Chapter 1: Noise Issues

It was another sunny morning at the Jedi Temple, home of the New Jedi Trials Order. Council Member Kai Koon was already active in the practice room, sparring with a pair of droids. The Kel Dor Master took up a defensive stance, ready for the droids to come at him. Today’s practice session was a chance to test the capabilities of Soresu against the aggressive Djem So and Ataru, which made for a lot of switching on the fly and quick defensive maneuvers. Spinning to dodge an attack by the first droid, Kai parried a blow by the other droid, locking his practice saber with its weapon. Keeping an eye on the other droid, which seemed to wait for him to make a move, Kai pushed the droid opposite him backwards a little using his strength; the droid did little to prevent this from happening. Taking several steps forwards, Kai swung his saber out of the deadlock and proceeded to swinging it at the droid, hitting the metal body and causing a small Beep! to emanate, meaning that he had defeated the droid. Without looking behind him, he realized that the other droid was coming for him; turning around, he gave the droid a swift kick, which sent it skittering across the floor and into the wall, where it lay in a crumpled heap. Deactivating the practice weapon, Kai rubbed his eyes a bit before walking over to the window. Opening the blinds, he was suddenly awash in sunlight, the rays warming his body up. The exercise had gotten him warmed up for the day, but he still had to do his daily routine in order for him to truly be awake and lively. Without doing his routine every morning, he didn’t feel quite there all day, and today was one of those days where he wanted to be lively. Nice days were great for taking a stroll around the gardens or a dip in the pool for some quick laps. Maybe today would be the day that he could finally best Dil Finwerk at a swimming race. Although the Nautolan Jedi Master always won each time both of them raced, Kai was getting better each time, closing the margin of defeat every race. In the future, maybe he could win a few. As he contemplated this, a figure walked up behind him. Turning, he saw that it was Malloren Bruse, the Grand Master of the Order. She was shorter than he was, with flowing brown hair and green eyes that he had come to admire. Bowing his head slightly, Kai said “I thought that I was going to be the only one up this early in the morning.”

“It was hard to sleep with you banging away at those training droids,” she commented with a slight chuckle.

“I thought that your chamber was soundproofed?” Kai asked. A few years earlier, she had gotten the floor of her room soundproofed so that she could sleep when other Jedi were sparring in the room downstairs where both of them now stood.

“You made that much noise,” she said jokingly. “Lighten up, will you? I’m just pulling your ear.” She grinned at her own sense of humor.

“I see,” Kai said plainly. “Well, I’m sorry to have wakened you. My apologies.”

“It’s a nice day,” Malloren said, standing next to Kai at the window. “Why not just go outside and practice? That’s what I’ll be doing after mealtime.”

“I’ll go out later,” Kai said. “Just had to get some practice in while everyone else was sleeping.”

“You certainly woke me up,” Malloren commented.

“That was unintentional,” Kai said back. He had not meant to wake anyone up with his sparring.

“Tomorrow’s a big day for the Order,” Malloren went on to say. She seemed very excited this morning, Kai noticed. “We’ve got a Padawan promotion later in the day. I’m sure you know who soon-to-be-Knight is?” This shocked Kai; he had forgotten completely about the event, and yet he was one of the members who had to show up! Perhaps he had gotten up too early.

“I honestly do not know,” he said. “I guess that it just slipped my mind.”

Malloren shook her head slowly. “I can’t believe that you could let something like this slip your mind. You are a Council Member, so you especially shouldn’t not know these things.” She was joking, and Kai frowned.

“Well, I didn’t mean to forget, if that’s what you’re getting at,” he said defensively. “I’ve just been . . . preoccupied, that’s all.” He didn’t want to admit that he had totally forgotten about the promotion ceremony that day. Someone had forgotten to give him a memo the day before so that he would remember. Things like that just didn’t happen to him, and it was a bit disturbing. “Work’s gotten in the way.”

“What kind of work, may I ask?” she said. “Physical exercise, or something else?”

“It’s not really important,” he snapped. “I’ve just had other things on my mind, that’s all.”

“OK, I get your point. You forgot because you’ve been busy,” she said. “I’m going for a quick stroll around the garden before our meal. See you later.” With that, she turned around and walked out of the room, leaving Kai standing there alone. He contemplated why he had forgotten such an important thing; it was not like him to do that. Shrugging it off, Kai proceeded to stare out the window once again. He could spot a couple transport ships leaving the atmosphere, and a few more ready to land at nearby ports to be offloaded, and the cargo sent to its intended destination. Kai had once tried to do that line of work while on a mission, and it did not work so well. It had been an undercover assignment, and he had been investigating a smuggling ring with a pair of other Jedi. What followed afterwards was not pretty, and Kai quickly had to shut that out of his mind because he did not want to relive the scene. Closing his eyes, he reached out to the Force to balance him so that he would not get too emotional, because he did not want to risk losing control of himself. His breathing, which had risen considerably as he remembered the scene, slowed down once again, and he breathed deeply a few times to settle his composure. Deciding that a little air would do him good, he closed the blind and walked out of the training room.

As he walked down the corridor towards the entrance to the gardens, Kai ran into Dil Finwerk, who had just come out of the ‘fresher with a towel in hand. “Master Koon,” the Nautolan said. “Fine day, isn’t it?”

“Going for a swim?” Kai said. Dil nodded. “Mind if I join you today?”

“Not at all,” Dil said in a relaxed tone. “Maybe we could even have a race today, if you want to. You’ll still lose anyways, but I wanted to bring it up in case you were thinking that you might be able to beat me for once.” There was a bit of sarcasm in his voice, and he had a spry smile on his face.

“I’ll catch up to you eventually,” Kai said back. “Just wait and see.”

“So, you know when our morning meal is ready?” Dil asked as the two of them started to walk down the corridor together. “I don’t want to miss another one due to swimming. That’s happened to me twice in the past week.” Kai liked the Jedi Master; he had a good sense of humor without going over the top on the jokes.

“No idea,” Kai said. “Now that I think about it, you’re up early as well. And here I thought that I was the only one up, except for Grand Master Bruse. She said that I woke her up with my sparring. Can you believe that?”

“Maybe,” Dil said. “You can be loud at times, so I don’t doubt that you would have wakened someone.”

“You’re a crazy guy, you know that?” Kai said.

“I pride myself in it,” Dil said as the two turned the corner. “It makes things easier to just be more carefree and relaxed. I’m pretty sure that you understand what I’m talking about.”

“Quite,” Kai commented. “Anyways, I forgot my towel in my room, so I won’t be able to go for a swim right now. Maybe later.”

“All right. Suit yourself,” Dil said as he walked away, towel over his shoulder. Kai was now all alone, and he was unsure of what to do. It would be a while before the Temple was crawling with Jedi, so he had some time to kill. He thought of going to the arcade and playing around with the chess set using the Force, but it didn’t really intrigue him. The Lounge was always open, where he could sit back and relax in one of the comfy hovering chairs and watch some HoloNet news. However, that didn’t sound very interesting either, so he decided to skip that as well. Now he really was bored; with no one up, it was a little hard to find something to do. Thus, he decided to go back to his room and sit on his bed; maybe he could play around with his datapad. Taking a breath, he began the trek back to his room. As he walked, he stared at the architecture of the Temple around him. The walls were reflected on by the light that streamed in through the archway that separated the gardens from the Temple, and he could see his shadow walking along right next to him on the wall, the shadow acting like a clone, following his every move. He studied the appearance of the figure on the wall; it had arms, it had a head, and it had a body just like he did. A perfect clone, something like that one mission . . . but that was not important. It was in the past. Shaking his head a bit to clear the thought, Kai made his way down the corridor towards his room. Once he got to the door, he slid a card through the slot, and the door opened up to allow him to enter. Crashing down on his bed, he took a deep breath and pulled a shiny new datapad towards him. Turning the gadget on, he flipped through features such as weather and news to get to the NJT’s private channel. The channel was recently established, and he had been curious about it for some time to see what would be featured. Right as the screen clicked onto the channel, a note popped up mentioning upcoming events, and it said in the popup window that there would be a padawan promotion the next day. Why me? Kai asked himself. It seems like everyone else knows but me. Rolling his eyes, he continued to play around with the datapad, exploring each section of the new channel as he awaited the morning mean, of which was supposed to be oatmeal, something that he like a lot.

Chapter 2: Padawan Problems

Sir? Wake up, sir. You need to be ready to go in one hour. Sir? Wake up! Brutus Crantilla groaned at the monotonous sound of the protocol droid standing next to his bed. If he weren’t a Council Member, he would have probably sliced the droid apart using his lightsaber and then gone back to sleep. However, the droid was right; he needed to get moving. Sitting up groggily, Brutus stumbled a bit to stand up. He was extremely tired after the previous night’s furious ping-pong tournament which had left him and the other competitors exhausted. It was surprising that the ball they were using stayed together after hundreds of repetitive whacks to its shell. The Force really was an amazing thing, even when it was manipulated to act like tape to keep something from breaking apart. Blinking several times to try and get his eyes to focus, Brutus pulled on his dark brown Jedi robes, of which he himself had made many years before as a Knight. His teacher, Master Integral, had taught him how to create his own gear from scratch in case he might need the skills some day and there were no seamstresses available to aid him. His old master had taught him a lot before he passed away two years ago, and Brutus was forever grateful for such good training.

As he walked to the door, Brutus was interrupted by the protocol droid. Sir, would you like anything while you are gone? “I’m fine,” Brutus said. “You can go for now.” The protocol droid shuffled past him as it made its way out of the room. Brutus walked out right behind it and locked the door. His room was on the top floor of dormitories, and it had an amazing view of the surrounding planet. Sunlight streamed through the high arching windows, the products of months of labor crafting the windows and then installing them. The corridor that he stood in was quiet, because only a few members of the Order had rooms up there, and all were either Council members or the Grand Master. Alexander Rendush and Master MJ were away on prolonged missions, and had not been back to the Temple in a while, leaving Brutus there on the floor along with Grand Master Bruse and Kai Koon. It was nice having a section almost to himself, because Brutus did not like having to hear Padawans running along the corridor at insane hours of the morning, shouting at the top of their lungs. He had thankfully left all that behind once he was promoted to Master, which guaranteed him a room in a small offshoot of the main dormitory hall, a section that was blocked except for Masters and above or Jedi of lower rank with express permission to enter. It was not soon after that that Brutus had been promoted to Council Member, a position that he had held for the past three years, and he had gotten the best sleep he had ever had when there was finally peace and quiet around him. It was nice to be him.

Striding down the corridor, Brutus’s footsteps echoed as his feet slapped down on the smooth tiles. He was headed to the ‘fresher to wash his face and get ready for the promotion ceremony an hour later. When he entered, he grabbed a clean white towel with the insignia of the NJT on it and walked over to a sink, which was made out of fine marble mined from Djerk, the marble mining capital of the known universe. The sink was a piece of elegant art, with a long craning faucet and a revolving head that, when rotated, could determine the flow of water used. Switching the faucet head to a low flow, Brutus stuck the towel into the water, soaking it in the clear liquid. Once the towel was wet enough, Brutus turned the faucet head in the opposite direction to cut the flow before sticking the towel on his face. The cold water had a soothing effect on his face, and Brutus felt very relaxed, so much in fact that he didn’t realize that someone was coming in behind him. The only way he figured that out was because he heard a voice behind him.

“Late riser, eh?” said the voice. Brutus snatched the towel off of his face and whirled around. Kai Koon was standing there, watching him with a slight grin.

“How’d you manage to figure that one out?” Brutus asked, a bit of sarcasm in his voice.

“I can tell,” Kai said. “You just seem tired today.”

“I hadn’t noticed,” Brutus said, turning back to the sink and proceeding to continue washing his face. “So, you ready to attend the promotion ceremony today?”

“In fact, I totally forgot about that yesterday,” Kai responded. “It seems like someone forgot to give me the memo about it.”

“Seriously? I thought that you would be the last person to forget something important like that,” Brutus said jokingly, placing the towel down on the counter next to the sink. “They call you the ‘Master of Patience’ for a reason.”

“And that’s what I find disturbing,” Kai said, musing about he situation. “It’s not like me to forget those sorts of things.”

“Just forget about it. It’s a great day!” Brutus said. “As for me, I could use a few more hours of sleep. That tourney last night killed me. I didn’t want to get up this morning, but, of course, duty calls. Funny how it always does that when it’s the least favorable time to do so.”

“I’m glad that I didn’t participate, then,” Kai said with a slight smile. Brutus smiled as well, but he was still facing away from the Kel Dor when he did so.

“I’d better get prepared, so see you later,” Brutus said. Kai nodded, and Brutus left the ‘fresher, heading back to his room to get a few things in order before the ceremony. He never particularly liked the Padawan promotion ceremonies, at least not as much as the little ceremonies that he put on for each Jedi that mastered a lightsaber form. Such celebrations like that were much more preferable because he had gone to most of the length to help these Jedi master the ways of one particular form. Participating in a promotion for a Padawan was just not the same, because he was just a figure there; he had not trained the Padawan being promoted, had not lived with them for several years, not had to teach them what to do and when to do so in order to make sure that they were successful. At least with form training, he had more control of how his students learned, and he liked how he was able to interact with each student because he was the only member of the Order to turn to for form training; instead of there being multiple form masters working on their own particular specialties, all those wishing to excel at a form came to him for instruction. Only a few had graduated from his form training, but he had felt a stronger connection with them than he had with any other Padawan except for those he had personally trained.

As he entered his room, Brutus’ jaw dropped. It looked as if a hurricane had befell his room, and he walked around slowly, dumbfounded by the sight. His bookcase had been emptied, with books all over the floor and a few maimed pages lying in their death throes, ripped forcefully out of their respective books and tossed on the floor to lay there. The bed was a mess, and the pillow was no where to be found. The closet door was hanging open, two drawers inside gutted out of their contents, which lay in front of the doors in no semblance of order. Brutus didn’t like the situation at all, and nothing added up. Then, he noticed faintly audible clicking noises coming from the back of the closet. Reaching back into the depths of the closet, he found something mechanical. Pulling the object out, he found it to be T-87, his protocol droid. The droid’s pale green paint job was scratched a bit, and a few wires hung loosely out of the outer covering of the droids’ body. Looking at him, T-87 said “Master Brutus,” in a plain tone.

“What happened here?” Brutus asked with a tone of mixed awe and force. “Why is my room all messed up?”

“It was the Padawans, sir. They can be a rambunctious lot at times. I tried to stop them, but they ripped the place up and stuck me in the back of the closet, which I can tell you is not a very nice place to be. While I was back there, I happened to find a pair of your old slippers; they were getting rather dusty, so I decided . . .”

“T-87, why were Padawans in my room? They’re not supposed to be on this floor, let alone in my room. I’ve told you that many times. How’d they get in my room in the first place?”

“They struck when I was just about to enter and tidy the place a little. They then went on to vandalize the room. I tried to stop them, sir, I really did.”

“Do you know which Padawans are responsible for this carnage?” Brutus asked coldly, pushing back on the protocol droid a little. “I need to know.”

“I believe that I do, sir. It was Serafine Tinaste, Jaden Von Klyse, and Shap Cuvert. Miss Tinaste was especially rude; she was the one who put me in the back of the closet.”

“Serafine? Fiona Tud’s Padawan? She’s the one being promoted today! Is this some idea of a graduation prank?”

“I suppose so, sir.”

“I think that I’ll have to have a few words with her before today’s ceremony if at all possible. I’m sure that Grand Master Bruse won’t like this at all. Security is supposed to be really tight on this floor.”

“Perhaps it was compromised, sir?” the protocol droid suggested, but Brutus raised a hand to cut it off.

“Not possible. There would have been an alert placed on the cams. Someone would have seen.”

“I’m afraid that no one did, sir. These Padawans are crazy.” T-87 said. Brutus released his hold on the droid, and proceeded to sit down on the bed and think about the situation. Something seemed out of place. The Force even seemed a little out of whack. There was a larger picture than it appeared, and Brutus realized that he should stay on guard. Either way, he would have a Padawan to talk to soon, so he decided to show up to the ceremony a little early to have a few words with the Grand Master before the event began.

“T, I want you to clean up this mess. Put the broken things in the garbage, and find that pillow if at all possible. Oh, and make sure that you aren’t jumped by any more Padawans while you do so.”

“Right away, sir,” said the droid in a cheerful voice. “The room will be cleaned up in a jiffy. You won’t even notice that it was disturbed.”

“OK then,” Brutus said before turning around and leaving. The door slid shut right behind him, and T-87 waited several moments to make sure that Brutus was not coming back in. Extracting a comlink from the clutter, the droid switched it on and dialed a private frequency, something that would be alien to the Temple’s security system. “Phase One of ‘Operation Overrun’ is complete, my lord,” the droid said into the microphone.

“You have done well, T-87. My plan is almost complete. Make sure that no one finds their way into our path. However, if one does, do not hesitate to eliminate the threat, even if they are unarmed. Just complete the mission.”

“Yes, sir,” the droid said coolly before shutting off the comlink. If it could, T-87 would have smiled; things were going according to plan, and Master Brutus was off on a wild goose chase in the wrong direction. The Jedi would be no match for what would come.
