I'm glad to see that Siri and Obi-Wan remained close, too bad the same can't be said for Qui and Obi. cry And now I'm worried about Anakin and Obi! worried I hope the journal will help Anakin be a little more understanding.

I hope Palpatine crashes and burns on the way to the Temple, but that would be too easy. frustrated

I'm really enjoying this story, jedidas! grin

I hope Anakin sticks to his promise of not leaving Obi-Wan alone. Does he have a friendship with Palpatine in your version? Thanks for the p.m. I can't wait to read more, especially about Anakin reading the journal.

Valairy_Scot: I understand Anakin's mixed feelings- that was played very well but at least he is processing the information.

Yes, he is processing and soon he will have even more to think about once he receives the journal. Thank you my dear friend, for all your support. hugs

ZaraValinor: No problem, I forget things all the time! wink Don't worry, Anakin will come around! wink

bek: I think Obi-Wan did the right thing. If he forgives Qui-Gon now, that wouldn't teach the Jedi the lesson he needs to learn at this point. I hope they can find a way to work it out.

Time will tell... worried

I think Anakin will see things differently when he reads his master's journal. Although Obi-Wan has told him in his own words, the journal may hold things that perhaps he left out, not on purpose but without realizing it. It may also give more emotion to the events that perhaps Obi-Wan has overcome or come to terms with by now.

Anakin will have an even greater respect for his Master by the time he reads this journal.

Thanks so much for reading and good luck on your well deserved nominations! hugs

JediKaren: Yes, you will get some more snippets from the journal. Thanks so much for reading.!

wolf_kenobi: Well, Anakin took that harder than I thought he would.... hopefully the journal will help him to understand.

And now we have Palps in the picture. I hope they don't let him see Obi-Wan....

We'll see... wink

Darth_Drachonus: I'd be happy to add you to the list. Thanks so much for asking! hugs

Gkilkenny: Thanks so much. Don't worry too much...Obi took care of Palpy once. wink

dianethx: Thank you so much, Master. blush I appreciate your suggestion...it worked so well. I don't know what I'd do without you!

charie: Thank you so much. I'm glad you're enjoying it.

Bastet: I hope Palpatine crashes and burns on the way to the Temple, but that would be too easy.

laugh Yes it would...you know I never do things the easy way!

p_stotts: Anakin's friendship with Palpatine isn't as strong as it is in canon stories. Really the only use that Palps has for Ani is that it allows him to get closer to getting his hands on Obi-Wan. Thank you so much for reading. dancing

Thank you all so much for reading. I apologize for the fact that I haven't posted an update yet. I've been trying to get my excerpts ready for submission. Thank you for your patience and I promise you a post this week!

Part 4

Anakin sat motionless, staring at his Master’s sleeping form, attempting to digest what Obi-Wan had just told him. It was hard for him to believe that his Master had killed another Jedi. He had been on missions with Obi-Wan when the Jedi had been forced to take another life and his Master had always been troubled for several days after. Now, Anakin understood why.

What had happened to Obi-Wan to drive him to murder? His Master was a patient, gentle man whose quick wit and dry sense of humor often caught many off guard. Those who were close to Obi-Wan knew him to be compassionate, yet fiercely loyal, not only to his friends, but to the Jedi Order. Then there were those who seemed to go out of their way to avoid his Master. Anakin had never given this observation much consideration, until now. Could Obi-Wan’s past be the reason that many of the other Jedi in the Temple snubbed his Master?

He could remember going to the dining hall with Obi-Wan and sitting down at a table to eat, only to have the other Jedi’s quickly rise from their seats and leave, even though their meal was only half eaten. Obi-Wan would quickly disguise the hurt look on his face and resume talking to Anakin as if he had never noticed the Jedi’s actions. The teen assumed that Obi-Wan had just finally quit paying attention to the fact that his presence seemed to be able to clear a room; but had he really? Did these other Jedi know about Obi-Wan’s past? It was all beginning to make sense. Everything except for the fact that he didn’t know why his Master had killed this Master Elad.

Anakin glanced up as the door opened revealing Knight Tachi. He had often wondered about Obi-Wan’s relationship with the blond Jedi. The youth had a feeling at one time the two Jedi had been more than friends and he had even started to ask Obi-Wan on more than one occasion if his instincts were right. But something else always prevented him from doing so; he supposed that the Force didn’t want him prying into his Master’s personal business.

He silently bowed his head. “Knight Tachi,” Anakin softly greeted her.

“I don’t think we need to be so formal, Anakin.” Siri smiled as she quietly stood opposite of him, gazing down at his Master.

The teen shrugged. “I guess not.” Nodding towards his Master, Anakin said, “He’s been asleep for just a few minutes.”

“I won’t disturb him. He needs his rest.”

“Yeah,” Anakin half-heartedly agreed. He didn’t begrudge his Master the rest that he deserved, but at the same time, he wanted to know more about the reasons that drove Obi-Wan to kill.

Siri motioned for him to follow her outside into the waiting area. He sullenly pushed himself up out of the chair and followed the Knight. Anakin fell into the nearest chair, his weariness evident in his listless movements.

“Anakin?” Siri gently called to him. “Are you all right?”

“I don’t know,” he finally admitted, wiping his hand over his face in an attempt to hide the lines of fatigue that outlined his features. “I’m still finding it hard to believe that Obi-Wan could kill another Jedi, especially his own Master.”

Siri sat down beside him, her gaze non-judgmental, her smile tender and compassionate as she fingered the tattered edges of the journal that she held in her hands.

“Is that it?” the teen asked. “Is that the journal that he was talking about?”

“Yes,” she whispered. “He gave it to me several years ago, for safe keeping.”

“For safe keeping?”

“I guess he was worried that it would fall into the wrong hands,” Siri reasoned.

“The wrong hands?” Anakin was confused. “In the Jedi Temple?”

“He had to leave the Temple for awhile,” she explained. “I found it in my room after he left with a note from Obi-Wan asking me to keep it for him until he returned. There were very few people that your Master could trust back then. I tried to give it back to him later when he got back, but he told me that he knew where it was if he ever needed it.”

“Did you ever read it?”

“I started to a couple of different times, but I never made it past the first few pages.”

“Why?”

Siri clutched the journal to her chest. “I remember Obi-Wan when he was Elad’s apprentice and I remember the changes that he went through. Elad was not kind to Obi-Wan and subjected him to many horrors. He was trapped with nowhere to go and no one to turn to, so your Master kept this journal. I think at the time this old book was his only friend.”

“Where were you and the others? I mean Obi-Wan says that you, Bant, Garen, and Reeft have been friends since your days in the crèche. Didn’t you all see what was going on?”

“Obi-Wan began to pull away from us. For a while, he would barely even speak to us and if we asked him what was wrong, he would just tell us we were better off not knowing. I really didn’t want to know, but somehow I knew that whatever was going on was something bad.”

Anakin bristled. “Why didn’t you help him? You were his friends.”

“I know,” she shamefully admitted. “I’m not offering excuses, but in the end, we were there when it really mattered.”

“After he killed Elad?”

“Yes. He had a horrible time both physically and emotionally those first couple of years after it happened. If it hadn’t been for Master Jinn, I’m not sure that Obi-Wan would have survived.”

“If it wasn’t for Master Jinn, Obi-Wan wouldn’t be lying in this bed,” Anakin shot back.

“I know, but he was there back when your Master needed someone. He needed someone to guide him and to teach him control. They were good for each other. They helped each other heal.”

“Well, it seems to me that Master Jinn has done nothing but cause Obi-Wan pain.”

Anakin fought the urge to wilt under Siri’s icy glare. “Anakin, are you angry at Qui-Gon or Obi-Wan? Perhaps it’s just the universe in general that you’re peeved at,” she surmised.

“I don’t know,” the youth admitted. “I guess I’m just feeling a little overwhelmed. I’m finding it hard to believe that my Master actually killed another Jedi. Maybe I’m just trying to figure out why he kept this hidden from me all these years.”

“Anakin, how would you have felt as a ten year old discovering that Obi-Wan had killed a Jedi?”

He shrugged as he sighed deeply. How would he have reacted? He was in such awe of the Temple and of the Jedi. At that age, he would have found it hard to believe that something like this could happen within the walls of the Temple. In the past few years, he had learned and come to accept that the Jedi were not perfect. His perceptions and ideals had changed and thanks to Obi-Wan’s teachings, he had started to mature, growing not only physically, but mentally and emotionally.

“I don’t know how I would have reacted. I probably would have been scared.”

“Exactly and Obi-Wan knew that. You had just left your mother and you were still feeling that pain. He didn’t want to add to your burden. I know without a doubt that Obi-Wan intended to tell you everything before your sixteenth birthday, but it seems that fate beat him to it. He doesn’t need your judgment, he needs your understanding.”

“I know, but…”

“But you’re still unsure of him. He knows that and he accepts that.” Siri handed Anakin the journal. “Here. Take it and read it. It will give you a tremendous insight into your Master’s life. He has overcome a lot of obstacles in the past few years and I think that once you read it, you’ll understand that fact.”

Anakin took the journal from her and casually thumbed through it. There was no mistaking his Master’s distinctive script on the pages, some of the entries were short and some were longer. He held it tightly and nodded his head. “Thank you,” he whispered.

“You’re welcome,” Siri replied. “Why don’t you go back to your quarters and do some reading? Perhaps you can even grab a bite to eat. We don’t need you wearing yourself down, that’s the last thing Obi-Wan would want.”

He glanced over at the door, knowing that Obi-Wan was still blissfully unaware of their conversation. “I can’t leave him. I…”

“I’ll stay with him,” she volunteered. “He’s sleeping now anyway. When he wakes up, you’ll know.”

“I guess he would be all right,” he reluctantly consented. “Call me if he needs me.”

“Like I said, Anakin, if your Master needs you, then you’ll be the first to know.”

Anakin knew that she was referring to the special bond that he and Obi-Wan shared. This bond was unique from the usual Master/Padawan bond in that it often seemed that their thoughts were intertwined. Pushing himself up from his chair, he took one last look at the slumbering Jedi.

“I’ll be back,” he pledged.

Almost as an afterthought, Anakin turned back and said, “Whatever you do, I wouldn’t let Master Jinn in to see him.”

“Don’t worry, no one will disturb him. I promise.”

Satisfied that Siri would take care of his Master, Anakin began to make his way back to their quarters. His curiosity was getting the best of him. He wanted to know what was in the journal, but after listening to Siri, he wondered if he was ready to learn the truth. Anakin knew that he really didn’t have a choice. He had to discover what happened and the only way to even get a glimpse of his Master’s life was to read the journal.

He clutched the journal even tighter as he rounded the corner. The teen was so distracted that he nearly plowed into another Jedi. “I’m sorry, Master…”

Anakin’s apology was cut short upon his recognition of the Jedi Master. Sometimes, he would tell Obi-Wan that the Force hated him and right now, the teen knew it was one of those times. Standing before him, smoothing his disheveled robes was none other that Qui-Gon Jinn. Somewhere, the Force was laughing at him. Master Jinn was the last person that he wanted to see or talk to. There was no getting around the formidable Jedi, so Anakin silently braced himself to be addressed by the mighty Qui-Gon Jinn.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chancellor Palpatine was waiting at the entrance of the Temple, requesting to speak to either Master Yoda or Master Windu. He had not been granted access inside the Temple despite notifying them that he was coming. Few outsiders ever had the privilege of entering the sacred Jedi shrine, but one day, Palpatine would change that policy.
After what seemed like hours, he was finally greeted by Master Windu. Palpatine was cautious around the Korun Master. This particular Jedi was considered to be one of the greatest Jedi, after Yoda. Mace Windu was not someone to be toyed with. Plastering on his politician’s smile, the Chancellor politely greeted the Jedi Master.
“Master Windu. Did you not get my message?” he innocently inquired.
“Yes, we did, but you know that we allow very few non-Jedi in the Temple.”
“I’m aware of that,” Palpatine stated. “However, I have been a long standing friend of the Jedi. I was assuming that you would make an exception.”
“I’m aware of your relationship with the Jedi, Chancellor. We mean no disrespect, but…”
“None taken,” he assured Windu, abruptly cutting him off. “I was just coming to check on Master Kenobi. I’ve been worried about him. After all, I owe him a great debt.”
“He is resting,” Mace answered. “I will relay your concern to him.”
“May I see him?”
“No, that would not be wise at this time, Chancellor. He is still very weak from his encounter with the Sith.”
“So, the Sith are still out there. Their flame wasn’t extinguished on Naboo.”
“No it wasn’t.”
“Do you think Master Kenobi will be up to searching out this Sith once he is released from the healers?” the Chancellor pressed.
“That is not for me to say. I’m not a healer,” came the cool reply.
Palpatine quickly realized that he wasn’t going to get past the determined Jedi Master. He would have to find another way to see Kenobi. “Well, please give Master Obi-Wan my regards.”
“Of course, Chancellor.”
He slowly turned and made his way to his private transport. He could feel the dark eyes of Mace Windu upon him. “Another time, my dear Master Kenobi,” he muttered to himself.
Motioning for his personal pilot to take off, the Chancellor began to devise another scheme. “If I can’t get in through the front door, I guess I’ll have to use the back door. Although, that way hasn’t been used for quite a while.”
A feral grin danced across the Chancellor’s face. He had retained his power by easily giving up when he was presented with a challenge, knowing that an alternative solution would eventually present itself. Yes, he would find a way to get to Obi-Wan Kenobi and the Jedi would either join him or he would die.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“Padawan Skywalker,” Qui-Gon said. “I’m surprised to see you away from Obi-Wan’s side.”

“Knight Tachi is sitting with him,” Anakin informed the Jedi Master.

Qui-Gon nodded, a hint of a smile on his lips. He should have known that Siri Tachi would have found a way to be with Obi-Wan Kenobi. Even though attachment was forbidden, his former apprentice and the young girl always seemed to find a way around that rule. The Jedi Master took note of the familiar book that the Padawan held tightly in his hand.

“Is that what I think it is?” Qui-Gon asked.

“It’s my Master’s journal.”

“I remember it well. So, does he know that you have it?”

Anakin’s eyes narrowed at the Jedi. “Unlike you, I do not do things behind my Master’s back. He instructed Knight Tachi to give it to me. Not that it is any of your business, Master Jinn.”

“I don’t guess it is,” the Jedi agreed. “However, I hope that you are prepared to discover some hard truths.”

“I can handle it.”

“I’m not so sure that you can,” Qui-Gon retorted.

“Well, that’s not up to you, is it?” the teen snapped.

“I never finished it,” the Jedi began. “I gave it back to Obi-Wan.”

“You’ve read some of it?” the young man questioned.

Qui-Gon nodded, recalling the shocking passages that the journal contained. The despicable things that were done to Obi-Wan became too painful to read. Why would his former Padawan want Anakin to read this journal? He knew that Obi-Wan was going to tell the youth about his past, but why would he cause Anakin grief by subjecting him to the cruelties that were inflicted upon him? It didn’t make sense.

“Perhaps you would just like me to tell you a few things to save you the heartache of reading…”

“No, thank you. My Master wants me to read this and I’m going to. I don’t need anything from you, Master Jinn and neither does Obi-Wan.”

“Anakin, please, just listen to me. You are young and you…”

“I what? If Obi-Wan wants me to read this, then nothing you can say will change my mind. In case you’ve forgotten, Master Jinn, you are not my Master.”

Qui-Gon did not stop the young man as he pushed by him. He stared after Anakin until the boy was out of sight. The Jedi didn’t want to think about the contents of the journal, but after all these years, he could still recall the pain and torment that permeated the words on the page. Yes, Anakin would perhaps understand what led up to Obi-Wan taking Elad’s life, but would he be able to accept it? That question had yet to be answered.

I get first post! Yay! dancing This is such a remarkable story. I think Qui-Gon has some very valid concerns about Anakin reading Obi-Wan's journal, but he's going about it the wrong way. It's a pity he and Obi-Wan are on the outs right now, because Anakin may need someone he trusts to talk to after he reads a few passages. Qui-Gon needs to remember how supportive and non-judgmental he was when Obi-Wan was younger. That's what Obi-Wan needs right now, not criticism and second-guessing.

Superb post! applause

There are several concerns to Anakin reading Obi-Wan's journal... for one, it is almost certain to decrease, if not totally eliminate, his faith in the Jedi Order. But directly disparaging his ability to handle the information isn't going to accomplish anything. shame_on_you Hopefully the journal will bring more good than ill by helping Anakin to understand his master.

And they didn't let Palpatine in- good! dancing But what are his plans now... worried

Looking forward to more!

OK, so Anak and Wan are not happy with Quiggy. Siri(I couldn't find a nickname for her) is the one that knows it all. Porpoise is getting nasty and so is Natoes.
HARSH DUDE! DOWNRIGHT HARSH!
Especially to me because I have phobias.
Nice and intense, eh? My favorite.
Poor Anak, gets it all hard on his skinny face.
Gosh! I never knew I blab this much. At this rate, I'll be like 'Toadsworth' in a month!
Siri is awesome, as usual.
Quiggy needs to pull himself together(didn't say you were a pair of curtains, Quiggy). Interrupt more! You're ancient and archaic compared to Anak and Wan! INTERRUPTION IS A TREASURABLE RIGHT!
