Chapter 1

The night air on Coruscant sent a slight chill up Padme Amidala’s arms. Not that long, perhaps only a couple hours, had passed since she noticed the red glow and smoke coming from the area of the Jedi Temple. Her only thoughts were of her husband and protector, Anakin Skywalker. Knowing deep inside that he was there, she sent her thoughts out to him. Hoping that with his Jedi abilities and their deep connection together, he would be able to hear her.

“My dear Ani, please come back to me. Please come back safe,” she whispered.

During her thoughts, carrying her closer to her husband, she was interrupted.

“Mistress Padme, would you like a coat, or something to keep you warm? You seem to be shivering.”

It was C3-PO.

Since the first time she had met him, at Anakin's humble dwellings on Tatooine, she had thought that he was always trying to please everyone. Not that it was a bad thing. At times it was quite welcome, and other times he could make you laugh, though that was not his intent.

“No Threepio, that’s alright. I just got a quick shiver.” She looked down as she rubbed her belly, then back towards the Temple. “Has there been any word about what’s happening by the Temple?”

With what seemed to be a bit of disappointment Threepio replied, “I’m afraid not, Mistress Padme. I have been scanning the Holo Net and all available frequencies, as per your request, but there is no news. There has been mention of a fire, but nothing else. I’m sure we will know something soon enough.”

“Yes, I suppose we will,” she commented, half to herself.

“Would you like a hot cup of tea perhaps?”

With tears welling up, she choked out, “No Threepio, that’s okay. I would just like to be alone right now. Please let me know if there is any news though.”

Clearly seeing her holding back tears, Threepio shuffled in his place, not wanting to leave her. However, he knew her to be a strong person, and decided it best to obey her wishes. As he left in his stiff humanoid shuffle, he muttered, mostly to himself “Dear, oh dear.”

Waiting until Threepio had left the room, and unable to hold back the tears any longer, she let them go. Tears because of the uncertain fate of her husband; tears because this war, that had been going on for far too long, seemed to be tearing not only the Republic apart, but her and Anakin as well. The fighting had made it so hard on them, mostly because Anakin and Obi-Wan would be called out for many missions, leaving her sometimes for weeks. And even when she did get to see him, they had to hide and keep their marriage a secret from the Jedi Order. Now they were going to have a baby. The one thing that she did not want to do was raise a baby during the war. But now she was going to have no choice, it seemed.

How she longed to be back on the quiet plains of Naboo. She had mentioned to Anakin how she wanted to raise their child there, but he seemed a little distracted and never really gave her a definite answer. But what did she really expect? It was the middle of a war, and he was one of the great hero’s of the war. He had just returned from saving the Supreme Chancellor and eliminating Count Dooku when she gave him the news of being pregnant.

Now all she wanted was to feel his arms around her again, reassuring her that it was all going to be fine. She wanted to hear Anakin tell her that soon the war would be over, and that they could be together once again.

Through the tears clouding her vision, she looked back at the red glow that was coming from the Temple. She had no doubts now that the blaze was coming from there, as she could see even from as far away as she stood the flames and smoke growing higher.

I, for one, do not think the problem was that the band was down.I think that the problem may have been
that there was a Stonehenge monument on the stage that was in danger of being crushed by a dwarf.

Chapter 2

‘Now rise, Lord Vader. Go and bring peace to the galaxy.’

Those words kept running through Anakin’s mind. It was strange to hear his new name: Darth Vader. The new name bestowed upon him by his long time friend and recently revealed Sith Lord, Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, or Darth Sidious, as was his Sith name. Only after he saved Palpatine from being killed by Mace Windu, realizing that the Jedi would surely kill him for what he had done, did he vow to follow the Sith. It was a means to an end. A way of saving Padme.

As his Jedi star fighter made its way through the traffic on Coruscant, his mind drifted towards his wife. Now he would no longer have to hide their marriage, nor the child that was to be born. The thought brought a smile to his face.

He decided to stop at her apartment and let her know that the end of the war was indeed soon. He was brimming with anticipation to see her face when he told her of the new mission he had been given. There was no need for secrets anymore. To think, he had been given the most important mission in this war. That finally, someone believed he was capable of handling such an important and momentous task. The one person who always believed that he was capable of so much more than he himself sometimes did. The Jedi were blind not to see his true potential. He knew that now. Under the guidance of Sidious he could discover his true potential and be with Padme, the woman he loved, openly, not hiding in secret, as if it were some sort of crime. Love. A word used by the Jedi as though it were a plague. The Jedi spoke of it, but obviously never really experienced it. The Sith embraced it and used it. Now Anakin would use his love for Padme to fuel him. Only his love for her could save her, even if she didn’t want to admit it.

Pulling alongside the balcony ledge of their apartment, he saw that she had been crying. But why? Something must be wrong. He hurried to get himself out of the fighter’s cockpit. Once cleared of the canopy, he rushed to her, and held her in his arms.

“Why are you crying? Is everything alright?” he asked gently.

As he said this, he could feel her squeezing him tighter than he could remember. He felt her belly against his. It was a warm feeling that he welcomed. He caressed her hair and tenderly kissed her on the head.

“Oh, Anakin! I saw the fire at the Temple. I knew you were there, and I feared that you may have been hurt.” She looked up at him, still letting the tears flow.

He looked down at her, meeting her gaze. She was still as beautiful as the first day that he met her at Watto’s. It disturbed him to see her cry. He hated to see her suffer in any way. But soon she would have no more reasons to cry.

“I’m fine Padme. In fact, I’m more than fine.” A slight smile came across his face. “The Chancellor has given me a mission that will end this war… for good. I’m finally being recognized for what I can do for the Republic, not being held back.”

Padme noticed that he seemed to be drifting in thought.

“What are you talking about Ani? Why is the Temple on fire?” she asked, bringing him out of his thoughts. Right away, she noticed that the smile left her husbands face.

“The Chancellor has found out where the cowardly leaders of the Separatists are hiding. He is sending me to Mustafar to deal with them personally,” he answered with a bit of finality.

“And the fire at the Temple?”

“There was no other way, my love. After what the Jedi tried to do…”

“What they’ve tried to do?” A total look of shock came over her face. “Anakin, what did they try to do? What are you talking about?”

Anger seemed to be building inside Anakin. As he looked at her, she shrank back a little. “The Jedi have been lying to us this whole time. To me, Padme! They tried to kill the Chancellor tonight, in an attempt to gain control of the Republic for themselves.”

“But that can’t be. The Jedi are servants of the Republic, sworn protectors of upholding...”

He cut her off.

“I was there Padme! I got there just in time to stop Master Windu from striking the Chancellor down. The Chancellor was defenseless, and Windu,” he said his name with such disdain, “Windu was standing over him with his lightsaber, accusing the Chancellor of being responsible for the war. Then he went to finish off the Chancellor. I stopped him. I saved the Chancellor from the Jedi Counsel, and their plans.” His face seemed to distort with pain and anger.

Gently, she let go of him, taking a few steps back. She looked out the window of her apartment, towards the Temple. The red glow was not as bright now. No doubt because of the response of the fire suppression teams. Perhaps Anakin was correct; perhaps the fire was not that bad. But something still didn’t feel quite right.

She looked back at him. “How are you sure that the Jedi were attempting to overthrow the Chancellor and take control of the Republic?”

“They wanted me to spy on him Padme,” he said with a little pain as he brought back the memory. “They wanted to know what he was doing and when. Obi-Wan asked me to do this after a session of the counsel, so it would not be on record. Then the Chancellor confronted me about it. Somehow he had an idea of what they were plotting.” His brow furrowed. “If the Jedi weren’t out for control of the Republic, then why all the secrecy? Why would they have me lie?”

She couldn’t respond. There was so much information, so fast. She once again walked over to him and hugged him.

“I don’t know Anakin,” she sighed, “I’m sorry you have been put through this. Maybe there is a logical explanation to it all. There must be.” She tightened her hold on him. “Please, tell me that you’ll come back to me after your mission. Tell me that we will sit down and figure this out together.”

Anakin melted in her arms. He became a silly little boy at the mere sight of her smile, thought there was none on her face at the moment. He held her and could feel the love from her flow into him like a warm stream. He wanted to stand there and hold her forever, but he knew what must be done. He had to go and put an end to this war once and for all.

“I promise Padme. Nothing will keep us apart again. We will be together, I swear it. Promise me that you will wait here for me.”

“I will.”

He let go of her, looked into her eyes, and tenderly kissed her. Walking over to his fighter, he noticed C3-PO talking to R2. Getting into his cockpit, he looked back at Padme. She had a look of concern on her face. He gave her a brief smile, trying to dispel that concern. Then he fired up the engines.

“Ready R2?”

The little droid replied with a whistle.

He pressed a button and closed the cockpit. He left the balcony and headed towards the vacuum of space. Once in orbit around Coruscant, he attached his fighter to an empty hyperdrive ring.

“Are the coordinates set?” he asked R2 as the fighter locked into the hyperdrive boost ring.

The affirmative came back from the droid, who had been his companion from the time he left Tatooine, and he engaged the hyperdrive engines. With a slight lurch, pinning Anakin back into his seat, the fighter jumped into hyperspace, leaving behind Coruscant. And Padme.

****

As Anakin left, Padme couldn't help but be concerned about all that he had just told her. Could it all be true? Could the Jedi be capable of something like this? She just wasn't sure. It was such a hard concept to grasp, especially after being close to not only Anakin, but Obi-Wan. One of the gentlest human beings she had met. Yet when called for, he could be a most formidable adversary.

While she was pondering these thoughts, C3-PO came into the room.

"Mistress Padme, a special session of the Senate has been called by the Supreme Chancellor. Your presence has been requested."

"Thank you Threepio. Would you mind making sure that my attendants have something picked out for me? I will be along in a minute." Her voice was as calm as it usually was.

She thought to herself, 'Well, maybe this session will shed some light on the subject. The timing is too coincidental.'

She looked once more where the fighter had been only moments before, then she left the room.

****

'Follow your feelings, Obi-Wan, and find him you will.'

'Where, on all of Coruscant, am I supposed to find one person? Who would know where he might be?' With that last thought, it came to Obi-Wan, like a smack to the face.

Padme.

They seemed to spend an awful lot of time with each other, and there was no denying that they shared some sort of connection. After the battle on Geonosis, the time Anakin spent with her would suggest that they were very good friends, or possibly more.

Obi-Wan shook his head, trying to expel the thought. 'He knows better than that. He knows what it means to be a Jedi. What it MEANT to be a Jedi,’ Obi-Wan corrected himself. Anakin was a Sith lord now, much to the disappointment and heartache of Obi-Wan. He veered his Intergalactic Speeder towards Padme's apartment.

After he docked, he was greeted by C3-PO.

"Master Kenobi, what a pleasant surprise."

"Hello Threepio. Is Padme here?"

"Actually yes. She just came back from the Senate. Should I get her for you?"

"If you wouldn't mind, yes. It's quite urgent."

As he shuffled out of the room, Obi-Wan pondered how to tell her about what was going on.

A few minutes later, she entered the room. She was dressed casual, yet dignified.

A worried look came over her as she saw the concern on his face. She walked over to the couch and sat at the end farthest from him.

"Obi-Wan, what brings you here?" she asked as she motioned for him to sit down.

"I'm afraid it's not good news. Have you seen Anakin?"

"Why?" she asked, shifting a bit.

“I need to find him, Padme. Something terrible has happened at the Temple, and across the galaxy for that matter.”

“You mean the attempted assassination of the Chancellor, and rebellion, by the Jedi?”

Obi-Wan looked horrified. “Padme, what are you talking about?”

She could only look at the ground as she talked, “The Chancellor held a special meeting of the Senate. He went into great detail about how he was attacked by Jedi Masters, and that the Jedi were plotting to take control of the Republic. Anakin told me...”

“So you have seen him then?” he abruptly cut her off, though not on purpose.

“Yes.”

“How long ago?”

“Why?”

“Padme, please, I must know,” he asked, letting just a bit more concern show.

“Not long ago. Perhaps a few hours.” She then lifted her head and looked Obi-Wan in the eyes. “Please, Obi-Wan, tell me that they are wrong. The Jedi aren’t capable of something like this are they?”

Obi-Wan couldn’t help but feel for her.

“No, I can assure you that the Jedi were never plotting to take control of the Republic. In fact, it is quite the opposite.” He paused for a moment. “This may be hard for you to hear, Padme, but you must listen to what I am about to say.”

“What is it Obi-Wan?” As she said those words, she was not so sure that she wanted to find out. Deep inside, she knew that it was probably worse than she imagined.

He continued, “Chancellor Palpatine is the Sith Lord we have been searching for. He is the reason that this whole war was started. Count Dooku was his apprentice, and they were working both sides. He remained his apprentice until he was killed. After that, he found a new apprentice…” his voice trailed off.

Fear and horror filled Padme’s face.

Obi-Wan looked her in the eyes and finished, “He found a new apprentice, Padme. Anakin has turned to the Dark Side. He is now a Sith Lord himself, called Darth Vader. I know it is difficult to hear this, but believe me when I tell you it’s true. I saw security footage from the Temple…”

“The Temple. I asked Anakin what had happened there, and he didn’t give me a straight answer. Please, Obi-Wan, I need to know what happened.”

For the first time since she had know him, in fact not since the death of his master Qui-Gon, Padme saw sadness come over Obi-Wan’s face.

He sat there for a moment, stroking his beard, visibly not wanting to tell her the whole story. He let out a small sigh and looked her in the eyes.

“The Temple was attacked by an army of Clones, and Anakin was leading the attack. They cut down all the Jedi that were in there.” He could barley get out the next few words, “I watched the security recordings, as Anakin killed Masters… Padawans,” his heart was wrenching as he finished his sentence, “and younglings.”

At that last word, Padme shot up from the couch, looking the Jedi Master directly in the eyes, her own tears coming back yet again.

“No! It’s not true! Not my Ani! He could never do such a thing.”

Slowly, he stood up. “I know what I saw, Padme. You are correct, though. Anakin Skywalker, my friend, my apprentice, your husband, could not do this. He turned to the Dark Side and let this Lord Vader consume him. He is no longer the man that we have both known and loved.”

She turned to face Obi-Wan, trembling, and starting to cry, “How… when did you know?”

He walked a few steps closer, and in a gentle voice said, “I wasn’t sure until a few minutes ago.” Sympathy and compassion filled his voice. He looked at her belly, clearly showing that she was pregnant.

“Is he the father of your baby?”

She couldn’t hold Obi-Wan's gaze. She looked at her belly and rubbed it. “Yes,” she answered, almost half ashamed, “I didn’t mean for this to happen, Obi-Wan. I didn’t mean to take Anakin away from being a Jedi.”

He reached out, put his hand on her chin, and gently lifted her head to face him. “You did not do this, Padme. Anakin chose to walk the path that he did. Do not blame yourself for what he has done.”

As she looked into his eyes, she knew that he was speaking the truth.

“What will happen to me and the baby?”

He brought his hand back down and folded his arms. This was not something he had been prepared to deal with. He closed his eyes for a moment, hoping that the Force would guide him.

“If the Emperor found out that you were carrying the child of his apprentice, there’s no telling what he might do. You are in danger if you stay here, Padme. You need to leave Coruscant. Quickly.”

“I could go back to Naboo,” she offered

“No, if they were to go looking for you, that would surely be one of the first places they would check.”

“I could possibly go to…”

He interrupted her, “I don’t want to know where you are going Padme. The less people that know, the better.”

“Yes, I guess that would be best.” She seemed fragile now, a person unsure of where to go, but she knew what needed to be done.

“I need to ask one more thing from you Padme.”

“What is it?”

“Did Anakin say where he was going, when he came here?”

She gave him a curious look. “Why?”

“Please, I need to find him. I need to stop this before it’s too late.”

Then she realized what he was talking about.

“You mean, stop him. You want to find him, so you can kill him, don’t you?”

“Please, Padme,” he paused, “he has become a great threat.”

Knowing that Obi-Wan to be right was one thing. Having to face the fact that the man she had come to love, the one that seemed to always be there when she needed him, had done such horrible things… She was not sure if she could take it all in, or even that she wanted to believe it.

“He said that he was going to end this war. He said that the Chancellor was sending him to Mustafar, to deal with the Separatist leaders,” she finally answered, knowing that she was betraying her husband.

Obi-Wan seemed to have a sense of relief, and yet at the same time of even greater agony than her own.

“Thank you Padme.”

He started to head towards the balcony. Before he could get out of the room, though, Padme turned towards Obi-Wan.

“Please Obi-Wan, don’t kill him. There is still good in him, I know it.”

Stopping in his tracks and not looking back at her, he said “I will only do what must be done, nothing more.” He walked to the edge, jumped into his speeder and headed towards an awaiting Jedi fighter.

Padme stood in the area facing the city for a few moments, fighting back the tears.

‘I have cried enough for one day,’ she thought to herself. She then summoned C3-PO.

“Pack some bags, Threepio. We are going to be leaving soon.”

“Beg your pardon, but might I ask why?” was the reply from the golden droid.

“We are going to see an old friend, and I want to leave within the hour.”

As she finished giving Threepio his task, she turned to another of her assistants, “I need you to make a secure call for me…”

Thanks for the PM happy

Anakin is foolishly delusional if he thinks Palpy will allow him to live happily with Padme.

“We are going to see an old friend, and I want to leave within the hour.”

Hope Padme isn't going to see "old friend" Palpy thinking worried

Glad you are enjoying the story so far.

Remember, Anakin has 'new found' powers. He can just take what he wants. wink

As for the old friend... well, you will see who that is soon enough.
