	How the vaccine works: Influenza vaccine is produced by growing the virus in eggs. The virus is killed and processed to create the vaccine, which is given by injection under the skin. The body then produces antibodies to the virus over the next two to four weeks. If the immunized person then comes into contact with the influenza virus, the antibodies attack and kill the virus before it has a chance to cause infection. The vaccine contains the 3 most likely strains to be active during the "flu season" Why the shortage: Almost half of the nation's flu vaccine will not be delivered this year. Chiron, a major manufacturer of flu vaccine, will not be distributing any influenza vaccine this flu season. Chiron was to make 46-48 million doses vaccine for the United States. Chiron is a British company. Recently British health officials stopped Chiron from distributing and making the vaccine when inspectors found unsanitary conditions in the labs. Some lots of the vaccine were recalled and destroyed. Why is our vaccine made in the UK and not the US? The major pharmaceutical companies in the US provided almost 90% of the nations flu vaccine at one time. They did this despite a very low profit margin for the product. Basically, they were doing us a favor. In the late 80's a man from North Carolina who had received the vaccine got the flu. The strain he caught was one of the strains in that years vaccine made by a US company. What did he do? He sued and he won. He was awarded almost $5 million! After that case was appealed and lost, most US pharmaceutical companies stopped making the vaccine. The liability out weighed the profit margin. Since UK and Canadian laws prohibit such frivolous law suits UK and Canadian companies began selling the vaccine in the US. 	Why do most people even take the flu shot? I hve never had one and neither has any other member of my family. We get mild cases of the flu every year but no worse than those who take the shot. -----signature-----

	I'm with werewook. I don't understand the hype about this flu shot "crisis" we're in. I mean, I understand why they give it to seniors and people who can potentially die from it, but...... 	Same here. i have never taken a flu shot. I sometimes get the flu and sometimes I dont. I have known people who have taken the flu shot and gotten sick from that. 	I dont think even a flu vaccine would have helped that. I think eventually there will be another flu strain that takes us by surprise and creates an epidemic. 	Influenza is not just a bad cold. It can be a very serious disease. I have never come across anyone who has even had a case where they were laid up for a few days. When I get it I just sleep, eat soup, watch TV, throw up and repeat until it's over. -----signature-----

	It's an email rumor circulating right now. He quoted it verbatim, but it amounts to an urban legend - sort of like the one where you wake up in your hotel room with your kidneys missing, only politicized. Edwards was never involved in such a case. The real issue with flu shots is that no one knows what version(s) of the virus is (are) going to circulate in a given year. So virologists make an educated guess for an anti-flu vaccine cocktail. You probably didn't have the flu then-instead, an intestinal infection or a bad cold. What most people call "the flu" is simply a severe cold. Influenza is deadly, even to seemingly healthy people. In fact, the Spanish Flu pandemic killed MORE people than the first World War. I might have had the flu, maybe once that I can think of, when I was about nine years old, and I could barely move off of the sofa. I remember that hideous fever feeling-freezing from chills, but still being flushed from my fever, my throat was on fire, I could hardly breath. Ugh.
