Title: A Race Against Time
Author: Kelia
Characters: Obi-Wan, Anakin
Genre: AU, mystery/drama
Timeframe: Pre ATOC – Anakin is 19
Summary: When Anakin fails to return from what should have been a routine mission, Obi-Wan begins a frantic quest to find his missing padawan before it’s too late.
A/N: This is another bunny that’s been nipping at my ankles for awhile now. I’m not sure how long the story will be, but it is all plotted and outlined. Now, it’s up to the muse to fill in the blanks grin Updates will be every other week but if you would like a PM, just say the word. happy

Chapter 1

Obi-Wan Kenobi sat perfectly still in the center of the floor, his hands resting palm up on his knees as he sank deeper into the Force, seeking the source of disturbance he’d been feeling all morning. He tensed slightly but kept his breathing and heart rate steady as a image began to form.

Anakin stood in a dark, dingy dungeon. His bare chest was coated with streaks of sweat and dirt, his pants were torn and his were feet covered with scratches and blood. His eyes frantically darted from side to side as he crouched into a defensive position.

Obi-Wan’s heart skipped a beat as he felt an icy wave of fear shoot through his already exhausted padawan.

The sound of a door sliding open caused Anakin to whip around, his hands clenched into fists.

“Get away from me!”

A ferocious roar filled the air as a rancor entered, his fangs dripping with drool.

Anakin dropped to the ground, his fingers desperately closing around a large rock. He began to rise, a sly grin flickering across his face as he raised his arm and threw the rock, hitting the rancor directly between the eyes.

The beast let out an outraged howl but before Anakin could react, the sound of another door sliding open filled the room. Anakin’s face contorted in horror as he slowly turned, in time to see a second rancor enter, it’s eyes filled with hunger.

“Nnnnnoooooo!!!!”

Anakin’s scream echoed throughout the room as the two beasts simultaneously launched themselves into the air, Anakin quickly disappearing beneath them.

Obi-Wan’s eyes flew open as he jolted back to the present. Placing a hand over his racing heart, he forced himself to take a few deep breaths. He knew the vision was not one of the present, but of the future, or one possible future.

“Always in motion the future is.”

Yoda’s words raced through is mind as he reached into the pock of his tunic for his com. He punched in Anakin’s number, whispering a silent prayer his wayward padawan would, for once, answer promptly.

No such luck.

He tried not to let that concern him, knowing Anakin was not on a planet that had any rancors. Rising to his feet, he shuffled across the room for the datapad that contained King H’darr’s private com number. Obi-Wan hadn’t been thrilled when the Council assigned Anakin his first solo mission. Even though the mission was routine, he still felt Anakin was a bit too reckless to go off on his own, however, he trusted the Council’s judgment and offered no objections when the announcement was made.

Obi-Wan chuckled as he remembered Anakin’s enthusiasm. He tried to warn him escorting Prince Alen from the military academy he’d been attending on Corellia back home to Nubia would not be very exciting, especially since the Prince would have his own security team, but that did little to curb his padawan’s enthusiasm.

“It’s still an assignment, Master,” Anakin had grinned. "My first solo assignment.”

He’d been beaming with pride when he’d left, promising to fulfill his duty and make the Order proud.

“I know you will, Anakin,” Obi-Wan had assured him with a smile. “May the Force be with you.”

He’d watched like a proud parent as Anakin had boarded his ship, waiting until the ship had streaked out of sight before returning to their quarters.

He took a deep breath, hoping he would hear all was well as he entered the King’s number.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

“There was an attack on Prince Alen’s ship?” Obi-Wan’s voice rose slightly as he struggled to keep his emotions under control.

“Yes, but my son is safe thanks to Jedi Skywalker’s quick thinking,” the King hastily replied. “He got my son into the small shuttle we had in reserve and got him back home while my security team dealt with the attackers.”

Obi-Wan breathed a small sigh of relief. “I hope no one on the team was hurt.”

“They’re fine,” the King assured him with a smile. “And I can’t thank the Order enough for sending a Jedi for additional protection.”

“We are always happy to provide assistance when we can,” Obi-Wan replied modestly.

“Something I deeply appreciate and will never forget,” the King nodded. “I was just happy Jedi Skywalker accepted the reward I wanted to give him.”

Obi-Wan tensed. “Reward?”

“I know the Order frowns on any kind of acknowledgement for a job well done,” King H’darr sighed. “But I hope you will make an acceptation in this case. Jedi Skywalker not only saved my son’s life, but as the sole heir to my throne, my kingdom as well. The reward was the least I could do and he deserved it,” he paused. “I take it he didn’t mention this when he returned to the Temple?”

“He…he left Nubia?” Obi-Wan frowned. Anakin should have contacted him or the Council once the mission was completed. “When?”

“Three days ago,” the King answered. “I got the impression he was in quite a hurry to get back, anxious as he was to have his ship readied as soon as possible. Perhaps he stopped somewhere to treat himself before returning to the Temple? He is a young man, after all.”

“I’m sure that’s it.” Obi-Wan’s voice was hollow as a wave of dread washed over him. Thanking the King for his time, he quickly broke the connection as he tried to figure out why Anakin would accept any reward and where he could have rushed off to.

The truth hit him like a punch to the gut.

Tatooine.

For years Anakin talked of returning to his home planet and rescuing his mother and Obi-Wan had no doubt whatever amount King H’darr’s reward was, it was more than enough to buy Shmi Skywalker’s freedom. The question was, who owned her now and would they be willing to sell her?

If his vision was any indication, not only would Anakin be unsuccessful in freeing his mother, but he would soon be in very grave danger.

Chapter 2

Tatooine

Obi-Wan stood before the run down junk shop, eyeing the various broken spaceships piled alongside it’s walls. ‘So this is where Anakin spent much of his childhood.’ A wave of sadness washed over him as he pictured his young padawan working under the brutal twin suns instead of playing with his friends as he should have been doing.

“Are you going to stand there staring at my merchandise all day or buy something?” A grumpy voice demanded.

Obi-Wan snapped back to reality, turning to face the clearly annoyed Toydarian hovering in front of him. “I beg your pardon.” Obi-Wan forced a slight smile. “I was just looking for the owner of this establishment. I believe his name is Watto.”

The Toydarian’s eyes narrowed into thin slits. “You tell that impatient, son of a bantha, Sebulba, I will pay him next week like we agreed,” he spat. “And unless you are planning to buy something, get off my property.”

Obi-Wan blinked in surprise. “I think there’s been some confusion,” he began. “I am not here at anyone’s request. I’m actually looking for someone.”

“We’ve already established that,” Watto replied in a bored tone. “And you’ve found me. Now what do you want?”

“I’m actually looking for Shmi Skywalker,” Obi-Wan corrected.

Watto gasped, his wings flapping more furiously.

“Or her son, Anakin,” Obi-Wan continued, a wave of dread washing over him. “I know he came looking for her,” he added, before Watto could deny it.

“It’s like I told, Ani, I don’t own her anymore,” Watto shrugged. “I lost her a few months ago at the last pod races.” He shook his head. “That sithdamned Sebulba had to have been cheating.”

“Who did you lose her to?” Obi-Wan asked in a hollow tone.

“Jabba the Hutt.”

An icy wave of fear settled in Obi-Wan’s stomach. While he didn’t know much about Jabba in particular, he knew Hutts in general were evil, corrupt, dangerous and not the slightest bit interested in a fair exchange of money for a slave.

“Do you know if Anakin went to Jabba’s home -,”

“Palace,” Watto corrected with a snort. “No Hutt would fit into a home.”

“Palace,” Obi-Wan repeated in a placid tone.

Watto sighed deeply. “I warned him not to,” he began in a sad voice. “I told him Jabba wouldn’t give up his mother. Not after working so hard to get her back.”

“What do you mean?” Obi-Wan frowned. “Why would Jabba want Shmi Skywalker?”

“Because Gardulla was trying to buy her back from me.” Watto chuckled at Obi-Wan’s dumbstruck expression. “Ani must not have talked much about how things work here,” he observed. “Gardulla is one of the crime lords on Tatooine. She and Jabba are rivals in everything from the races to the gambling in the cantinas to the purchasing of slaves. What one wants the other tries to take. Its fun to watch,” Watto paused. “When I’m not on the losing end, that is.”

Obi-Wan closed his eyes as a myriad of emotions flowed through him. He didn’t doubt for one second his wayward padawan would try to use the credits King H’darr gave him to attempt to purchase his mother back, no matter how foolish the notion. “Do you know where Jabba’s palace is?”

“It’s on the fringe of the Western Dune Sea,” Watto answered, leaning forward. “You aren’t actually thinking of going out there, are you?”

“If that’s where Anakin and his mother are, that is where I need to be,” Obi-Wan replied dryly.

“If you think you’re going to use any of those fancy Jedi tricks on Jabba, think again,” Watto warned. “Like Toydarians, Hutts are impervious to such tactics.”

“I’ll keep that in mind,” Obi-Wan nodded, handing him a few credits.

Watto’s eyes bugged. “If you need anymore information, you come see me, ‘eh? Nobody knows as much as me about anything. I could even help you plan on getting Ani and his mother back…for a few more credits of course.”

“That won’t be necessary,” Obi-Wan assured him, turning his gaze to the Western horizon. “I sense I’ll be improvising most of the time.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
A cool breeze blew across the Western Dune, stirring otherwise dormant sand into to thin funnels, covering everyone and everything in it’s path with a thin layer of coarse grains. Obi-Wan huddled behind a cluster of rocks, tightly clutching the hood of his cloak in a vain effort to keep the sand from getting inside his tunic. He smiled sadly as he remembered all the times Anakin complained about sand “getting everywhere” no matter how many precautions one took.

He’d been watching all the comings and goings from Jabba’s palace all afternoon, hoping he could figure a way to sneak in but if appearances were any indication, if Jabba had friends or anyone in his good graces, they did not come to visit him. The only beings Obi-Wan observed entering or leaving, were escorted by Gamorrean guards and none were very pleased about being there.

He tensed as the door the palace slide open. Four Gamorrean’s appeared, each carrying a large bucket in both hands. Obi-Wan watched curiously as they waddled several meters to the edge of the cliff, dumping the contents of their buckets one by one. His gazed traveled from the Gamorreans to the Palace and back again, a plan beginning to form in his mind.

He waited until the guards passed him on their way to the entrance before rising and falling in silently behind them. Using the Force to shield his presence, he quietly entered the palace, ducking behind the first wall he came to. All was quiet in the massive audience chamber. He could feel Jabba, contently sleeping, in the Northern part of the palace. Several guards walked by but most of the beings inside were asleep or passed out in a drunken stupor.

Breathing a sigh of relief, he cautiously began to make his way through the audience chamber to the passageway behind what he assumed was Jabba’s dais. He could feel Anakin’s presence radiating a few meters away, though he didn’t sense any immediate danger.

‘Cells,’ Obi-Wan thought, taking note of the heavily fortified doors with a small window cut into their center. Taking a quick peek into each room, he continued down the narrow passageway stopping about half-way, his eyes widening in shock as he spotted Anakin, lying on the dusty floor, his hands shackled to the wall above him.
