We may be getting another test of public opinion, albeit in deeply regrettable circumstances, fairly soon. I understand that Dr Tony Wright, Labour MP for Cannock Chase, is seriously ill. He has suffered from leukaemia for some time but his condition has clearly worsened as he has not voted in the House of Commons since the 23rd Januray.

I always regarded Tony Wright as one of the more agreeable and sensible Labour members of Parliament. I had a lot of time for him, but then I really went off him after the Cash For Peerages scandal and the way he openly criticised the police and came to Blair and Levy's aid.
Nevertheless, obviously I'm sad to hear he may not have long to live and I hope he recovers.
What kind of majority does he have in his seat? Is it a safe Labour seat?

Cannock Chase is pretty safe for Labour at a general election with a majority of over 9,000 in 2005. The old seat of Cannock and Burntwood was tory from 83-92 but on the current boundaries labour would have probably held it throughout the 80's, although 83 would have been very close. At a by election however things could be different and with the Lib Dems well back in third place the tories would be well placed to challenge for the seat.

Things like this almost make me want to vote tory again just to get rid of the pitiful scum running the country.
Hodge attacks Proms: they're narrow and lack the common British values
God I hope the next time Margaret Hodge sees a bus she throws herself in front of it.

Mrs Hodge is one of those ghastly women, like Hewitt and Jowell, that seem to want to nanny all of us. I've always thought The Proms was one of the best things we do as a nation (althogh I've never been)
And for all his faults, I think under a Cameron government we would see an end to this kind of self loathing.

Seems like a pretty safe seat. Of course, as you say, in by elections anything can happen, but it looks unlikely to me that we would see a Tory upset here.
I would like to get a by election in a proper marginal seat. That would be a real test, but it never seems to happen.

If (and lets hope there isn't) there is a by election here the tories should gain the seat if they have real hopes of winning the next election. A good comparison is the old Mid Staffordshire seat (which contained some territory now in this seat). The tories held it in 1987 with a majority of over 14,000. At a by election in 1990 Labour won it with a majority of over 9,000 on a 21% swing.

So, its D-Day for the Lisbon Treaty What do we make of this milarky? At first glance, the Lib-Dem's seem to have made a complete disaster of it!
And of course, old Gord is running scared of standing by his manifesto commitment to hold a referendum.

It is quite amusing really. The referendum amendment will fail anyway so Clegg could easily have offered a free vote. Instead he has imposed a three line whip, demanding not a vote for or against but abstention, and will probably lose three front benchers and see upto a third of his MP's defy him.
EDIT: The tory unity on this issue is impressive. I gather that only 5 tory MP's will oppose the referendum. They will be Ken Clarke, John Gummer, David Curry and Ian Taylor who are probably the last real pro European tories in the House. The vile John Bercow will also vote against allegedly because he opposes referenda but his real motivation is sucking up to labour MP's in the hope of being the next speaker.

The referendum amendment was defeated by 311 votes to 248 which is a bit closer than expected. I would say that 40-50 Lab and Lib Dem members must have voted in favour.

Its things like this that make my blood boil. All three parties pledged referendums in 2005, and now we find them discarding the manifesto's they stood on. And worse of all, this from the PM thats taken control of our country without being given a mandate by any bloody body. The whole thing stinks.

A second amendment, moved by Labour MP Ian Davidson, which would have provided a referendum on the treaty and allowed the government to add a second question (such as the UK's membership of the EU) has also been defeated. This time 311 to 247.
The only amusing thing today was watching William Hague put up another good display and David Miliband put up such a pitiful performance. At one point Ken Clarke intervened on him to say he would support the government even though he (Miliband) was making such a mess of defending the governments position.

How will this play out at the general election Karde? Will UKIP stay away from key marginals, where the sitting Labour/Lib-Dem MP has voted to ratify the treaty without a referendum? If so, then surely it'll gift the Tories quite a few marginals?

UKIP will only give a free run to MP's who sign up to the Better Off Out campiagn (see my signature for a link). Every other seat will be contested subject to candidates and funds being available.

Well on that basis, shouldn't you give the Liberal's a free run? They are offering an In or Our referendum, after all.
