I don't know if anyone will really be interested, but the ADF (Aus Defence Force) is now catching on to America's "Land Warrior" project more or less by putting AUD$35 into it's new Soldier Enhancement One (SEv.1) program.
Just like the American LW it is pretty much a communications upgrade, upgraded F-88 rifle, simple navigational computing hardware and what not all displayed through the futuristic looking eye piece.
SEv.2 is already under development after the 1RAR field tested SEv.1 and gave it the thumbs up.
All the RAR units of the ADF are getting the upgrades first, but I have a feeling the SASR are keeping away from it...and so they should.

Just wondering what you guys think of this, as well as the US LW project. I'm not 100% sure if the money should just be put into better training or if this upgrade really will make the difference in an operation. But I guess if it's good enough for the RAR regiments then it's good enough for me tongue

This is good news for the ADF, and I think the cost will be justified.

At least in the US, which has reached LW block III, it's more than just a communications upgrade, it a complete increase in situational awareness.

Precise GPS data can be fed into the monocular, giving an (eventual) 3-d image of the surrounding terrain. (think of it as real time map-quest directions...road block ahead? Find the best route to bypass it, etc..)

If anyone has seen Aliens (Alien2), the capability to link physical data is also being fielded. A team leader sitting in a Stryker, can view real time health information on the members of his team, among other info.

Getting back to the ADF though, it's interesting that they are using the AUG as the prototype. For ADF Special Operations troops, the Aussie military purchased a quanity of US M-4 carbines, because the AUG was having "toughness" issues.

Now that's cool (the Alien 2 type-tech)!

Being a former Navy Corpsman, I can see great value in that.

happy

Yeah I think the only reason we are really sticking with the AUG was for accuracy reasons. From what my mates in the infantry have said it seams it is far more accurate than the M-4's, or any of the carbines they've used. I can't reall say though, can't compare the two weapons. I can also imagine the AUG to be lighter than the M-4, although that's probably why they are not as tough. When I used the AUG it felt rathe light to me, although there was only one round chambered and no magazine attatched.

My mates who have combat experience are no longer serving in the army so I'll have to ask my mate in the reserves if he knows much about it.

Well the Austeyr has certain issues (it's a local varient of the Steyr AUG, so it's not an AUG proper, but an Austeyr), like being a bull-pup and having certain parts prone to melting...

Is that really a problem though? I guess it could be, but I can't see how. Only thing I can think of is that for people that shoot left handed, is that the face may be to close to the shell ejection mechanism.

having certain parts prone to melting...

No arguments there.

The Lithgow SLR?

That's the one. We had SLR's and F1 subs in our terrifying arsenal.

Bullpups are a problem for reloading. You have to change your entire position to load a new magazine, which isn't an issue with say the M4.

Fair enough. I only thought there would be a problem reloading if you have the butt against your shoulder wrong. Sure you'll have to aim up and away from your target to get a new mag in, but is there a considerable difference in reload time for the Styer and the carbines?
I don't know, havn't held a carbine...yet. devil

It has more to do with keeping a low ready position if walking (or running) or a good supported position.

With the M4 or other conventional style, you can pop a magazine in and still be at ready. With a bullpup, you have to either move your hand way back, or tilt the entire gun. It's not a big deal, probaly a second or two.

But I from what I've heard, the main issue was that "melt factor." Actually, not really melting, per se, but more of a warping.

Well who'd've thunk'd plastic would be affected by heat, or that supersonic projecticles could generate anykind of heat as they left the barrel?

Well, the plastic isn't a ceramic... and barrels are rifled, which means, that there's friction.

Never handled a carbine before, but shouldn't a bullpup's reloading be identical to an M16's reloading?

I guess there wasn't much consideration with the wear and tear-weight ratio.
My mate said he didn't really like the short barrel on the AUG, I guess the SA80 has the same issues.
Anyhoo, I wasn't aware that they may be changing the standard firearm issue to the ADF troops, kind of confusing if they plan to do that while they are decking out the SE troops with modified AUGs.

Well, even the Rheinmetall 120mm L55 and L44(did I get the number right?) has to be replaced after so many firings. That's a tank gun by the way, and the best around (unless the Russians came up with some huge gun already or something)
