Title: Anakin, Anakin. No-o-o!
Timeframe: AoTC AU
Characters: Cannon characters from Ep II may be included
Summary: Plot bunny follows a what if Anakin had listened to a voice he heard shortly after his mother died
Disclaimer: George owns it-- Just another plot bunny that got loose

Tattooine:

The sandstone mountains stood silent witness to a small camp. The small shelters of the band were scattered at the base. The Tuskan raiders used this site often as it gave protection from the elements and provided shade from the two suns that scorched their world. The band was well within unwritten boundaries that the offworlders and farmers did not cross. If they could feel feel secure anywhere it typically was at one of the traditional campsites. Life for the nomads was not easy, but their culture and practices allowed them to live in a very inhospitable area of the galaxy.

But their customs and culture had just caused the death of a human female.

Anakin bowed his head in grief. He had so many thoughts and regrets. He had finally spoken with his mother again only to loser her permanently. His hatred for the Sand People seemed to build in waves. His anger at Jedi rules that had kept him from his family added an undercurrent to the waves of hatred he felt.

For a brief moment he considered trying to release this anger into the Force. But he wanted to do more than feel. He had an opportunity for retribution. He wanted action now. He gave into waves of emotions and set his mother gently on the floor and unclipped his weapon.

Anakin stood and lit his saber and exited the hut. The guards outside attacked him immediately as he exited. They were cut down with a few simple swipes of his saber. The rest of the band heard the screams and rose from around the fire. The warriors jumped in front of the females and young; ready to charge this new foe.

Anakin was ready to strike and kill them all. He heard a voice however; it was not a loud voice, but it pierced him to his core.

“Anakin, Anakin, No!” the voice commanded.

Anakin had been about to slice a raider in half. He faltered and instead sliced the gafi stick in half. But without missing a step he raised his hand and called upon the Force. He pushed back the warriors with a forceful intensity. Some broke bones as they landed meters away. Others scrambled slowly as they were bruised and breathless from the powerful unseen blow.

Anakin stood and held his weapon aloft. The Sand People were in full retreat. He wanted badly to follow immediately and cut every one down. In an instant he decided to wait, to listen. If he heard nothing, he would kill them all.

But his receptiveness was rewarded.

“Anakin, take her home.” The voice of Master Jinn instructed.

“Are you there?” Anakin questioned in a whisper. He hardly dared believe this was possible.

“Yes, now go, for we have much to discuss” Jinn instructed. His promise of future communication was a shock and comfort to the young Jedi.

The small band stood guardedly and watched as the young Jedi picked up his mother. They witnessed him jump to high boulders overlooking the camp. He would be remembered as a powerful warrior, intruder, and enemy. He had stolen their captive, but they knew from whence she came. They would not cross that enemy again.

Jedi Temple:

Deep in meditation the aged Jedi master opened his large green eyes. His meditation had been unusual; Yoda was contemplating the actions of the Separatists when suddently he had felt the pain of young Skywalker. What had been more amazing was the voice he had heard. It had been the voice of Qui-Gon Jinn.

Next Post-- Anakin wonders if he is going crazy, buries his mother.

Ooooh sign me up! I too have wondered what might have happened if Anakin had not answered murder with murder (his first step down the slippery slope) ... or if he had been able to go through true repentance for it. Will love to see how you build the story from here!

Fantastic twist, ditto to what everyone else has said, it really is something that going back to AotC you wonder if Anakin had listened or even heard Qui-Gon, I'd love a PM when you update this one. applause

Oh wow, a very nice beginning! I sometimes wondered what might have happened if Anakin had heard Qui-Gon calling for him to stop his murder of the Tuskens.

Excellent beginning, Ocelotl_Nesto! Great job! happy

I hope to figure out how to send a massive PM list... otherwise i will have to send them one at a time. Thanks for reading..

Tattooine:

Morning broke as Anakin raced the speeder across the sandy wasteland. He remembered this planet too well and did not even allow his mind to ponder the beauty, bleakness, and wilderness that surrounded him.

He was reeling from the night’s events. His grief hung over him like the twin suns of the planet, undeniable, present, and hitting every part of him. He had so many regrets, perhaps he should not have ever left. What if he had come earlier? And why hadn’t he inflicted justice on those savages?

His thoughts ran through these questions without resolution. He did not think to the end of these scenarios. He mentally flirted with the possibilities as a way to keep his grief in check.

The swoop bike rounded a large dune and he could see the Lars homestead in the distance. He shifted too hard and the worn shifter cracked under his boot. He would be stuck in a lower gear as he completed the return.

“That’s not exactly what I needed,” Anakin mumbled to himself. “Mom, I’m bringing you home,” he added. He felt like he was about to cry.

He slowed the bike involuntarily as he felt his grief rise to the surface. The vehicle skimmed the sandy landscape and he cast a long shadow as the sun began to rise. He took deep breaths and focused on the task at hand. He would get his mother home.
Just thinking about it hurt, but he stayed on task monitoring the speed balance and approach in an attempt to blur the pain he had.

His approach triggered the markers of the settlement and he saw people moving near the main entrance. He pulled the swoop bike near the homestead and halted. The sober faces saw the linen wrapped figure on the back of the bike. He walked slowly and with clenched jaw past Padme, Cleigg, and Beru. Owen extended a hand and indicated where Anakin should take the body.

Jedi Temple:

Mace and Yoda sat still in the room where they had been meditating. They had been there for hours attempting to understand what had occurred.

“I still feel the disturbance,” Mace broke the silence.

“Skywalker in pain he is,” Yoda confirmed.

“More there was,” he continued. “Master Jinn I heard.”

If it had been anyone else Mace would have scoffed, but suddenly he felt like a Padawan again. There was still so much to learn.

+++
Lars Homestead:

Padme was returning from helping Beru finish preparing the body. She had only limited memories of Anakin’s mother, but she respected and cared for her. She pondered on the activities of the homestead. No one seemed to talk much, but they all seemed to know what to do. Lars had excavated a grave and Cleigg had stood vigil by his wife’s body.
The Nubian senator wandered around the compound and heard a noise.

The room Padme approached was dark, but she could hear her friend inside. She entered slowly and waited a moment.

“The shifter broke, I am just fixing it,” Anakin looked up and explained

Padme gave a slow nod of her head and relied on her diplomatic training. She knew he was in pain and she hoped he was willing to talk about it. Her open posture and demeanor came naturally and they inspired him to talk.

“I am good at fixing things, you know?” He continued.

“I wish I had fixed them all,” he confessed.

Padme knew he had to strike down some guards, but made an easy escape from the Sand People. But she was glad he had frightened the others back and made an easy get-a-way.

“I know you could have finished them off, but I am glad you didn’t,” Padme stated as she put her arms gently on his shoulder.

“I really wanted to wipe them all out,” he confessed as he looked down.

“You would have made a tragedy into a slaughter. Your mom loved you, it isn’t what she wanted,“ Padme replied. She hugged him for a moment; and he seemed to rest for a moment. She could feel his shoulders begin to shudder and she held him as he wept silently in the dark room.

Anakin’s tears had dried, but the pain was fresh. Anakin continued fixing items in the workshop after Padme had left the room to see what the plans were for services. She knew Anakin needed time alone.

“She was right you know,” the voice of Master Jinn echoed as Anakin adjusted the hydro spanner.

Anakin stopped working and replied aloud, “I have been waiting for you; I hoped I wasn’t going crazy.”

“You chose wisely, and you are not crazy;” Master Jinn returned the conversation to topic.

“I don’t understand why she had to die, why couldn’t I save her?” Anakin blurt out as he threw a metal scrap across the workshop.

“Remember her words Anakin, remember her love. You need to listen to those that care for you like Padme and Obi-wan.” Master Jinn instructed.

“And Palpatine,” Anakin continued the list as he nodded his head.

“Padme and Master Kenobi; even other Jedi,” Qui-Gon corrected.

Anakin didn’t notice the slight, but would remember it later. He stalked around the room and prepared his next question.

“The Force will be with you. We shall talk again later.” Master Jinn ended the conversation.

“No,” Anakin blurted and pounded the workbench.

Just then Owen Lars walked into the room. He understood how Anakin felt.
In a low tone he spoke calmly but his eyes betrayed his true feelings.

“Anakin, it is time we buried our mother.” Owen spoke as he put his hand on his step brother’s shoulder and walked him out the door.

I love the inner landscape that you are painting for Anakin. His thoughts and feelings as he piloted the speeder home were beautifully done ~ not too much and not too little. Will wait patiently (yet with bated breath...) for your next post.

I'm with Qui-Gon. Anakin's not crazy. Grieving, yes, but not crazy. And... Grief can be a good process to go through... sure it sucks to no end, but you come out the other side changed and in some ways more mature than when you went in. (I really hope that made sense...)

Well done and good post. happy

Nice job, and an interesting concept. I have to wonder how much this can/will change things.

I liked how Qui-Gon excluded Palpatine from the list of those who care about Anakin, and have to wonder if he knows, and how much. And if he even suspects, will he warn his fellow Jedi?

Please add me to the PM list! I want to see how this spins itself out!
