The Japanese samurai sought death to avoid hesitancy in battle. Maybe we can model ourselves in a similar way.

I at times have a fear of the infinity of death for some reason. I'm a christian, so I believe in heaven, which sounds like a great place, but i'm there forever, and for some reason it scares me to be "alive" (in spirit anyways) forever. Likewise if christianity is false and I die and I'm done for good, I have a fear of the opposite type of infinity, being out of existence forever, although at least in that case I'd have no idea of that, as I'd cease to be, but that's kinda scary too. In some ways reincarnation seems like the best way to do it.

In my view, there's nothing bad about it. The only problem is that it can be unexpected. Look at Steve Irwin. But the good thing about his death was that he died loving at what he did, I sure like to die like that about the career I am part in.

But suicide is never an answer. Why kill yourself, when life will do it for you...

I find it ironic that someone would consider Reincarnation the best way to go because from what I know of the religions that believe in it the whole point of all your lives is to stop being reincarnated. Because life sucks and then you die, and then you get another sucky life.

Bringing this old thread back up too. The fear of death seems to be what drives life, and I don't think we can conquer that fear until we know WHY we fear death. Could it not be anything logical at all, and just purely be a biological response we can never get rid of?

I can tell you one thing, seeing it all the time like I do in my profession can both numb you to it and be emotionally taxing (as oxymoronic as that sounds).

I've seen so much grief, so many people die, that it makes you almost feel like you're having a mini mid-life crisis and are faced with your own mortality all the time.

That said, there is reward in helping these families get through such a very painful time.

As well as it [The Bible] can just as easily be right.

Oh, I don't know about that...

What I hate is that anyone who knows you will be grief stricken once you are dead. For the person that is dead, who knows how or what they will feel afterwards. It could be scary once you get into the different kind of world (whatever it is), then good or bad after the deeds and sins are counted. Or just wait in a good or bad place until the judgement.

Meh...I guess I'm always ready, in a way, to meet my maker.

Whether he is ready to meet me is an entirely different matter peace

However, death...I dunno...seems kind of distant. The problem could also be the awareness of death itself. You can't see it, but, especially when you do something dangerous, and are aware of it, its "unknownness" clings to you in a very uncomfortable fashion. It's like that chill up your spine you get when you hear a sound you can't identify, but you know it's close, or closing.

On the immortality question - I wouldn't want to be entirely immortal. I would just want control over my own death - that I could forestall it as long as I wanted to, and when I was finished with life, accept death.

I no longer have the luxury of thinking "death is something that happens to old people." I've been too close to it myself, and it makes me uncomfortable. I think the dying is worse than death, though.

The idea of hell is the only thing that frightens me about death. Non-existence... well, I wouldn't know, so how could it bother me? And I'm not sure if hell exists, but the possibility of it is enough to bug.

Personally, I'm not a fan of immortality, in general. Cuz, other people aren't.

This is a very interesting thread that I never noticed before.

I guess one distinction to make is; do people fear death, or the cessation of life? I personally fear the former. It's easy to say "why fear it, it's just nothingness". Well, to me that's a concept you can't quite wrap your mind around, because its sort of inherently impossible to ponder what a state of unconciousness would be like when every way you ponder it you are doing from a perspective of conciousness.

If there is a God, i'm in big trouble. That's why I fear death.

It can be scary not knowing exactly what's on the other side. Many who have researched it believe death is not an end, but only a beginning to something much large (this plays into afterlife obviously).

This topic was interestingly addressed in the movie Flatliners. Although extremely risky and unethical, I wonder if such an experiment could be possible and if so, has it ever been done? This was slightly different than near death experiences, as these deaths were staged and more carefully controlled, by Dr.'s themselves.

By medical convention, death is the condition from you do not return.

Even if such an experiment were to pass ethical muster (which would never happen), by rigorous scientific standards, it wouldn't prove anything, as a person who can be revived is never "really" dead.

From the standpoint of the medical/scientific community, there will never be a definitive answer to this question without a fundamental redefinition of what constitutes "death".

Peace,
