A Beautiful Dream

The Naboo night was still, the lake country air unusually heavy and warm as she tossed restlessly in her bed, unable to sleep. Staring out into the darkness, she listened for the song of the night birds or the chirping of nocturnal insects, any sound that would comfort her, assure her that she was not alone. But she would find no such companionship this night. Time was passing slowly, each moment seeming to last a lifetime as sleep continued to elude her. Finally abandoning all pretense of trying, she threw back the covers with a heavy sigh.

And just as she did every night when the loneliness became too much to bear, she walked out onto her balcony and stared up at the stars. Her gaze would wander across the night sky, and she would choose a new star. Perhaps because it was the brightest, or its color intrigued her. The reasons were never the same.

Tonight, she chose a distant star, one that she had never noticed before this evening. It twinkled rapidly, seeming to pulsate like the beating of a heart. Walking to the balcony's edge, she rested her elbows atop the hard stone of the railing as she leaned against it. Gazing up at the twinkling pinprick of light, she imagined as she always did that Anakin was on that tiny star. And as her thoughts turned to him, she allowed herself to imagine that on that same star, maybe, just maybe, Anakin was staring out into the glittering blanket of space, his gaze lifted to the tiny star that was Naboo. And she would wonder, was he thinking of her tonight, too?

It was a foolish thing, she knew. But it was a way to bear the pain, the empty ache in her heart that never seemed to go away. It made him seem so far away from her, yet at the same time, so close, as if in some small way, they were together again.

She felt a small measure of comfort then, standing on her balcony listening to the sound of the waves crashing against the shore as she stared up at Anakin's star. But all too soon, as always, the loneliness began to settle even deeper inside her. And her heart ached as she wondered if she would ever see him again.

Then the bitterness began to well in her throat, the hatred for this war and for what it had taken from her. She was accustomed to its taste, yet found it no more palatable for its familiarity. It burned within her, its poison seeping into her core, seeming to slowly eat away at her spirit, her resolve, not to be content until it left her nothing more than an empty shell.

A gentle breeze began to blow in from the waters, its cool caress a welcome respite from the oppressive warmth. She closed her eyes, reveling in the feel of it as it tickled her bare arms and shoulders, the long slit in the skirt of her silken sleep gown rustling gently and exposing her legs to the night air.

"Anakin…" she whispered into the breeze, the single word carrying with it all of her pain and longing, as she imagined that somehow the winds would carry her voice to him.

She opened her eyes, searching once more for Anakin's star. When she found it again, she was surprised to notice that it seemed larger somehow. As she continued to watch, the star seemed to be moving now, growing ever larger still. And soon, Padmé realized she wasn't seeing a star at all. She waited for what seemed an eternity, refusing to allow herself to hope, as the orb of light continued its track across the night sky. And it wasn't until she heard the low hum of engines that she allowed herself to breathe once more.

As the ship hovered overhead for a moment, its wings seemed to give a little wiggle before it disappeared beneath the nearby tree line, and Padmé laughed with joy at the greeting, his greeting. Returning indoors, she hurried through the palatial estate, its staircases and corridors never before seeming so long and unbearable. Once outdoors again, she ran across the grounds, her bare feet padding silently across the dew-dampened grass. He met her, their bodies colliding in a frantic embrace. Her tears came through joyous laughter as she rained tender kisses along his face.

"It's you," she gasped, pulling back to stare into his eyes. "It's…really you."

He cradled her face in his strong hands and smiled down at her with that roguish grin that always seemed to make her stomach flutter with desire. "I told you I would always come back to you," he assured her, his voice husky and filled with need.

Gathering her into his arms, he carried her back to their sanctuary, ignoring her half-hearted protests that he should put her down. He did not release her until he reached their bedchamber. And there, they stood together, their entwined bodies swaying slowly to music that only they could hear. With shaking fingertips, she slowly rid him of his tunic and gauzy shirt. He abided patiently as she examined his flesh, her tender kisses worrying and fretting over each new wound and scar.

Then he silenced her fears with fervent kisses of his own. Trembling against him, she gasped with longing as he finally lifted her into his arms once more. Carrying her to their bed, he placed her gently atop the silken sheets. He hurriedly removed his boots, his gaze roving hungrily over her and making her blush slightly under his scrutiny. At long last, he climbed into their bed alongside her, gathering her against him as he pulled the bed coverings over them, shielding them in a protective cocoon.

Tonight, there would be no war, no Jedi or Senate.

She touched his face, still unable to believe that they were together at last and needing to feel the warmth of his flesh beneath her fingertips to assure herself that he was real, that this moment was real.

"You're here," she whispered, stroking his cheek.

Anakin nodded, lowering his face to hers. "Where I belong," he murmured against her lips.

She awoke with a start, staring out into the darkness. Confused, she turned to his pillow, her heart sinking when she saw that it was empty. She reached out, touching his side of the bed, only to find it cold.

"It was only a dream," she whispered miserably. Then burying her face into her already tear-stained pillow, she wept softly, cursing her own weakness.

Her tears finally spent, she rose, pulling the pale blue silken robe about her shoulders. Opening the balcony doors, she stepped into the moonlight, her eyes scanning the stars that dotted the night sky, searching for Anakin's star.

She made her choice. It was a blue star this time, its color reminding her of his eyes. Leaning against the balcony railing, she stared up at his star, exhaling with a shuddering breath.

"It was only a beautiful dream…"

If you have to choose between tears and laughter, remember that laughter burns more calories.

I love your descriptive language - it's vivid, and flows wonderfully with the quiet, dark tone of the story. And Padme's distress is very powerfully done.

Wonderful work!

How awful for Padme to wake up from such a beautiful dream. She's probably more depressed now.

So sad, but so beautifully written.
