Title: Jedi in Exile: Surviving
Author: JEDIGUNSHIP
Characters: OC's
Timeframe: 2 months after RotS
Summary: Based on the one-shot "A Captured Jedi", Myton Upewa, a Jedi Padawan, and his Master try to flee the Empire two months after the start of the Great Jedi Purge.

Rays of sunlight lit up the small forest clearing, waking Myton Upewa from his slumber. As he looked around groggily, he could see that he was alone in the small clearing. Clambering out of his sleeping bag, he started walking around, attempting to focus his vision so that he could see. Ruffling his long red hair, Myton thought about the events of the day before. Not only had he been spared a violent death, but he had actually escaped the clutches of a dicision of clone soldiers. Now, he and his Master were hiding in a forest on another planet, a planet which he did not know anything about. Nor did he care to know; no matter where they went, there was bound to be clone soldiers bent on finishing off any Jedi they saw. Nowhere was safe for a Jedi; they would either have to live in exile for the rest of their lives, or challenge the troopers and die for the Jedi cause.

As he walked around, Myton felt very alone. Although the Force was with him, he still felt somewhat cold in the face of current events. Not even the Force and its radiance could cover up the empty void once filled by the now-deceased Jedi Order. Most of the members dead within a week, others dead on the last day of the war. Myton knew that he had been lucky; not once, but twice he was saved from death. However, he knew that he could not run forever; eventually, the clones would come looking for any remaining Jedi. On the other side of his conscience, the Living Force encouraged him to let go of his anxiety and embrace its guidance. Looking down, he could see his Master's sleeping bag; it had been abandoned for some time, making him wonder where she had gone off to. Was there a settlement nearby? Would they be safe here? Sitting on a small stump, he waited for her return.

As he waited, he used the Force to discover life behidn the trees, in the trees and even underneath the very ground where his feet rested. Although not enirely enamored by natural life, Myton found this to be calming, as he realized that he was not alone. But, the empty void of Jedi souls still nagged at him; he could be next. He had been prepared to die, to sacrifice himself for the cause before being rescued; he would go out a hero to the Order. Even if he died, he would be freed form the worry, the sorrow, the anger at the Empire and its evil deeds. Revenge does not pay, he thoguht to himself, knowing that revenge and lust for power was the ways of the Dark Side of the Force, the way of the Emperor and his pawn, Lord Vader. Myton would not become a pawn of the Emperor's plan; he would die before joining the Empire. Courage welled up inside of him; when the time came, he would do what was right.

Suddenly, Myton felt a presence in the nearby forest. Standing up, he reached for his lightsaber. Whatever it was, he would take it down if it showed any signs of menace. He had to protect himself; if it were clones, he would take them out. Igntiting his saber, Myton slowly approached the brush, waiting for the presence inside to come out into the clearing. The Force would not tell him who it was. As he waited, his breath grew shallow; it was like a hunt, only that he was the prey. Whatever it was, it came out of the bushes, and Myton jumped, his lightsaber humming towards the other being. With lightning-quick reflexes, the other being produced an orange lightsaber and easily blocked Myton's strike. "What in the blazes are you doing, Myton?" his Master asked incredulously.

"Oh, I'm sorry, Master. I didn't know that was you."

"You're lucky I have quick reflexes," she said, deactivating her lightsaber. "Still, why did you attack?"

"I felt a presence in the Force, but I could not tell what it was," Myton said sheepishly.

"I think yesterday's events have worn you out," she said, putting the saber inside her traveller's cloak.

"Yeah, I slept well last night."

"You still have a lot to learn, padawan," she said, cracking a smile. "However, you have larned one important life skill this way."

"What?" Myton was anxious to know what he had learned.

"You have let the Force be your eyes, let you sense a presence. However, you are still inexperienced with that. But, you will get there someday."

"Where were you?" asked Myton, his red hair rustling in the breeze.

"I found a small settlement on the other side of the forest," she said. "Small community. The locals have told me that there have been no sightings of the Empire on this planet."

"Are we safe?"

"That I don't know." She picked off a hair that was sticking in her face and let it drop down to the ground. "However, I think that it is time to keep moving."

"Should I pack up?" asked Myton, pointing to the sleeping bags.

"I think that it's your turn to pack up," she said, her golden hair a sharp contrast to her pale peach-colored complexsion.

"All right," said Myton, grabbing his sleeping bag and folding it. "Where are we going now?"

"I asked the locals about that, and they said that there's a planet not too far away from here. It has a desert climate on one side, but a nicer, more temeprate climate on the other side. I'm sure that there would be troopers on the more habitable side, so we should gather supplies in the desert region."

"Wouldn't it be dangerous to walk around in Jedi robes in public?" asked Myton.

"I have a cloak for you," she said. "It's on the ship."

As she readied the ship for takeoff, Myton gathered all of the materials on the ground. Using the Force, he got the rope to bind everything together, leaving him to carry ti to the ship. He could try to lift it using his powers, but it was too big and he was too inexperienced. Hauling it over his shoulder, Myton walked towards the ship. As he walked, he thought about their journey; no matter where they would go in the galaxy, they would still be on the run. Most planets probably would have Imperial presence on them, so they would have to read carefully. It would be a very long and exhausting journey, but at least they had the Force with them. Loading the pack into the ship's cargo hold, Myton grabbed himself a helmet and climbed into his seat. When he closed the hatch, his Master started up the engines. As the ship pulled off the ground, Myton looked one one final time. The clearing he had been in looked like a dot in comparison to the surrounding foliage. On the other side of the forest, he could see a small community, outlined with fences to keep herds of animals out of the forest. With that, he could see nothing more in detail as the ship entered the atmosphere and the realm of space.

Not a bad start at all. I'd love to see more of this, actually.

I'm in the process of hatching out some ideas for a post-Order 66 fanfic/fanfic series, myself, and it's always a pleasure to read others work within the time frame.

Chapter 2:

As the ship got into space above the planet, Myton wondered where this other planet was. "Where is this other planet?" he asked.

"Not too far," his Master said. "We'll get their quickly, even at sublight speed."

"But why that planet?" he asked. "Aren't there other places that we could go, safer planets to hide on?"

"Myton." She turned around, looking him in the eye. "No matter where we go, we'll be in at least some danger. I asked the citizens of that village, and they said they think that this planet is safe from the Empire. However, we cannot live in space the entire time. We need supplies, and there is only one way to do that."

"Go down to a planet," finished Myton. "I know."

"You still need my guidance," she said. "Two years is not nearly enough time for you to learn the ways of the Force and become a Jedi. Most padawans need several years to become a good Jedi Knight, and you have only had two. However," she confessed, "you are talented. Yet, you still have to be refined."

"In what way?" asked Myton.

"I have said it before; your ability to use the Force is still weak compared to my abilities. For example, when you were packing up the ship, I noticed you carrying the items. Obviously, you wanted to use the Force to carry the items, am I not correct?"

"Correct," sighed Myton.

"I know you mean well," she said, brushing a hair out of her face. "After two years, a padawan-master team get to know each other, develop a strong bond that continues after the padawan has become a Knight and is now teaching their own pupil. In fact, I know you very well. However, now with the extinction of the Order, you need to know more about the Force, more things than normal padawans would ever learn under normal circumstances. You have to stick close, learn everything you can from me while you still can. There is no telling if we will be tracked down by clones, so you must be ready."

"I . . ." started Myton, but she cut him off.

"Myton, I need to tell you something. This is not a game; this is real. And you will have to learn the ways of the Force. It may seem like overkill, forcing you to learn so much in so little time, but we don't have the luxury of time. You're lucky that you survived the clones back there, and there's no telling if those clones contacted the Empire. If we have been reported, then we have no choice but to blend in with the local population. I promise that you will still be able to train, but it will be more sporadic, as we will not have as much time to work on anything. Also, it may require you to learn by yourself; during intense situations, Jedi have been known to use powers they never knew they had."

"I have unnatural powers?" asked Myton curiously. "Like what?"

"Myton, I'm serious about this. Many Jedi, all more powerful and experienced than you are, have been killed by the Empire's soldiers; they knew their powers, but were still bested. I'm afraid that if you are tested too early, that you would fail and maybe pay the price for it. Still, you must learn how to defend yourself, and that can only be accomplished through hands-on training. I may not like it, but the droids at the Temple could only do so much to prepare you for combat; the real thing is much more difficult, much more unpredictable. In real combat, you will not be fighting against a programmed opponent that can be read easily; you will have to shift your strategies on the fly and trust the Force to guide you."

"I thought that the Temple droids were difficult to defeat," offered Myton.

"Yes, but only the first time you encounter them. As you continue sparrign with one, its patterns start becoming repetitive. A trained Jedi could take this advantage and bes tthe droid easily, but you, an inexperienced padawan, would not notice such things. For you, it would take maybe 20 sessions for you to fully understand what it takes more experienced Jedi once or twice to figure out on their own."

"There have been patterns," said Myton.

"So you have noticed them?" she asked.

"Well, not a whole lot. Sometimes, it seems a little easier; like I know when the droid is going to make a stab."

"But you do recognize the pattern?"

"Not much; I use mostly my eyes to train, and it seems as if the droid makes different moves every time."

"Have I not taught you to trust the Force?" she asked. "Has it still not sunk in yet? Master Yoda tells you to be mindful of the Force, to let it become your greatest ally. Your eyes can deceive you; what you see may not be correct."

"But I find it hard to concentrate hard enough to let it aid me during sparring," said Myton. "I just can't do both at the same time."

"Then you'll have to gain more experience. Myton, I like your energy, your enthusiasm. You do things that other padawans would have difficulty doing. Not many padawans can call their lightsaber to them from such a distance. However, you still need time to understand how everything fits together. The puzzle of the Force is still not revealing itself to you; you must learn what pieces go where, and how they work in symbiance to make something whole."

"Master, I was wondering. The Jedi Code states that there is no death, only the Force. On that planet, I was scared; I was afraid to die."

"Remember your early training, padawan. There is no death, only the Force. When a Jedi dies, their spirit inhabits the Force, becomes a part of it. If you train your senses enough, you can hear the Force and the spirits of thousands of Jedi. Only if you clear your mind can you acheive such a power."

"But I was scared. I was driven by fear. It was impossible to drive out the fear that I had," Myton said.

"Naturally," she answered. "When you are inexperienced in the Force, a moment of pressure may feel like a deadweight on your shoulders, dragging you down. You must learn to let the Force guide your actions; let go of your fear. If you can do that, I think that next time you end up in that situation, the outcome will be better for you."

"You really think so?" Myton asked curiously.

"I really do," she replied. "Looks like we're coming up on the planet now. The citizens were correct."

"What planet is it?" asked Myton, looking through the window.

"Rongen," she replied. "We're going to land in Rongen City, the capital of the desert portion of the planet. Now, before we land, I have some things to tell you. First, we are going to find someplace to slip into the other garb, so that we can blend in with the general populace. Second, I have no idea who or what could be down there, but do not get angry. Do not draw your lightsaber unless you are physically threatened; we cannot afford to draw unwanted attention. Third, use the Force to guide you; let it help you out. If we get separated, you will not have your comlink."

"What? No comlink?" asked Myton.

"It can be intercepted, Myton. Instead, use the Force. Let it guide you back."

"All right. I had another question, though."

"What would that be?" She turned around and prepared for the descent onto the planet.

"Are Jedi allowed to have courage and bravery?"

His Master had to mull that one over for a few moments, finally responding. "No, Jedi are not allowed to have courage and bravery."

"We're keepers of the peace; why can't we be brave?" asked Myton.

"Because you are already courageous and brave. Most people think of courage and bravery as something that only the strong have; Jedi use both principles constantly."

"I don't understand . . ." said Myton, confused by this last statement.

"Courage and bravery only apply to those who beleive that such things exist," she said. "For Jedi, there are no such things. We do such extraordinary means of courage and bravery that it makes others' versions of the principles pale in comparison. However, if we are lead to beleive that we are strong, the we also tend to believe that we are better. At a certain point, that belief of being "better" makes you unhappy with your current situation; it makes you want more. Once that occurs, you start to delve into the Dark Side of the Force, and then you, like Vader, are truly lost."

"So, Jedi are both courageous and brave?" asked Myton.

"To those we protect, maybe. But not to ourselves ; we know better than to think of ourselves as better than those we protect. We are there to defend the galaxy, not conquer it."

"I understand now," said Myton plainly.

"Good. Any more questions?"

"I have one more."

"What would that be?" she asked.

"Is the Dark Side more powerful?" asked Myton. He wanted to know if there was a difference in the two sides of the Force.

"No, it is not more powerful. More seductive, yes, but not more powerful."

"Then why go to those lengths to acheive something that doesn't give you anythign more than what you already have?"

"Simple. Sith want power; lots of it. They believe that fear, anger and power are the true paths to greatness in the Force. Although they may think that they are doing the right thing, the Jedi beleive that they are disrupting order in the galaxy."

"And now the Sith have wiped out the Order," concluded Myton. "So, do the Sith have a different point of view than the Jedi?"

"If you consider it a point of view, then yes. The ideals of the groups are exact opposites; the Jedi believe in peace, while the Sith beleive in conquest. However, the Sith might beleie that the Jedi are truly evil, and that their own acts are bringing peace to the galaxy. From the Jedi standpoint, the Sith are truly evil and are destroying the galxy. It's a war of beliefs, Myton; you'd better understand that."

"I think I do," said Myton.

"We'll talk more about this later." She pressed a button on the console as the ship entered the atmosphere of Rongen. As they came towards the planet, Myton could see small dots in a sea of yellow; he guessed that the yellow was sand. Duh, he thought, this is a desert region, so there will be sand everywhere.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As the ship descended closer and closer to the planet, Myton could see individual people milling around on the streets, no two looking alike. "Yes, I'm looking for a place to park my ship," said his Master over the ship's com system. "Do you have space available?"

"We have a sheltered area that you can park it in," said the being on the other end of the line. "Will that satisfy you?"

"I'll take it," she said.

"Very good," the other being responded. "I am sending you the coordiantes right now."

"Thank you," she responded, uploading the coordinates of the shelter on the ship's computer.

"I hope you enjoy your day here on Rongen," said the being before endign the transmission.

"Myton, we are about to land. Gather all of your gear," she said, easing up on the ship's controls. Myton started to collect some things from the storage bins.

"What should I take?" he asked.

"Why not just grab the most important items?" she suggested.

"I want to make sure that I'm prepared," he said confidently.

"Just don't slip your comlink into your pack, because I will not have mine."

Myton slipped his comlink onto the shelf and grabbed a box. "Do we need cheese cubes?" he asked.

"No, the ration cubes should last a while."

"How long are we going to stay here?" he asked.

"A few days, a few weeks; I have no idea. We can come back to the ship to geab supplies if necessary, but chances are that we'll have to grab some things while we're here. Just in case we start running out of supplies."

"Are we there yet?" asked Myton.

"There's the park right there." She pointed. "We're almost there. Just hold on a minute, and then we'll disembark."

Myton felt excited, but something was troubling him. It was an unfamiliar planet; he was always wary when he stepped foot on a new world. The only place he felt comfortable in was Coruscant, but that was not a place to go now. He would have to get used to moving from planet to planet, and the thought made him uncomfortable. "Oh, make sure that you put on the cloak that I've provided."

"All right," said Myton, slipping into the cloak easily. Its edges reached down to his knees, while the sleeves felt a little itchy. He scratched at his hand, and the itch left. "I'm ready to go," he said, grabbing his pack.

When the ship landed, the two stepped down the boarding ramp and onto the ground. They were in a large hangar, both ends which were open. Faint light was provided by small power cells on the ceiling, but the hangar was still very dark. "Well, let's get going," his Master said. "With any luck, we can find some housing quickly and maybe explore a little bit afterwards. Sound like a plan to you?" Myton nodded; he wanted to have a look around. As they walked out into the light, Myton had to cover his eyes; the light was blinding him. As his eyes slowly ajusted, he could make out several large buildings across from the hangar, their simple designs effective in both build and appearance. The nearest building had small slit-like air ports, and a huge front door. Another building had three stories, and had gaping windows to let the air in. Looking down the street, he spotted a building that had a sign sayign "INN" on an old wooden sign.

"There's an inn," Myton said. "Should we check to see if we can stay there?"

"If we are to blend in with the crowd, we can't afford to blow our cover. You have sharp eyes, padawan; I'm proud of you for figuring that out yourself."

"It was nothing," said Myton, cracking a smile.

"Come on, then," she said, heading towards the inn.

Myton followed his Master down the street and to the inn. On the way, the beings that they passed paid them no mind; except for a few short looks, no one seemed to care. "I think the disguise is working," muttered Myton.

"I think so too," she said, stepping through the door and into the inn's lobby. As Myton followed, he could see that the lobby was very plain-looking. Besides the counter, there were three gnarly old armchairs surrounding a small table in one corner, while a large holoscreen was located in the other corner. The attendant, a grizzled old man, said "Welcome to the Rongen Inn. How may I help ye?"

"We want to rent out two of your rooms," Myton's Master said. "Do you have two available right now?"

"Let me check," said the man, working the buttons on an outdated and dirty datapad. "It looks like we have lots of rooms available. Do you want to pick two in any one location?"

"We'll take two at the ends of the inn," she said.

"Can do!" said the grizzled man, reaching down and grabbing a pair of room keys. "There ya go. Now, the 'freshers are right next to your rooms. Also, you're always welcome down here in the lobby. Enjoy your stay!"

"We intend to," she said. Waving for Myton to follow, they left the lobby and started up the staircase to their rooms.
