Title: Legacy of the Sith
Author: CloneCaptainRex(Story), AzureAngel2(Original Paintings)
Genre: Drama, Action, Epic (Not AU)
Timeframe: Clone Wars
Characters: Anakin, Obi-Wan, Captain Rex, Count Dooku, Rahm Kota, OCs and a certain Sith Lord from long ago…
Episode I:
Contention of the Sith
It is a period of civil war.
the Galactic Republic remains
locked in a seemingly never-ending
conflict with the separatist alliance
led by the evil Sith Lords and their
auxiliaries. It is in this time of unrest
that the Jedi are looked upon as
heroes. The Order knows that they
cannot remain in the favourable
spotlight forever, and so seize any
opportunity they see to preserve
their agreeable image.
The troubled young Knight ANAKIN
SKYWALKER is considered the super
star of the order by the populace,
with all eyes on him. He only feels
that this is a burden that he must
shed as he wrestles with the dark
Dragon that plagues his thoughts,
unbeknownst to his compatriots.
While on a recon mission in the outer
rim, a Jedi Master has gone missing. In
these times of trouble, the Jedi
must strive to preserve as many of
their order as they can. And so, an
emergency session of the Jedi Council
is called to create a rescue plan…
-Chapter One-
One Of These Days
“This is the end for you, my master!” The tone of Anakin Skywalker’s voice seemed as frigid as the ice plains of Hoth to Obi-Wan Kenobi as the Jedi Knight used the force to yank his silver blade hilt from his belt.
“Oh, I don’t think so.” Calm and collected, the Jedi Master pulled back his cloak and freed his sword arm, readying himself for the inevitable.
“The Force
is
with me.” Anakin assured the Jedi Master as he took up a ready stance; dominant foot forward, weight on his back leg, unlit sword in front.
“Oh, I have no doubt of it; however,
I
am the one in control here.” Kenobi raised his saber hilt to shoulder height with his left arm out pointing at his opponent. Blue flame flew parallel with his shoulders. The two sword masters were now cast in blue shadow.
Anakin switched his saber to its most lethal setting and spun it in an arc as he activated it. He flew at Obi-Wan’s outstretched sword arm.
Disarm your opponent and there isn’t much of a fight left,
he reasoned. Kenobi parried across his left shoulder, brought his blue flame over his head, around to his right, and proceeded to strike at Skywalker’s unguarded left flank.
The apprentice leaped up and out of reach of the Master’s blade, and threw his saber at Obi-Wan before he slammed into the ground and rolled.
“Well, well,” Obi-Wan seemed amused as he caught the sword from the air. “I see you are still unable to hold on to your lightsaber.”
Anakin was taken aback when Obi-Wan came at him with both blades spinning towards his face in blur of impossible speed. With a burst of force energy, he tossed Obi-Wan back against the wall.
“Now, that’s better,” said Obi-Wan to no one in particular. When he looked up, Anakin was already running at him, unarmed, his saber on an intercept course with his open hand.
Skywalker had timed it perfectly.
As he brought his empty hands down on Obi-Wan’s head, his saber flew into his waiting hands as he struck. Obi-Wan barely managed to dive and avoid being cleaved in two, though his belt was not as lucky and was burned through by the energy blade; food capsules and other contents scattering all across the permacrete floor.
Obi-Wan came around, blade whirling and spitting cobalt sparks as it flew, seemingly of its own will, its intent clear: to send Anakin to a bitter and burning death. The clash of lightsabers lit up the otherwise empty and hall. Obi-Wan struggled to hold his own against Anakin’s cybernetic arm and its superhuman strength bearing down on him. He did the only thing he could.
He dropped it.
As his saber tumbled to ground, he rolled to one side just as Anakin’s saber burned into the duracrete behind him. And while Anakin was busy freeing his blue blade from the embrace of the wall, Kenobi assumed a ready posture.
“Now look who’s losing his lightsaber,” the Knight said with a sneer as he came at Obi-Wan. They fought hard, each knowing his opponent’s weaknesses, each exploiting them. Both calling on the Force to keep them going. Two equally matched opponents locked in a seemingly never-ending lethal dance of hate and flame.
Through it all, Obi-Wan kept his composure; his serenity ruled his mind.
Sabers locked, Anakin spoke first. “You look tired, why don’t you give up?”
Perspiring in copious quantities, Obi-Wan replied. “Dun Möch does not become you, my old padawan.”
“And it does you?”
“Well, of course, I’ve always been adapt at Sith techniques,” Kenobi replied with as much sarcasm as he could muster.
Anakin used the distraction to spin his blade under Obi-Wan’s and fling into the air where he quickly pulled it to himself using the Force. Caught off guard, the Jedi Master fell, rather indignantly, on his rear. Twin sabers pointed at his former Master’s neck, Anakin sneered, “I wish you had the time to impart your wisdom upon me,
Master
.”
Anakin swung the lethal flames in an arc meant to neatly remove Obi-Wan’s head from his shoulders.
He missed.
Obi-Wan had ducked out of the way, and quickly used his boot heel to trip up Anakin, so he too, was now sitting on his rear.
“I do believe that makes another tie,” Obi-Wan said as he stood up. “Good thing, too, since I have a council meeting to get too.”
“I’ll beat you, my old master, I will,” Anakin said, with a friendly grin, all anger from his voice had disappeared.
“One of these days, Anakin, one of these days.”
Later that day, Anakin was waiting as patiently as he could outside the Jedi High Council chambers for his friend. Obi-Wan soon emerged looking grim. “We have much to discuss,” he said.
“Looks like the council’s stuffiness is rubbing off on you, Obi-Wan,” Anakin said with a grin.
“Over my pale corpse, Anakin. Council meetings aren’t what you might expect; Yoda usually orders in biscuits for all of us.”
Anakin smiled politely at Obi-Wan’s pathetic attempt at humour. Most of the time, he was better at it. Something must be bothering him. Anakin moved out of the way as the High Council Members shuffled past in their solemn way.
A voice spoke from the doorway. “Very good is it, to see you alive, Knight Skywalker,” said Yoda, standing with Mace Windu, whose face was hidden by his hood.
“Master Yoda. Master Windu.” Anakin bowed low.
Mace Windu gave him a curt nod. “Skywalker, where is your lightsaber?”
Hmm?
Anakin could have sworn he had it with him, but when he looked, his weapon was absent from his belt.
“I-I must have left in the training room, Master.” Anakin felt his cheeks redden.
“Hrmm, always aware of your surroundings, you must be, young one, always here your concentration must be, yes, yes.”
When Anakin looked to Obi-Wan for support, the Jedi Master was stifling a snicker. This was nothing new to him; Anakin had been losing his Jedi weapon ever since he’d finished putting it together.
“Your saber is-“
“-your life, yes, Master,” Anakin said, adding a roll of his eyes. This gained him several raised brows from the council members standing near. “Uh, I should, uh, I’m going to go find my lightsaber, excuse me, Masters…” Blushing even more, Anakin bowed hastily, and then took off down the hall towards the elevator.
“The boy has no patience.” Yoda said, eyes narrowing.
Obi-Wan spoke up in Anakin's defense. “He will learn patience.”
Mace Windu spoke in his rough baritone. “Skywalker is reckless.”
“So was I, if you’ll remember,” Obi-Wan countered.
“If heeded my advice, he had, know where his weapon is, he would,” Yoda mused as he held up Anakin’s unique blade hilt.
Mace Windu nodded.
Obi-Wan smiled, he had fond memories of Yoda’s lighter side. The old Master had had more than a few chuckles at Obi-Wan’s expense when he was younger, and even still now Yoda would spring some attempt at humour on him.
“He has his own shortcomings, as do we all, Master,” The bearded Jedi said as he took Anakin’s saber from Yoda’s open hand and started down the hall after Anakin.
“He’s reckless, too, you know,” Mace growled, frowning at Obi-Wan.
Yoda shrugged his remark off and hobbled off toward the gardens, snickering at some private joke all the way.
Mace was about to head to the kitchen when he noticed his lightsaber was missing.
“Lesson learned, master.” Anakin spoke through an embarrassed smile as Obi-Wan handed him his lightsaber.
“I do hope so, my friend.” Obi-Wan rested his hand on Anakin’s shoulder.
The quarters Anakin had shared with Obi-Wan for many years were spacious and empty, save for bedding and Anakin’s trinkets. When Anakin had moved out after passing the trials, he had inherited a room that, though small, had met his needs. Now that he had had a padawan thrust upon him, there was barely enough room for the two of them to stand without rubbing elbows between the two beds.
“You really should put in a request for a bigger room,” Obi-Wan muttered, looking around at Anakin’s various niknaks from all over the galaxy. Even though Jedi were forbidden possessions, Anakin always found a way to sneak some little memento back from one of his adventures, and Obi-Wan always looked the other way. “Or at least clear out some of this… junk.”
Anakin looked pained. “Yoda says that it builds Jedi discipline being cramped like this. And I love these little things. Now, you wanted to talk to me.” It wasn’t a question.
“Oh yes,” Obi-Wan said, as if he was coming out of a daze. “It seems there are reports of a recurring separatist presence near Ziost.”
“Ziost? What could they want there? It’s a extinct world. There is no political advantage in occupying it, it’s even devoid of any real natural resources useful to either side. That’s why it is uninhabited,” said Anakin, stating the plainly obvious.
“That’s why we’re going. Apparently, strong electromagnetic readings are becoming more and more prevalent. Quite unusual for an empty planet, wouldn’t you say?”
“So, they could be building something; something huge.”
“Or terraforming the world. Whatever they’re up to, we need to at least check it out. Although, it could just be another wild Bantha chase.”
“You always say that, and it never is. Quit worrying.”
“A Jedi Master has already been dispatched, but we’ve been unable to stay in regular communications. That’s not a good sign we’ll be gleaning any information any time soon.”
“So, he’s been captured. Sounds good, we’ll storm into the system, outnumbered, and crash their party, rescue the General, and escape with our necks still intact, is that it?” Anakin said, pretending to appear bamboozled.
Obi-Wan considered. “It’s a perfect plan, isn’t it? Almost as good as one of yours, in fact.” Anakin dismissed this with a wave of his hand. “Nah, my plans aren’t planned at all, I make ‘em up as I go. When do we leave?”
“Today, 1400 hours.”
Anakin looked up. “What? You said we’d have at least two more days on leave!” The younger Jedi struggled not to begin whining.
“I’m sorry, Anakin, it’s out of my control,” Obi-Wan shrugged as he made for the door.
Anakin shuffled his foot on the floor. “I’m sorry, too.”
As Obi-Wan exited through the doorway, Anakin punched in Padme’s number.
Astromech droids tootled and beeped and barked, tending to the many ships in the hangar bays, rolling along like a group of children at playtime, doing what they enjoyed most. Anakin smiled, he shared the droid’s passion for mechanical wonders and enjoyed tinkering with them as much they did.
He shuffled up to where his squadron’s ships always docked. It was the nearest docking zone to the west landing platforms. Anakin was among the most eager flyboys in the order, always ready to fly into battle, and always first.
He had time to kill before they left, and there was that refurbished pleathersteel lumbar seat back support add-on he had swapped with Kit Fisto for some droid motivators for R6 that needed installing. Nothing else had come up, and a bit of preparations couldn’t hurt.
It was to be expected that Artoo would be working on Anakin’s trademark blazing yellow ship, but to Anakin’s surprise, and amusement, even, Obi-Wan was in the droids’ usual place, and Artoo was poking at him, obviously upset at being replaced.
“No, Artoo, I don’t need any of your ‘help’. I’m fine without machines doing my job for me.”
Artoo responded with a beep.
“Oh come off it, I’m far more qualified to do this sort of thing than a multipurpose droid such as yourself!”
Artoo whined a sad murmur.
“Well, at least I’m sentient...” Obi-Wan muttered as he turned back to his task. “…and I know what I’m doing…” Artoo let loose as close to an offended scream that a droid can produce and rolled closer to Obi-Wan. The droid inched up to the Jedi Master, and, to Anakin’s amusement, sent a blast of electricity into Obi-Wan’s rear.
A cry of exclaim flew form Obi-Wan’s mouth, as he tried and failed to swat at the little droid. Artoo rolled up and behind Anakin to escape the bullying.
“Now children, can’t we all get along?” Anakin grinned as he approached his old master.
“Anakin, it is my firm belief that this allowing this droid to accompany us may well endanger the mission!”
Upon ‘hearing’ this, Artoo reached out and zapped at Obi-Wan once more. The Jedi turned the attack back upon the droid this time, nearly short-circuiting him.
“Now you’ve hurt him!” Anakin cried out somewhat sarcastically, though Obi-Wan sensed some truth in his words. Anakin was overly fond of the droid. “‘It,’ Anakin, ‘it,’ not ‘him’”
Before Anakin could summon a suitable retort, a familiar voice sounded from the rear entrance. “Anakin!”
That seat support was going to have to wait.
“Padme!” Anakin smiled as they embraced; he only broke away when he sensed Obi-Wan’s gaze upon the pair of them, tangled together like a duo of children in a schoolyard game.
Amidala blushed as Obi-Wan was finally granted the opportunity to show himself. He bowed low, his greased and dirty tunic and face hardly representative of a Jedi Master of his stature.
Padme threw all appropriate customary fashions out the window and leaped on Obi-Wan, hugging him more violently than she had Anakin, who was watching with much amusement.
“So good to see you again, Obi-Wan. Congratulations on your appointment to the council!”
“Thank you, M’la-er, Padme. I am humbled to serve the Senate in any way possible.”
Anakin rolled his eyes for what felt like fiftieth time that day. “What Obi-Wan means is that being on the Council is awesome. Right, Obi-Wan?”
“I suppose you could put it in a crude way like that, yes.”
Padme cut in with something to lighten the mood, “Chancellor Palpatine sends his regards.”
Anakin smiled, “Thank him for me, will you? He’s under a lot of pressure these days.”
Obi-Wan said nothing, but only frowned. He could sense the tenseness approaching. “Ahem, well, if you’ll excuse me, I have to-to you know… Come along, Artoo.” The older Jedi moved on somewhat to give the two of them some space.
Anakin was glad for some breathing room with Padme. “Why, Anakin, why now? Why does it have to be now? You just got back!”
“I don’t make the rules, Padme.”
She smiled at his pitiful attempt at humour. “I’d be worried if you did. Will you be back soon?”
“Sure, Padme.”
“Anakin, Jedi don’t lie," she scolded him.
“I don’t like it either, Padme. And neither does Obi-Wan.”
“That doesn’t make me feel better, Ani.”
“Then what would?” quizzed Anakin, knowing the answer already.
“Mmm… this.” Padme replied, leaning in for a kiss. Anakin was imagining being somewhere much more pleasant with his wife.
“I’m sorry to interrupt this… in-depth conversation, but you might want to be presentable,” Obi-Wan coughed.
Anakin and Padme nearly jumped. Anakin followed Obi-Wan’s pointing finger to Yoda and Mace entering the docking bay. “Thanks for the heads up,” he grinned sheepishly. Obi-Wan gave them some distance, though not enough. Obi-Wan all but knew about his relationship with Padme. Through all the outward show of a completely sensible Jedi Master who knew nothing of any troubles, Obi-Wan had his own secrets. The two of them had an understanding.
Mace Windu seriously disliked outsiders in the Jedi Temple. In fact, he loathed them. Not hate, mind it, since that would be contrary to the code, but loathing was permitted. Even if it wasn’t, Mace was the Grand Master, his word was practically law. The offending outsider this time was a regular.
Amidala seemed to think that the Temple was her personal playground, what with popping up here and there whenever she pleased. Even Palpatine was nice enough to call first and ask if he could “pay a visit”. Not that the Jedi had any choice in the matter. Palpatine just barged in whenever he felt he had a free afternoon, usually to disturb Skywalker, but at least he said he was coming.
Mace also seriously disliked patronizing. It was better left to Palpatine; after all, that was his job.
Out of all the things wrong with Anakin, he was right about one thing; negotiations were best accomplished with a lightsaber. And now he was forced remove himself from his lunch to patronize with Amidala. All in all, it was extremely aggravating. Thankfully, Yoda was there, too.
Mace took another bite out of his sandwich as they walked up to the trio. He didn’t feel like being polite today.
"Wonderful it is too see you once again in our hallowed halls, Senator."
Mace involuntarily gagged silently at Yoda’s posturing, which would have been fine if he didn’t have a piece of Nerf sandwich in his throat at the time. “Yes- wonderful… senator…” he managed to gasp out between violent coughs. Mace was glad for the distraction when another Jedi dressed fully in black approached the group. He excused himself to fish the food out of his trachea, but still watched the scene from afar.
Skywalker did a double take when he saw who the Jedi was. He sprinted over to her.
Mace made a mental note to chastise him for that later. Not running in the Temple was the second lesson Apprentices learned after being accepted into the Temple(after why not to point your saber at your face). He should know by now.
Anakin embraced the Jedi.
Mace noted a look of disdain from the Senator’s direction, or maybe envy?” Curious, either way.
Anakin spoke up, “This is Nyla, she used to train with me back in the day.”
“Padawan Zyne, it is a pleasure to see you once again.” Obi-wan bowed.
“And you, too, Master ‘Obi.” She turned to Padme, “We were practicing buddies in the Padawan tourneys,” This seemed to satisfy Amidala.
“Oh, how wonderful! So, you’re both Knights now?”
Nyla smiled politely. “Ah, ha-ha, no, I'm still a Padawan. My Master is the missing Jedi we’ll be rescuing.”
“Oh how terrible. Where is he, do you know?”
Mace was stunned at the overall lack of discipline on display here. Classified information was being tossed around like garbage. “There is no cause for concern, Senator, I'm sure the Chancellor will fill you in as need be. In the meantime, are your preparations complete?”
Obi-Wan piped up, “Yes, Master, pre-flight checks are all positive. A green light all around, according to Anakin’s droid.”
Yoda seemed to wake up from his silence, “Good, nearly time it is for your departure. Time for catching up, later it will be.”
Most of the group took this as a large hint and walked on. Anakin moved closer to Padme. “Padme, I'm so sorry about this I-“
“Don’t. Ani, we both have duties to do. Now go and do yours, my Hero.”
“I love you.”
Padme just squeezed Anakin’s hand tighter as he walked to his fighter.
“I’ve got a bad feeling about this already.”
Obi-Wan smirked, “I seem to remember you saying not to worry.”
“I dunno, I've just got this nagging feeling that one of us will end up dead.”
Nyla spoke up as she climbed into her ship, “Be strong, Ani.”
Anakin shot her a playful look. “Shut up, you. I wasn’t the one who couldn’t beat the Bear Clan in a practice session.”
Nyla snapped back. “Hey! It was the whole group of them!”
Anakin shook his finger at her from across the hangar. “They were how many years younger than us? Twelve? Shame on you.” He grinned as Yoda gave Anakin a friendly tap with his cane.
“May the Force be with all of you.”
“And you, Master,” said Obi-Wan, priming his engines and closing the cockpit.
Mace got the last word in. “Obi-Wan will debrief all of you when you reach your destination. May the Force be with us all.”
Anakin glanced at Padme one last time before locking his hatch and hitting the thrusters. Loud booming crashes accompanied the trio of Starfighters as they broke through the sound barrier in sequence, beginning with Anakin, who ignored all Coruscant speeding regulations.
Mace imagined Obi-Wan shacking his head in a helpless, but frustrated gesture. Anakin would end up killing someone doing that someday, he just knew it.
“Do you think they’re up to the task?” Mace crossed his arms as his cloak billowed wildly around him.
“Better be ready, they had. A final test for young Skywalker, this will.” Yoda hobbled towards the command bridge that controlled the various ships coming in and out of the Temple hangars.
“And Obi-Wan is the best negotiator in the Order, with the exception of you, Yoda.”
“Have to be, he will, for this mission, but worried about Obi-Wan, you are not.” Mace’s only reply was to nod moodily.
“Worried about your friend, are you, Master Windu? Rescue him, the team will.” Mace stopped himself from breaking into a smile. “Your reassurance is appreciated, Master. If only Skywalker could have received similar treatment this afternoon? He seems on edge.” Mace quizzed Yoda. He took considerable time musing upon Mace’s query.
Yoda leaned on his Gimer, his ancient eyes squinting in the afternoon sunlight. “If young Anakin wishes not to be guided, guide him, we will not. Find his own way, he must.” Mace swallowed, as if the weight of his pending words were too heavy for his throat. “And if he chooses the wrong path?”
“Find his own way, Skywalker must. Faith in him, we must have, if the Chosen One, he is.”
“And if he isn’t?”
“Then still, faith in him, we must have.”

This is fantastic. Reading the way you use so many iconic characters makes me wish George Lucas had taken inspiration from you instead of the other way around! I might have found the prequel series tolerable if that were the case!
I am going back to reread this, just because it's fun.
Great work.

Huh, what?
I'm here.
What can I say, I don't take fanfic paddies.

I am very curious how your cooperation with
azure
works out. I love both, your writing and her pictures. Should be a blast.
“Find his own way, Skywalker must. Faith in him, we must have, if the Chosen One, he is.”
“And if he isn’t?”
“Then still, faith in him, we must have.”
Now this is Yoda like I always wanted him to be - wise.

I told you that I'd read it eventually.
Good job Rexi (and wonderful pictures as usual, Azure!
). Rex, could you write my duels? I have such a hard time with my fights.
And I love how you gave Yoda a humorous side.
I do hope that you are going to include CC Rex and the 501st in this.
Could you put me on the PM list?
