This is the sequel to
A Desperate Hope
. You do not need to read that to follow this story. Like the movies, they stand alone
The first post is the Prologue and just sets the stage for the story to follow. I will up updating every two weeks, however, if you’d like a PM, please let me know.
Prologue
Luke wearily sank into a thick patch of dewy grass, sweat pouring down his body. The day’s training had been long, leaving him mentally and physically exhausted. Ben had praised him for doing well, clearly impressed with his progress while Yoda merely gave a nod of his head before adding, “much to learn you still have.”
He smiled, noting how much that comment would have bothered him in the past but in the two years since first meeting Ben and the destruction of the Death Star, he’d grown, matured and learned to keep his emotions in check. Even when he didn’t understand or agree with the decisions Ben and Yoda made, he trusted them completely and complied with everything they asked of him.
He sighed, gazing across the dense forest. The hardest thing for him to deal with had been the separation from Leia, Han and the rest of the Rebel Alliance. Yoda insisted the three of them be secluded from any and all distractions, something he’d fought against until Ben took him aside and explained the necessity of him focusing all his thoughts and energy on learning to use the Force. He hadn’t been convinced until Yoda agreed they could remain on Yavin IV, traveling to the opposite, uninhabited side of the planet to begin his lessons.
It helped that he was allowed to visit with his friends once a month when the trio made their way to the base for supplies. He still felt pangs of envy when he talked to the pilots and learned of their adventures. How he wanted to be out there with them, striking blow after blow against the Empire until it was defeated.
But his place was here, at least for now. Ben and Yoda both assured him he had a very important role to play in defeating the Empire, but refused to go into any details, however, Luke knew deep in his soul, his destiny would be to one day face and defeat Vader.
The thought chilled him but made him more determined to learn everything he could from Ben and Yoda.
He also knew his life and the lives of those he cared the most for depended on it.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Leia stood in the shadows of the hanger bay, her eyes following the Millennium Falcon as it taxied to the far corner, Han’s favorite spot to store his beloved ship. Part of her still marveled each time he returned to the base or that he’d agreed to have any part of the Alliance for that matter.
She’d been convinced when he left two years ago to repay Jabba the Hutt the money he owed, she would never see him again. She was even crabby and down right rude for days afterwards, though she was sure that had more to do with Luke, Ben and Yoda leaving than Han deserting them in their hour of need.
When he came back, she’d been too stunned to do anything more than congratulate him on finding his way back before turning on her heel and stalking to her chambers. She’d ignored the fluttering of her heart and wave of pleasure that had washed over her, telling herself that was probably a normal reaction to being shocked.
“Miss me?”
Han’s cocky voice jerked Leia back to reality.
‘Stang it!’
She’d hoped to slip away before he noticed her.
“Of course not,” she bristled. “I just happened to -,”
“Be waiting with baited breath for my return,” Han finished with a smug grin.
“I was waiting to see if today would be the day that bucket of bolts you call a ship fell apart before you careened it into the corner and out of harm’s way,” she corrected through clenched teeth.
“Yeah?” Han frowned. “Well I landed five minutes ago. What are you doing still standing here that’s all you were worried about?”
“I’m waiting to say hello to Chewbacca,” she countered before squaring her shoulders and strolling past him.
Han watched Leia stop in front of the Wookie long enough to say hello before continuing her journey from the hanger bay. He didn’t buy her excuse for a minute, not that it mattered much. While he was flattered by her obvious interest, she was the single most infuriating woman he’d ever met and there was no way in the nine Corellian hells anything could ever happen between them.
But he certainly enjoyed teasing her. After all, that was the only reason he’d joined up with the Rebels in the first place.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Darth Vader stood on the bridge of his star destroyer, his hands clasped behind his back, gazing at the skeleton of the new Death Star under construction. His jaw clenched with frustration as he pondered the last two years of his exile, an exile only granted after a furious Sidious turned his rage over the loss of the Death Star and Princess Leia on Vader.
Not that he had anyone else to take it out on. No one had survived the destruction of the Emperor’s prized weapon, and Vader had personally taken care of the entire guard detail that allowed the Princess and her rebel friends to slip through their fingers. That Obi-Wan Kenobi was on Endor and also managed to escape went unmentioned.
Just as his Master didn’t share every detail with him, Vader didn’t share every detail with Sidious. Treachery was common among the Sith, though Vader hadn’t partaken of the tradition until he listened to the recordings from the few Tie fighters that made it back to Coruscant and heard a most familiar voice.
“Around the trench provide support.”
Not that he was surprised Sidious wasn’t able to defeat the little troll. Yoda hadn’t lived for as long as he had by not having a few tricks up his puny little sleeve. What enraged him was not being informed of his survival after the duel with Sidious after Order 66. He would have hunted the bantha down and gotten rid of him years ago if he’d only known.
And as if that wasn’t bad enough, he was stuck in the Outer Rim supervising construction of another weapon instead of focusing on finding and eliminating the two most power Jedi in the history of the Order.
His Master insisted they would be dealt with in due time, giving little to no thought of the damage the two were doing in the meantime. Sidious was convinced they, like the Rebel Alliance, were of little to no consequence and they would finally be rid of the two once the new Death Star was completed.
Vader didn’t agree. The disturbance in the Force he’d started to feel two years ago was growing stronger everyday and he knew it wasn’t just because of Kenobi and Yoda. There was something more…something elusive…something he would have to deal with, whether his Master liked it or not.

Ooh, the sequel's up!!
Excellent job!! I can imagine it would be hard for Luke only getting to see his friends once a month.
And the Han/Leia banter was spot on for this timeframe.
Too cute.
Please keep me on that pm list!
Looking forward to more!

Ooh great start. I love the idea of Luke's in-depth training at this stage; he seems to be more grounded and less impulsive.

Great beginning

Interesting to see the two different teaching styles of Yoda and Obi-Wan combined. I'd want to see Chewie, too.
Uh Oh.....did Vader sense Luke (disturbance in the Force)?

And yes, Vader did sense Luke.

Chapter 1
Leia slipped into the large conference room just before the briefing was about to begin. Ignoring Mon Mothma’s surprised look, she quickly scanned the occupants until she found him, sitting in the corner next to Chewbacca.
Han met her gaze, flashed his infamous cocky grin and winked salaciously.
Leia’s cheeks burned with embarrassment. How was it Han always knew when she was looking at him? It wasn’t like she seeking his presence for her pleasure or anything. She was only trying to make sure he wasn’t late for the meeting.
“Good Morning,” Mon Mothma began in her usual somber tone. “We have just received information regarding the Emperor’s new cloning facility including It’s exact location.”
The room erupted in excitement.
Mon Mothma held up her hands, urging silence. “Many Bothans died to bring us this information,” she added sadly. “And more have been captured by the Empire. Let us not forget about them.” She paused, lowering her eyes for a moment of silence.
“General Madine.” Mon Mothma stepped aside to allow the young man room to address the crowd.
“We have a group of volunteers who will be responsible for setting the explosives to destroy the new facility,” he announced, nodding towards the group in the center of the room. “And Princess Leia will be in charge of the operation and she would like a couple more -,”
“Sign me up.”
Leia’s eyes widened in shock as Han rose to his feet.
Chewbacca immediately began grunt indignantly.
“It’s a dangerous assignment, pal,” Han whispered, casting him an apologetic look. “I didn’t want to speak for you.”
Chewbacca smacked him lightly on the arm, growling in a low tone.
“I’m guessing that makes two,” Madine quipped, turning to face Leia. “Looks like you have your crew.”
Leia was too stunned to move.
‘What did Solo think he was doing?’
“Good. I’ll leave you to coordinate the specifics with your team.” Madine faced the room. “Dismissed.”
Leia stood rooted to the spot as Han swaggered over to her. “Well your highnessness, looks like we’ll be working together again.”
“The name is Leia,” she snapped, squaring her shoulders. “And I don’t know what you think you are doing but you’d better remember,
I’m
the one in charge of this mission.”
“What do you mean?” Han asked incredulously. “I’m just doing my part to help the Rebellion like everyone else.”
Leia’s eyes narrowed. “Then have a seat, Captain,” she said, not bothering to hide her disbelief. “
My
briefing starts in a few minutes.”
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
“This had better be worth my time, Corporal” Vader warned as he reached the detention level aboard
The Executer
. His mood had not improved much since the Emperor ordered him to Wayland to deal with the Bothan traitors. Had he been in charge of setting up the new cloning facility instead stuck in the Outer Rim, he would have discovered the spies before any damage was down.
Now he was stuck cleaning up another mess, a task he despised.
“Ye…yes, sir,” Cric Sathel swallowed the lump that suddenly appeared in his throat. “During our interrogation, the prisoner mentioned two keywords I was informed to be on the watch for and inform you immediately.”
“What words were those?” Vader asked, his interest peaked.
“Tatooine and Skywalker.”
The blood in Vader’s veins turned to ice. “What exactly did he say?”
Beads of sweat appeared on Sathel’s forehead. “It was regarding a fellow Rebel,” he began. “He said the boy’s name was Skywalker and he came from Tatooine.”
“Boy?” Vader breathed.
“We…well sir, the prisoner stated he was a young man, barely over twenty standard years.”
‘It couldn’t be.’
“What is his full name?”
“Caalan Hu’lya of the Ayla clan -,”
“Not the prisoner,” Vader hissed. “Skywalker.”
“Luke Skywalker, my Lord.”
Without another word, Vader turned on his heel and stalked away, his black cape billowing behind him.
‘He lied.’
Rage at his Master’s betrayal threatened to choke him. He knew, of course, Sidious didn’t tell him everything nor was he always honest with the information he shared but Vader never expected this level of betrayal. Sidious knew better than anyone what Padmé meant to him and he still lied and then sat back and watched him suffer for years.
‘Probably with pleasure,’
Vader thought with disgust. He paused mid-step as a sudden realization struck him. If Padmé lived to give birth to his child, where was she now?
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
“Master, may I have a work with you?”
Yoda set the datapad he had been reading aside and waved Luke to the chair next to his.
Luke smiled weakly and quickly crossed the room.
“A bad dream you have had,” Yoda observed softly.
“More strange than bad,” Luke corrected as he sat down. “I saw a small city with a mountain on one side and a forest on the other. People were going about their business and all of a sudden,” he paused, shaking his head. “There was screaming and I could feel….pain, but I don’t know who’s or why they were in pain.”
“Hmmm.” Yoda closed his eyes, meditating quietly on what he’d just heard.
“Tis the future you see,” he announced a few minutes later.
“The future?” Luke frowned. “Why would I be dreaming about the future? Do I know someone in that city?”
“Yes.” Yoda opened his eyes, gazing straight into Luke’s.
“The one in pain?” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
“Difficult to say,” Yoda admitted. “Always in motion is the future.”
“Shouldn’t we go help?”
Yoda inhaled deeply. “Jump into action we should not,” he replied, holding up a clawed hand to keep Luke from interrupting. “Happened nothing has yet,” he continued. “Seek the will of the Force before making any decisions we should.”
Luke bit back his disappointment. “Yes, Master.”
“See action you soon will, youngling,” Yoda added, with a knowing look. “So impatient you should not be.”
“I’m sorry, Master.” Luke hung his head. “I just…I want…it’s…-,”
“Understand I do,” Yoda said with a soft smile. “Once eager to make a difference I was too,” he paused, leaning forward. “But a very important destiny you have and jeopardize that by acting before thinking you should not.”
“I understand,” Luke sighed.
“Back to sleep you should go,” Yoda advised, patting his hand. “In the morning, meet with Obi-Wan and meditate on this matter we will.”

Glad Luke's not going off on a tear but is willing to think and wait a bit.
The Emperor's known deceitfulness will definitely undermine Vader's loyalty and fuel his schemes.
