Title: Time and space-A new hope.

A/U Star Wars Saga
Author: Gkilkenny
The characters: Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, Palpatine, Anakin- ANH: Luke, Leia, Han Solo
Timeframe: Just before TPM, and then on to AotC - RotS - ANH
Rating: PG

Summary: Han Solo was not the first person to be frozen in carbonite. A Jedi Padawan had that dubious honour. The Phantom Menace is only the beginning. I hope my version keeps you interested.
Note: I don’t own any of the star wars characters; I just like playing with them. Thanks to GL for inventing them.

// Bond speaking\\

~Prologue.~

“Senator Palpatine, what an unexpected pleasure, when my advisers told me that a high ranking official was coming to Bespin to inspect our newly finished Carbonite freezing facility. I had no idea that it would be someone of your standing.”

“My dear Baron Xavier, I am a man who looks to the future and when I heard that you had perfected the art of freezing items for export I had to see it for myself.”

“Thank you Senator, we’ve designed the carbon-freeze chambers to suspend Tibanna gas for safe transportation.” Xavier explained to his seemingly enthralled visitor. “As you know gas is used around the galaxy for heating and various other uses. Nevertheless, it’s volatile in its gaseous state and we’ve had many accidents exporting it. However, after much experimentation we are pleased to say that we can suspend the gas indefinitely, in these blocks of carbonite.”

“Doesn’t the gas lose some of its strength being kept frozen for so long, Baron?”

“No, we’ve designed the frame in such a way that the tiny repulser-lift projectors, as well as a power-generation system, a refrigeration system, and chemical monitoring devices control the suspended state. We have tested it and it remains a viable fuel even after several months in carbonite. We could probably freeze a variety of items and they’d still be as fresh and useful as the day they were frozen.”

“I see, so do the systems that control the devices remain active for several months?”

“Yes Senator, actually, they have a lifetime battery installed in them, of course the battery would never have to work that long as we don’t freeze anything for a lifetime.”

“No I suppose not - tell me Baron - could you freeze – oh lets say a live animal and then bring it back to life?”

“I suppose there’s always that possibility in the future Senator, but it’s probably not something we’d endorse.”

“Yes, yes, of course not Baron. It isn’t something that – I- as a Senator would even consider doing. Nevertheless, before I return to Coruscant I would like to look around your gas-mining facility and perhaps you can show me the drawings and how you designed it?”

“It would be my honour to show you Senator. Come this way and I’ll arrange a demonstration and show you the plans.”

Palpatine smiled to himself as Baron Xavier led the way down the hall. He intended to acquire a set of the plans to build this device for his own use and if the fool Xavier objected to his taking a copy, it would be his last objection. He listened to the babbling idiot rave on about his product and the plans he had for improving his facility, however, Palpatine had little interest in doing anything for Bespin. This planet wasn’t a threat to him or his plans for the future.

He blocked the sound of Xavier’s voice and thought to his own plans. For years, he’d bowed and scraped to the citizens of Naboo to earn their trust and finally after many arduous meetings and functions he’d succeeded in becoming their elected representative to serve as a Senator in the Galactic Senate on Coruscant.

His ultimate goal was to become Chancellor. Nevertheless, upon his ascension to the senatorial position, he’d already began to chip away at the basic honesty of the other representatives. Covertly, with his own associates doing his bidding, he introduced corruption and complacency. He smiled at his own cleverly thought out plans and he glanced at his reflection as they passed a full-length mirror in one of the halls. He smirked and in his arrogance, wondered if they’d put it there so he could admire himself. He did look splendid in his regal attire; however, layered underneath the expensive folds of clothing was his true persona of Darth Sidious - Sith Lord.

His carefully concealed features allowed him to pursue his ultimate goal. The destruction of the Jedi order and in his quest, he would use any mechanism available to him to assure the total annihilation of his enemies. He would build this device in his hidden compound in the abandoned industrial area of Coruscant. One day he would test it on a Jedi and then if it suited his needs he would modify it and turn it into a magnificent weapon.

~Chapter 1.~ A few weeks before the Trade Federation invade Naboo.~

Qui-Gon held his ground as Obi-Wan’s aggressive strike sent a tinge of pain up his sabre arm. He stepped back to bring his sabre across in an arc and counter Obi-Wan’s next expected strike. Nevertheless, he felt his own eyebrows rise when Obi-Wan didn’t follow through with another downwards strike. Instead, he Force flipped back and came down landing lightly on a large block, which was one of many strategically positioned in the training arena.

// I have the high ground Master.\\

// Do you call that high, Padawan; if I come over there, I can cut your legs off with one sweep of my blade.\\

//Master be serious do you think I’m just going to stand here and let you do that!\\

Qui-Gon leapt up and holding his blade in the horizontal position, he landed on the edge of the block. He knew Obi-Wan would have to block the blade or lose his head. He blocked, but the power of Qui-Gon hitting his blade knocked his apprentice down to the floor. He does have style and a quality that shows his self-confidence. Qui-Gon thought as Obi-Wan rolled and came up balanced and ready to continue.

He stepped off the block to engage Obi-Wan, jabbing at him. They were in the middle of the arena now and both combatants had ample space to attack. Therefore, he decided to use the space to give Obi-Wan a good work out. He knew Obi-Wan couldn’t resist an aggressive attack and he set the mood with his first strikes. However, Obi-Wan fell into the parry position and was blocking and deflecting, instead of attacking and twirling his sabre in a flashy display of showmanship. He was pleased to see this mature side of Obi-Wan. It proved to him that even though Obi-Wan loved to show off his acrobatics in front of a crowd he was controlling his youthful urge to do so.

Qui- Gon was in his element, he was a practitioner of Ataru and although Obi-Wan was proficient with the form, he had a tendency to lean towards Soresu, but right now he wasn’t using either form. Qui-Gon picked up speed and soon he was attacking his padawan from all directions, front, side and behind. Nevertheless, Obi-Wan continued to block and to Qui-Gon’s amazement as he drew his blade back to strike again, Obi-Wan switched off his blade. The action stunned Qui-Gon and he began to lower his blade.

However, Obi-Wan flashed a quick grin and before Qui-Gon realised it the blue blade was heading for Qui-Gon’s head, which he just blocked it in time and he felt the heat of it warm his neck.

//What was that my young padawan, if I’m not mistaken didn’t you just use Tràkata on me?\\

//Yes Master, I did.\\

//Where do you learn these trickery styles from? I didn’t know that Jedi sunk to deception, I hope you’re not being trained by a sith?\\

//I learnt it from Master Yoda. He told me, if I turned my sabre off and on, it would confuse you.\\

//Ah then, I was right! You have been trained by a sith.\\

//Master!- Master Yoda isn’t a sith, he’s a great Jedi.\\

// He teaches you too much, my impressionable apprentice.\\

The afternoon sun was disappearing and the arena had a shadow of evening settling over it. Their sabres glowed in the failing light as they danced across the floor with agility and speed. He sensed that Obi-Wan was about to leap up onto the exercise beam twenty feet above their heads. He groaned internally, he had no desire to follow Obi-Wan up there.

Nevertheless, that is exactly what Obi-Wan did.

Qui-Gon was going to call the duel off and was about to say so, when he saw the –I’ve got you now kind of grin plastered on his apprentice’s face and that cheeky voice, which came through the bond.

//You may be tall my Master, but you’re not tall enough to reach me up here. This time I do have the high ground.\\

//Oh! You think so my young apprentice,\\ was the calm response that floated up to his padawan. Qui-Gon gathered the Force around him and he leapt high landing lightly on the other end of the beam. His sabre was held in the ready position and he was coming in for the kill.

// Do not underestimate your opponent, Padawan.\\

//No Master and especially don’t underestimate the power of Qui-Gon Jinn.\\ he said, bowing, saluting with his sabre and jumping up and flipped back, landing on a beam higher up.

//Are you trying to tire me Padawan?\\

// If I thought I could do that Master, I’d keep jumping all day, and then I’d finally win a contest against you. However, Master, I’ve concluded that you never get tired.\\

//I’m sorry to disappoint you my young Padawan, I do and I am.\\

//Then shall we conclude our demonstration for the patient audience now Master? I could do with a nice long shower.\\

Qui-Gon jumped to the same beam Obi-Wan was balancing on and sent. //Just a few more minutes and then we’ll finish, my ever-impatient Padawan.\\

Obi-Wan sensed that the ‘few minutes more’ would be more difficult than the entire demonstration so far. There was a glint in his master’s eye, which signalled ‘I’m going to test you Padawan.’

His master stopped two metres away from him stretching out with his sabre. Lightly tapping
Obi-Wan’s extended blade. He concentrated on his masters eyes, and he opened up to the force for any warning or subtle hint of attack. He felt the nudge to his shields from his master. Obi-Wan knew he was trying to distract him. The monotonous tapping against his sabre was designed to make him lose focus. He’d fallen for that trap before and ended up with a burn that would remind him to keep his concentration in the here and now.

~Memory~

They’d been training and they’d been practicing the velocities technique. A series of attacks and parries, repeating each series, while increasing the speed of the movements until one opponent defeated the other. Obi-Wan had felt excitement fill him when his sabre brushed his master’s shoulder. He remembered Qui-Go’s shocked look light up his features, knowing that Obi-Wan had gotten through his defences.
His master stepped back to refocus, and Obi-Wan couldn’t help from grinning. He felt his confidence rise several notches and he began to twirl his sabre in anticipation that he was about to beat his master. He shifted his feet and bounced back and forth taunting his master to come in for the kill. Nevertheless, it didn’t happen, his master stepped slowly towards him and began tapping Obi-Wan’s sabre. He thought, two can play this game and he began tapping Qui-Gon’s sabre. After a few moments he was getting impatient, which was one of his few flaws. The monotonous tapping was becoming a bore and he noticed Qui-Gon smile at him. It was in that instant that he lost focus and he lowered his eyes for just a moment to watch the two blades touching each other.

Before he sensed the warning from the Force, his Master had struck him on his sabre arm causing him to drop his weapon. He hissed in pain as the heat of the blade singed his skin. However, Qui-Gon kept coming, and as Obi-Wan tried to twist away and retrieve his sabre, Qui-Gon singed his other arm. Although the sabres were on low power for training, the burns still hurt. Obi-Wan scrambled away and dove for his sabre, however, Qui-Gon got there first and hit Obi-Wan across his back, which elicited a stunned cry from him.

“Oww Master!...I yield!... I yield!” Obi-Wan said as his master pinned him to the floor with his foot.

“You were brash my young apprentice, you did well getting past my defences and you did surprise me with your first strike. However, you lost any advantage you had by becoming over confident. You were showing-off and when I didn’t do what you expected you’re impatience took over. You lost concentration at a vital point in the duel, when you should’ve been totally focused. I hope these burns will remind you in the future that your enemy will not stop to watch you bouncing around, he will just kill you.

~end of memory~

Obi-Wan wasn’t going to have a repeat that lesson again, so while Qui-Gon tapped his sabre he concentrated on the moment and watched Qui-Gon’s eyes intently. Eventually, the tapping ceased and their sabres were locked together and both master and apprentice were exerting pressure on the others blade. He knew that they had no room to manoeuvre, as the beam was only wide enough for one foot behind the other. Therefore, he had to free his sabre from the stalemate.

In this position, neither of them could parry and his master had more strength in his arms and would eventually push Obi-Wan’s sabre towards him. The only way he could escape in one piece was to use the Tràkata style that Yoda had showed him. He calculated where his master’s blade would swing to once he switched off his blade. He certainly didn’t want the blade to hit him. The timing had to be right and he stretched out with the Force estimating how far he would have to jump. Once his calculations were set he switched off his sabre and flipped backwards all in the same motion.

He landed on the beam lower down, but kept his eyes on his master in case Qui-Gon followed him down. He’d hoped that his move would push his master off balance and he would need to correct his footing, giving Obi-Wan time to get away. It worked and a saying that Master Yoda taught him popped into his head.
To know when to stay and fight, is as important as to know when to retreat to fight another day. Obi-Wan felt that he’d done the right thing and he jumped down to the floor of the arena to wait for his master.

// I’m pleased Padawan, I did everything I could to make you lose focus, you’ve learned your lesson well. You were in control of your actions and your landing on that beam was excellent. We were at a stalemate and you didn’t have much choice. I hate to admit it but the Tràkata movement served you well.\\

// Thank you Master.\\ Obi-Wan sent back.

Qui-Gon bowed to his padawan signalling an end to the match, and a roar of applause filled the room as both master and padawan bowed and attached their sabres to their belts.

“Padawan you did very well today, and I think you deserve some down time. I see some of your friends were here watching. You can have the rest of the evening to yourself. I think I’ll visit with some of my friends too.” Qui-Gon said smiling, placing a firm hand on his padawan’s shoulder.

“Thank you Master, I’ll see you later.”

Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan had only been back at the Temple for a day; and unfortunately for them, each month a Master/Padawan team were slated to give an exhibition showing how the apprentice was doing in his training. Today had been their turn, even though Qui-Gon had tried to convince the council that they were too tired as they’d been away on a mission for a month, the council insisted and so they had indulged them.
He watched Obi-Wan walk away and smiled; He is growing so quickly.

Wonderful! Am I right to have a bad feeling as to the frozen padawan to be? Knowing our author, it may well be.

Yes he is! Lol. He's a nasty tricky senile old creture with a bad temper and he loves dashing apprentices hopes and dreams.
Was that an acurate discription? laugh

I loved the Master/Apprentice banter! I was half expecting one of them to break out a your mom joke.

Can't wait to see who Palpy decides to freeze.

ooo

The fading rays of coruscant's sun caused murky shadows to engulf the entire central business district, and the seemingly shadowy fingers of night crept out further to consume even the decomposing and deserted outer city limits. As dusk heralded the coming of darkness, artificial lighting blinked into existence in the corridors of the Galactic Senate rotunda as an official hurried to Chancellor Valorum’s office.

“Chancellor Valorum, Vice chair, Amedda; please forgive my intrusion. I’ve just received this communiqué from the outer rim. The trade federation have objected strongly to the senates mandate to institute a tax on the free trade zones. They say that they don’t take kindly to the republic interfering with their business.”

“I’m not sure that we should have taken Senator Palpatine’s advice when he suggested that we should control them. I think we’ve severely underestimated the trade federation’s reaction to the levy we’ve imposed.” Valorum said glancing to his Vice Chairman, Mas Amedda.

Mas Amedda, a Chargrain being with well-developed lethorns draped from his shoulders calmly nodded. He knew this was going to happen, because he'd helped Palpatine instigate the proposal to the other senators.
Unfortunately, for Valorum, Amedda was a being who loved the high life and recently, Valorum had accused him of misusing his parliamentary powers to obtain fine arts and antiques to add to his vast collection. Amedda was certain if Valorum stayed in office, he would be out of a job. However, Palpatine had convinced him that if they worked together both would achieve their goals in life. So now, the axe was beginning to fall on Valorum and Amedda was feeling smug about it.

“The decision was made by the full senate body Chancellor. The trade federation must abide by that decision. You cannot back down now; they will take that as a sign of weakness. I'll call for a meeting between the senate and their senior officials and if they want to debate it, we shall put their case on the agenda.”

"There are too many agenda’s and debates, Amedda. We are bogged down with them and it seems that the senate body is incapable of making a quick decision anymore.”

“That may be Chancellor, but that’s how the senate works.” Amedda said leaving the Chancellor and the official alone.

“Chancellor, what do you think will happen? What if the trade federation come through with their threat and begin to blockade trade routes?” The official asked.

‘If it comes to that I’ll send my own negotiators to settle their dispute, but nevertheless, we’ll have to wait and see what happens when they’re put on the agenda.”

ooo

In the outer city limits of Coruscant’s deserted manufacturing area, another meeting was in process. “Rise Darth Maul, did you do as I ordered, have you taken care of the opposition?”

“Yes my Master, as you wished I made sure that the Neimoidian Nute Gunray has been elected Viceroy. His enemies are at the bottom of the lava pits on Mustafar.”

“Are you certain no one saw you or recognised you?”

“I am certain my Master, it was done under the cover of darkness and I disposed of them discreetly.”

“Good, with Gunray under my rule we can initiate a blockade of Naboo. As senator of such a peaceful planet, I'll gain the sympathy vote once Valorum’s inability to make a decision is seen on the podium. The Trade Federation will demand a commission to investigate the accusations and I will suggest to someone that a vote of no confidence be made against Valorum’s rule and then I shall become Chancellor!”

“It is your destiny my Master.” Maul said eagerly.

“Yes, we’ve been patient, but we must continue to be so. I will contact the new Viceroy with my congratulations and then tell him what I want him to do. He is such a coward that he will obey my every command and then when his usefulness is at an end, you my dear apprentice may take him to join his opponent’s in Mustafar’s lava.

“It will be my pleasure my Master.”

“Queen Amidala is too young and naïve to defend Naboo from the blockade, she will ask for my help. It took me many years to gain they trust and they will follow my lead blindly. They have no idea how to run a planet. By placing a child on the throne they are asking for trouble, and I’m certainly the one to give it to them. I should have been made the Senatorial representative of Naboo ten years ago, but those idiotic Governors led by Sio Bibble would insist that the heirs to the throne should become senators after their rule. Well thanks to you, my apprentice they have run out of adult heirs and they couldn’t hold my tenure as senator back any longer. Soon it will be your turn to reek havoc on the Jedi and the Republic, Darth Maul.”

“We have waited a long time.”

“Yes we have and while we wait, I have another mission for you. I have to return to my office immediately, because I have a meeting with two Jedi Masters. They are under the assumption that Chancellor Valorum wants to fund an army of clones and they believe he's asked me to speak to them on his behalf. I want you to use your skills in voice manipulation to convince the Jedi that you are Valorum, wait here for my call.”

“Yes Master.”

ooo

Palpatine arrived back to his office to find Jedi Master Dooku waiting for him. “Master Dooku, where is Master Sifo-Dyas?”

“Hello Senator, I wanted to speak to you privately before Sifo-Dyas arrived.”

“Certainly, are you having second thoughts about what we discussed before, Count?” Palpatine said as he stood looking out towards the Jedi Temple. “I do hope you don’t mind me addressing you by your title, after all you've indicated to me that you're seriously considering leaving the Jedi order.”

“No, my friend I don’t mind at all. I am a Count by birthright and I’m pleased that you and I have been able to have our private conversations. You know my views on the way the Jedi Order bow and scrape to the senate body. The council have lost their way and I’m appalled that they have lost the values that the Jedi order once stood for by continuing to serve the Republic, especially, when it’s common knowledge that corruption is rife within the walls of the Galactic Senate.”

“Yes my friend you and I both know this to be true, but while ever the Jedi council back Chancellor Valorum, nothing will change. I wonder, are the Jedi afraid of change?” Palpatine asked.

“They are set in their ways and are blind to the coming darkness that I sense. I know that Master Yoda senses it also, but he does nothing about it and over the past ten years, Jedi numbers have dropped considerably. We were ten thousand strong once, but now we’ve dwindled to just over four thousand Jedi. The number of younglings found throughout the galaxy is at its lowest and now the Jedi have a reputation of being puppets of the republic.”

“Yes Count, I can see that the Jedi have been pushed to their limits and that's why I’m always open to suggestions. An army to keep the peace instead of the Jedi is the first step in helping them. Personally, I feel quite badly for them and I believe we must take the initiative to prevent any further unrest in the galaxy.”

“It is this unrest that worries me and I've tried to convince the Council that we are too involved in the senate machinations. They cannot see that the Jedi order is in jeopardy of destruction if they continue to serve the way they do. I honestly don’t want to be a part of a disintegrating culture. I have ideals to live up to and I was born and bred to lead, not to be conquered.”

“You surprise me Master Dooku; I have heard that you were one of their finest Masters. You’re sounding more like a political idealist, rather than an honoured and dedicated Jedi Master.”

“Senator, my dedication to an order that is dying saddens me. However, if your plan works and we can consign a clone army to be ready to fight for the republic, then there is a chance that the Jedi order will survive. I spoke to Master Sifo-Dyas, who knows Prime Minister Lamu Su of Kamino personally. I’m sure that we can convince him to go there and place an order for two hundred thousand units on behalf of the republic and by the time we need them they’ll be ready.”

ooo

“Excuse me, Senator Palpatine. Master Sifo-Dyas has arrived.” Palpatine's aid said as he opened the door to allow the Jedi to enter.

“Master Sifo-Dyas, thank you for coming. Master Dooku explained to you the reason for this meeting.”

“Yes Senator Palpatine, the Chancellor is seeking my help in going to Kamino to place an order for an army of clones. I understand why the republic would want to have an army and I can see that by using clones, we could have a fully formed and trained army in as little as ten years time, and it would be beneficial to the Jedi order if an army of this magnitude was formed."

“Yes, we have the vote behind us to procure a clone army. However, the cloners on Kamino are hesitant to accept an order for so many clones unless the Jedi are in favour of it. Even the Chancellor has tried to convince the council. He wishes the republic to invest in this clone army, and he is adamant that in time the Jedi council will see the necessity of such an order. He is desperate for this to happen.” Palpatine explained.

“I would like to speak to the Chancellor if I may. If he tells me that this is what is needed then I will go there myself!” Sifo-Dyas said.

“I will place the call to him now Master Jedi.” Palpatine pressed in a code, “Chancellor, I have Master Sifo-Dyas here he would like to speak to you,” and handed the comlink to the Jedi.

Palpatine and Dooku moved over to the window while the Jedi spoke to the person he believed was the Chancellor and once he’d finished he put the communicator back on Palpatine’s desk.

“I've made my decision Senator; I’ll go back to the temple and gather some things for the journey and I’ll leave for Kamino as soon as I return. I assume you have all the necessary papers and the payment in order?”

“Yes everything has been arranged and a fast ship is at your disposal. When can you leave?”

“I can leave tonight if you wish. I’m on leave from my duties for the next week, so I won’t be missed. When I return from Kamino, Master Dooku and I will endeavour to convince the council that placing the order for the clones was a good idea.”

“Thank you Master Jedi, Master Dooku and I will see to it that everything you need is put aboard your ship. We shall see you shortly.”

ooo

Palpatine waited until Dyas left and then he turned to Dooku. “Do you think it's wise to try to convince the Council so soon after we place the order. They might try to stop it and Master Sifo-Dyas may find himself in trouble with the council. I certainly wouldn’t want a dedicated Master like him to be ostracised by them for going against their mandate. The Chancellor did indicate to me that he wanted it kept a secret for sometime. What do you think Count?”

“I agree Senator and when Sifo-Dyas returns from Kamino I’ll convince him that we should keep this to our selves. I’ll go to the temple archives and remove the planet Kamino from the data banks. It’s a planet in the Outer Rim, just south of the Rishi Maze. The planet doesn’t have any significance to the Jedi; therefore, it shouldn’t be missed if it’s deleted from the archives.”

“Excellent Count, while you’re gone I shall inform the Chancellor and make sure everything is in order.”

Once Palpatine was alone, he picked up his communicator. “Well done, my apprentice. The fool Jedi believed you were Valorum. I want you to follow Sifo-Dyas to Kamino and when I receive word from him that the order has been placed, you may relieve the Jedi of his worries.”

“Yes my Master it will be done.”
