I'm very sorry to hear about your father JediPristiss, I lost my grandfather the same way. I was going to make a smart remark about the title of this thread, but then I read your post and it made me realise that it is a serious thread. God bless.

Jahithophel posted: Either way, it's a big step up from my present neighbors.
Maybe, but since your neighbors are apparently going to be an improvement either way, why not take the nicer neighborhood?
P.S. While in the end the decision isn't up to me, I highly doubt Ghandi's P.O. box will be in Hell.
I was refering to Christian Hell, where Ghandi most certainly is.
But the reason I don't worry about the neighborhood is that [whisper]Heaven and Hell are just pretend.[/whisper]

I don't believe in God or any religious system. Therefore, when I die, I believe I will become food worm and I will drift into nothingness. If your life really sucks, it can be a relief but otherwise, it's not so great.

I was recently having a conversation with this, and it ended with sheer semantics:
"So you believe that when you die you'll be nowhere?"
"No, I believe that when I die I will have ceased to be at all."

To me, that's one of the most frightening things imaginable.

Well, I guess, except you wouldn't exist, so you wouldn't mind. You also wouldn't be on fire with Ghandi.

Yeah, I see what you're saying, and I see how it would be hard to understand, but if I were given the choice, and that choice was based on what I fear the most, I would eagerly choose to burn for eternity over not being able to feel or be anything in the black abyss of nothingness. In hell, I would at least continue to have memories of my wife, son and daughter, but with nothingness, they're gone forever to me. Just a personal choice I guess.

Personally, I think that is why we as human beings invented the concept of an afterlife, as it's pretty hard to comprehend the concept of absolute zero consciousness.

Ditto. My fear of death came from a nightmare I had has a small child about the destruction of the world and the non-exsitence afterwards. It scared the crap out of me. So it's the idea of not exsiting is what makes death so frightening.

I think it's mostly because humans, by virtue of existing, can't comprehend non-existence. What is nothing? We don't have an answer to that question. I think it's just a very scary thought, that at some point everything stops, and you'll no longer have an effect on anything. Losing self-awareness is enough to freak anyone out, I think. Obviously, if you have a very firm religious belief (which, unfortunately, I don't), then you have less to fear. But me, I'm duly afraid, but at the same time, I think when it's time for me to die, I'll feel ready. Right now, I'm sixteen; of course I'm not ready!
As for Ghandi being in "Christian hell"...I knew there was a reason I disassociated myself.

People naturally don't like changes (at least most people) and since death is perhaps the most drastic of changes, that's why people fear it so much.
