth and he could not deny that. He had to find someway to make amends with Obi-Wan, but he truly had no idea where to begin. Surrounding himself with the Force, he met the Knight’s gaze. “Everything you have said is true. I just don’t know where to begin to try and rectify what I’ve done.”

“I think the first thing that you have to accept is the possibility that you may not be able to. Know your limitations. Isn’t that what you used to tell Obi-Wan?”

“Yes, I told him that quite often, especially when he was getting frustrated with his training. I guess it’s time to learn from the past.”

He watched as Siri turned to leave. She had given him much to think about.

Qui-Gon saw her stop just outside of Obi-Wan’s door and look back over her shoulder. “Master Jinn, I believe that you can reclaim what you’ve lost with Obi-Wan, but you will have to meet him half way. I’m not sure if you’re ready to do that. Now, if you’ll excuse me.”

The Jedi Master sighed. “She’s right,” he muttered. “Everything she said is true.”

“Come on, Qui-Gon,” Miranda insisted. “Let’s go.”

“I’m afraid that I’m not going to be good company this evening. Perhaps we can do this some other time.”

He was grateful that the soul healer did not press him to follow through with their previous plans. Qui-Gon wanted to be alone. He needed to think and to meditate. He wanted to seek the guidance of the Force and this time, he would do something that he had not done in a long time. The Jedi would listen to what the Force had to say.

“Call me if you need me,” the healer made him promise.

“I will and thank you.”

He entered the lift and after the doors closed, he slumped against the wall. Siri’s words were echoing in his mind. He can’t keep going like he has been. She was right. Things had to change and the change had to start with him.

“I promise you, Obi-Wan, that I will do everything in my power to make things right between us again. I will help you, not hinder you and I will be your friend, not your foe.”

Qui-Gon felt the Force began to swirl around him, embracing every fiber of his being. It was as if two old friends were reclaiming a friendship that had long been forgotten. He had not felt this close to the Force in a long time and it was refreshing. For the first time, Qui-Gon felt as if the Force had heard his solemn vow and was literally blessing his future endeavors. He had convinced the Force of his sincerity, now all he had to do was to convince Obi-Wan.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Obi-Wan took another sip of water and sat back against the pillows that were propping him up. Anakin had fetched him a new glass after the other one had shattered. Of course, if it hadn’t been for Anakin, he would have been wearing his water instead of drinking it. The constant tremor in his hand was becoming annoying. He would have to speak to Master Healer Nathe about it, but right now, he had to talk to Anakin.
The Jedi had known this day would come and he had constantly thought about what he would say, going even so far as to rehearse his dialogue in the mirror when his apprentice had been in classes at the Temple. But now, he wasn’t sure if he could even remember how to form the words he needed to say.
“Master, you’re not strong enough for this,” Anakin said, worry clouding his youthful features.
“I can at least start telling you the saga that is my life,” Obi-Wan tiredly quipped.
“You need to rest. We’ll have plenty of time; I’m not going anywhere,” the teen promised.
“I know. You’ve always been there by my side, my Padawan.”
“For as long as you’ll have me.”
Obi-Wan reached up and playfully tugged Anakin’s braid. “I guess I’ll keep you around a while longer. I mean after all, who else would run interference with the Council after one of those infernal bots that you insist on tinkering with, wreaks havoc in the Temple?”
Anakin slyly grinned. “Only you, Master.”
The Jedi weakly returned Anakin’s smile. He cherished these special moments between him and his Padawan. With the demands being placed upon him and Anakin lately, they had very little time for the good natured teasing that they enjoyed so much.
He gently massaged his temple, using the few moments of companionable silence to collect his thoughts.
“Master?” Anakin gently called to him. “Are you all right?”
“I’m fine. I’m just trying to decide where to begin.”
“Wherever you want to.”
Obi-Wan blew out a cleansing breath. “My life has not been that of an average Jedi. In fact, it almost seems at times that I’ve led two very distinct lives.”
“I don’t understand, Master,” Anakin quietly replied.
“Sometimes I don’t either. I also don’t understand why this is so hard.” Obi-Wan welcomed the comfort and encouragement that Anakin was sending him through their bond. “Thank you, my Padawan.”
“You’re welcome.”
Obi-Wan forced himself to press on. “I was not always Master Jinn’s Padawan. My first Master was Master Elad.”
“Master Elad? I’ve never heard of him.”
“You probably wouldn’t. He’s been dead for quite a while.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be.”
“So, after Master Elad died, you became Master Jinn’s apprentice?”
Obi-Wan nodded. “It was a few months after Elad’s death before that happened. I wasn’t very trusting of him or any Jedi at that time.”
“I guess it would be hard to forge a new bond with a different Master,” Anakin noted. “If you don’t mind me asking, how did Master Elad die?”
There it was. The question he had been dreading. Everything else depended on Anakin’s reaction to Obi-Wan’s answer. He had to have faith in his Padawan. He had to believe that Anakin would stay by his side no matter what.
“I…uh...he was murdered,” Obi-Wan stammered.
“That’s horrible. Did they catch who did it?”
“Yes, actually the killer confessed.”
“Who was it?”
The Jedi paused slightly. “It was me. I killed Master Elad.”
“What?”
Obi-Wan wanted to close his eyes so he didn’t have to see the look of astonishment and disbelief on the teen’s face. But he called up on that inner strength that he had learned to rely on and met Anakin’s perplexed gaze.
“I killed Master Elad,” Obi-Wan repeated.
“I’m sure it was an accident,” Anakin reasoned.
“No. It was not an accident. I purposefully killed him. At the time, I felt it was my only means of escape.”
“Escape from what?”
“From the hell that I was living in.”
Obi-Wan never got to hear Anakin’s response to his unexpected revelation. The door opened allowing Siri Tachi to enter the room. He wasn’t sure if he should be thankful for the interruption or not. It definitely would give Anakin time to process what he had just learned, but at the same time, Obi-Wan wanted to just keep talking, telling his Padawan everything.
Siri stopped in mid-stride. “What’s wrong?”
“It’s good to see you, too,” Obi-Wan said.
“Don’t play games with me, Kenobi,” she warned.
Obi-Wan looked over at Anakin, sensing the boy’s turmoil. He reached out through the bond, and hoped that the teen wouldn’t rebuff his attempt at quelling his doubts. The Jedi quickly realized that Anakin was now blocking him and Obi-Wan really couldn’t blame him. Frowning, he turned his attention back to Siri. “I was just beginning to tell Anakin about my sordid past.”
“And I just wandered in here and interrupted, didn't I? I’m so sorry.”
“It’s quite all right,” Obi-Wan assured her.
“Yes, Knight Tachi,” the teen added, his voice bitter, unforgiving. “It’s fine, really.”
“Anakin, just because you’re angry at me doesn’t mean that you can be disrespectful to Knight Tachi,” the Jedi Master gently admonished.
“Forgive me, Master. I’m just a little overwhelmed to discover that my Master is a murderer.”
“Anakin!” Siri exclaimed.
Obi-Wan raised his trembling hand to silence Siri’s protests. “It’s all right, Siri. Anakin and I still have a lot to talk about.”
“I’ll get out of your way,” Siri said. “I just wanted to make sure that you’re all right.”
“I’m fine now.”
“You better be.”
He reached out for Siri's hand. “I do have a favor to ask before you go.”
“What is it?”
“I want you to give Anakin the journal.”
Siri nodded reluctantly. “Are you sure it’s time?”
“It’s probably past time.”
“All right,” she consented. “I’ll go and get it and bring it back here.”
“Thank you.”
Obi-Wan watched Siri as she left him alone with Anakin. He wished that he had been able to take her in his arms and draw from her strength. She had always been his rock, the one that he could always rely on, no matter what. He turned his attention back to Anakin, who was still glaring at him, his disbelief and anger radiating through their bond. At least the teen wasn’t blocking him any longer.
“What’s this journal that you’re talking about?” Anakin inquired.
“I kept it while I was Master Elad’s Padawan,” Obi-Wan explained. “I thought that maybe if you read it, then perhaps you would have a better understanding of why I killed him.”
“You said that you killed him to escape the hell that your life had become. What did you mean by that?”
“It’s in the journal.”
“I’d rather hear it from you.”
Obi-Wan began telling Anakin of his life with Elad. He knew that the teen wanted to hear it from him and he owed it to his Padawan to tell him what he wanted to know. Obi-Wan patiently answered Anakin's questions, even when he wasn't sure that the boy was ready to hear the answers.
The Jedi began to grow tired and he fought the urge to close his eyes. He had a feeling that because he had unlocked the box of memories that he had buried long ago, that his dreams would not be pleasant. It was Anakin who finally persuaded him to rest.
“We’ll continue this later, Master.”
“But I want you to understand…”
“Master, I’m not going anywhere. I’ll be here when you wake up.”
Obi-Wan didn’t miss the edge that was still present in his Padawan’s voice. Anakin had not completely released his anger, but right now, the Jedi did not have the strength to help him. As sleep claimed the Jedi, he managed to thank the Force that his Padawan was still by his side and right now, that was all that mattered.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The hooded figure sat down at his desk and stared across the vastness of his chambers, his thoughts consumed by a certain Jedi Master. He had not heard any news of how Obi-Wan Kenobi was faring and his curiosity was beginning to wear on him. He needed to know if his prize had been damaged. The dark robed man did not particularly want to have to search for a new apprentice. He wanted Kenobi. No one else would do.

Reaching out to his comm unit, he buzzed his personal assistant. “Contact the Jedi Temple and inform them that I am on my way. I want to personally check on the well being of Master Kenobi. Tell them that I will be there within an hour.”

Without waiting for a response, he switched the communication unit off. He removed his hood and peered out the window towards the Temple. He could see the sunlight reflecting off the tall spheres, enhancing the majestic beauty of the sacred place of the Jedi. “Surely you will not deny me access,” he mumbled to himself. “After all, I am the Chancellor.”

First reply! I understand Anakin's mixed feelings- that was played very well but at least he is processing the information.

Ahh, just hit me in the head. I didn't post last time. shame_on_you

This is so heartwrenching to me. I can understand where Anakin is coming from, but at the same time, he needs to draw from what he knows of his Master. Thank goodness Siri is there just accept Obi-Wan as he is.

I apologize for not replying to the last chapter. Somehow, I thought I had. confused

Chapter 2

I like your version of Anakin. He's a good kid and only wants what is best for Obi-Wan.

Poor Qui-Gon. He's trying to make amends but it seems his heart and motives aren't quite in the right place at the moment. It shouldn't have taken Obi-Wan almost dying for him to see his former padawan's worth, as his heart's child or otherwise. sad

I think Obi-Wan did the right thing. If he forgives Qui-Gon now, that wouldn't teach the Jedi the lesson he needs to learn at this point. I hope they can find a way to work it out. praying

Chapter 3

I think Anakin will see things differently when he reads his master's journal. Although Obi-Wan has told him in his own words, the journal may hold things that perhaps he left out, not on purpose but without realizing it. It may also give more emotion to the events that perhaps Obi-Wan has overcome or come to terms with by now.

I don't like the Chancellor. That could be Qui-Gon's first act of making things right: refuse the Chancellor access to his former padawan, thereby protecting Obi-Wan. happy I hope the Council doesn't give in to the Chancellor's request. worried

I'm glad Qui is resolving to help Obi-Wan. Lets just hope he's not too late to make things right... worried

Well, Anakin took that harder than I thought he would.... hopefully the journal will help him to understand.

And now we have Palps in the picture. frustrated I hope they don't let him see Obi-Wan....

Things are hotting up now. raised_brow

Some one should get suspicious if Palpy wants to see Obi-Wan. thinking

After all it is none of his business what happens in the Jedi temple.
If they wanted the chancellor to know they would have told him already.

Go away Palpy shame_on_you

Thank the force Siri is still there for Obi-Wan.
Come on Qui-Gon get yourself together, look out for Obi-Wan. idea

Brilliant applause

I think you did an excellent job with Anakin's feelings and how he's very confused about what is going on. He needs to read the journal to understand just how terrible Obi-Wan's life had been. I also hope he understands just how much Qui-Gon helped Obi over the years and it can make up a little of what their disagreements have caused lately.

Great job. Loved it.
