Title: An Old Friend
Author: JEDIGUNSHIP
Timeframe: 1-2 years after ROTS
Characters: Darth Vader, Kitster Baina
Author's Notes: I had this story in my head for the past week, and I thought it would be a good one-shot story to tell.
Keywords: None
Summary: Darth Vader confesses his crimes to an old friend.
Disclaimer: Lucasfilm, LTD. owns Star Wars, not me.

Kitster Baina took another swig of the Jawa Juice in his cup. He hated most drinks served at cantinas, but the Jawa Juice was acceptable. Alcohol had never made anyone good; those that binged on it were often found wandering the streets drunkenly, asking redundant questions and doing other acts of stupidity. There was no point in consuming alcohol in that large a quantity; maybe it would make you feel better after a long day, but going overboard just made the situation worse. As he thought, he could see another drunken patron tumble off a bar stool and woozily head towards the exit, zig-zagging as he went. When the man had stumbled up the stairs, Kitster took another drink of his juice. At that moment, there was a loud bang, and the drunk man fell down the stairs and landed in a heap. Looking up, Kitster could see four clone troopers enter the Cantina, their masks identical in design. Behind them stood a large figure, dressed in all black with a loud, echoing breather. The barman stopped cleaning a glass and asked "Lord Vader, do you or your men want a drink?"

Vader replied "No, I am here for other reasons. Go back to your business." The troopers moved forwards.

Kitster watched the bar man as he said "Yes, Lord. Is there anything that I can do to assist?"

Vader pointed at the bar man, and the troopers turned around, ready to fire if ordered. "I don't need help. GO BACK TO YOUR BUSINESS! The man shrank a little, as he was being roared at by such a dominant figure.

"I will go back to my business," said the bar man, retrieving his rag to continue cleaning glasses. Kitster looked over at the drunken man; he had tried to stand up but he was so drunk that he flailed like a fish on its side. Looking back at Vader, Kitster took another sip of Jawa Juice, trying to act nonchalant as the four troopers passed. From the corner of his eye, Kitster could see Vader stop in front of his table; looking up, he saw that Vader was looking at him. "You," said Vader, pointing at Kitster. "What is your name? You look...familiar."

"Kitster Baina," Kitster responded.

Vader froze for a few moments. Then, in between mechanical breaths, he said weakly, "Kit...Kitster? Is...is that you?"

"I don't know what you mean, Lord Vader," responded Kitster. He wondered what the Dark Lord of the Sith was trying to get at.

"It is you!" roared Vader happily as he patted Kitster on the shoulder. The clones grabbed their rifles and were prepared to shoot, but Vader waved them away. "Kitster, let's go to a back table. I have a lot of things to tell you." Kitster slowly ascended from his chair, wondering why Vader was talking to him. To most people, he was a nobody; how could Darth Vader, Lord of the Sith, actually know him?

The troopers led the two to a table in the back, pushing a patron out of their seat and forcing him to go to the front of the cantina. Sitting down, Vader said "You are probably wondering why I am taking time to talk to you."

"Yes, I am wondering why you are talking to me," replied Kitster. "I am a nobody."

"No, you are a somebody to me. Do you know who I really am?"

Kitster studied Vader's mask. The eyes seemed to bore into Kitster's own, making him wonder what Vader was seeing on the other end. "I know you are Lord Vader."

Vader laughed. "No, I meant who am I?"

"I have no idea." Kitster said plainly; he wanted to know why Vader was spending the time talking to him.

"I am Anakin Skywalker. Darth Vader is my alibi, if you will."

Kitster's eyes widened. He had not heard the name of his friend since he had left almost 15 years earlier. "Ani?" he asked faintly.

"Now you remember," said Vader. "You stuck up for me when the other kids laughed at me. You helped me win the Boonta Eve podrace. You were my," he swallowed, "friend."

"What happened?" Kitster asked. He wanted to know what Vader had to say to him.

"After I left Tatooine?" Vader asked. "I became a Jedi; I was one of the best, too. My piloting skills were phenomenal. However, Obi-Wan Kenobi, my teacher in the Force, said I was too bold. He was holding me back from my true potential. Chancellor Palpatine saw my true side, and beckoned for me to use my talents to achieve greater powers than Jedi could ever dream of. However, that was my downfall."

"I am intrigued by this," said Kitster, now believing that his one-time friend was under the mass of vile machinery and mask.

"It all started when my mother died. You remember her, don't you?" Kitster nodded; he remembered Shmi very well. "Well, I found out from Watto that he had sold her to the Lars family. When I went out there, I was told that she was kidnapped by Tusken Raiders. I rode a swoop bike to their camp; there, I found her dying. It broke me apart, drove me from the Jedi way. When the Raiders found out that I was there, I slaughtered them with my lightsaber. All of them; all the men, women and children; all of them."

"So that doomed you?" asked Kitster. He was shocked to hear that his friend would do such an evil act.

"No, there was more. When the Clone Wars started, I became famous throughout the galaxy for my brave deeds. Then, I was sent to rescue Cahncellor Palpatine from the cyborg General Grievous."

"I heard about you during the Wars," Kitster chipped in. "I knew that you were famous, but then the war ended, and you disappeared."

"Obi-Wan and I fought with Count Dooku, and I executed himwhen he was unarmed. It was agains tthe Jedi Code, but I did it anyway; I hated Dooku for killing so many Jedi and cutting off my hand."

"He cut your hand off?" asked Kitster, amazed that Vader had told him this. A Sith Lord telling a comman man that his hand had been cut off was not a common sight by any means.

"I was married," continued Vader, "and we were expecting a child soon. Then, I had visions that she would die soon, and I sought a way to protect her from that fate. I went to Palpatine for help; he said that joining the Dark Side of the Force would give me the power to save her from dying. He then revealed himself to be the true Sith Lord, and I reported it to the Jedi. I was told to stay out of the attempted arrest of the Chancellor, but I went anyway. When I got there, Palpatine was at his strength's end; I protected him from Master Windu, who got killed a moment later. From that point, I became Palpatines apprentice, and I also became what you see now."

"What is the suit for?" asked Kitster. He was interested in knowing what the purpose of the suit was. Not many people needed a suit everywhere they went. Sure, he pondered, some species need suits for certain enviornments, but why would a human being need a suit like that?

"I...I cannot tell you. Actually, I need to get going." He stood up, the troopers snapping to attention. "Goodbye, old friend." With that, he stalked out of the Cantina's back exit, leaving Kitster sitting at the back table. Kitster had digested what Vader said, but it still seemed a little far-fetched; his friend had become that? On the other hand, his friend was still alive. Standing up, Kitster made his way to the front and tossed a credit chip on the bar counter. With that, he passed the flopping drunken man and made his way up the stairs and out of the cantina.

Haha, first reply! tongue
I really like this, Gunny! It's cool that Vader can tell someone about everything. Well, mostly everything. Too bad Kit is now in shock from knowing that his best friend is now a Sith Lord.

Well, I couldn't say everything. Otherwsie, it would have been a story about recapping everything in the PT; I needed to cut to the chase, so I omitted certain things out (mostly because I forgot to put them in there). Thanks for responding. happy

I found it very interesting that Vader had a difficult time telling Kitster they used to be friends. Almost for the better he left out the slaughter of the Jedi Temple and the duel on Mustafar...Kit's reaction (as most people would probably react to that) would not make Vader a happy person.

Good job happy

Yeah. Also, those kinds of things would be against the rules of the forum (especially in detail), so they are probably better left out. Thanks for responding.
