I can't say much more about the Lib Dem's than what one of their own activists has to say.

Suddenly you realise you are not so different after all

This is what the tories should play on at the next general election. On billboards, party broadcasts and leaflets the issue should be trust. They promised you a referendum. They lied. It might just sneak undeserving opposition into power.

According to Peter Oborne in last Saturdays Daily Mail David Cameron is going to try and present himself as the "anti establishment" candidate. The candidate that will reform Parliament and bring power to the people. I would think, given the way Labour and Liberals have broken their manifesto commitments today, TRUST will also play a big part in David Cameron's strategy.

According to the BBC (who often get these things wrong) 29 Labour MP's and 13 Lib Dem MP's voted for a referendum. In the end only 3 tory MP's voted against. Ian Taylor abstained (he may have been absent) and John Bercow did actually vote yes (he had previously said he would vote no).

It was actually 28 Labour MPs who rebelled. The BBC as usual got it slightly wrong as they counted Robert Wareing who has resigned the Labour whip (and possibly his party membership) after his local party deselected him for the next general election. In all 15 Lib Dem MPs voted for a referendum as two of them who abstained on the tory amendment voted for Ian Davidson's amendment.

The more telling vote for me came a little later on when Bill Cash moved new clause 9 which stated "Notwithstanding any provision of the European Communities Act 1972, nothing in this Act shall affect or be construed by any court in the United Kingdom as affecting the supremacy of the United Kingdom Parliament." The tory line was to abstain but backbenchers were given a free vote. Despite this only 48 members of parliament (40 tories, 6 DUP, 1 LD*, 3 ind) voted to assert that parliament was supreme. Remember this the next time someone complains about UKIP hurting the 'euro-sceptic' tories.

On a brighter note I understand that the chances of a by election in Cannock Chase have diminished as Tony Wright is now out of hospital.

* The LD MP in question cast a bottle vote abstention voting both 'aye' and 'no'

Incidentally G-Fett where you aware that this May the last surviving Labour councillor on Daventry District Council is up for re-election?

You could soon be living in a Labour free district.

LOL! I didn't know that. I knew the situation for Labour was dire on DDC, but I didn't know they were down to just one member. laugh

Which seat is being contested?

Indeed it is that dire. At present there are 35 conservatives, 2 lib dems and 1 lab member of the council.

The sole labour member is Cllr Janet McCarthy who represents Braunston ward.

The two Lib Dems are Catherine and Brian Lomax both of whom represent Barby and Kilsby ward. Catherine is up for re-election this year so the the tories could have 37 of the 38 seats by May 2nd.

Back in the mid and late 90's Labour actually ran Daventry Council. Unfortunatly for them, they got themselves into a terrible financial crisis, where millions of pounds of public money went missing (it never was accounted for, as far as I'm aware) and ever since then, their fall has been spectacular!

Is Long Buckby going to be voting this year?

I think so but I will have to check.

EDIT: Actually the answer is no. It's a two member ward and you voted in 2006 & 2007 so this is your off year.

EDIT 2: While checking that out I noticed that in 1999 when you had all out elections following boundary changes the tories regained control of the council (which had been NOC since 1995) but Long Buckby actually elected 2 labour councillors shame_on_you

Here's an interesting article comparing Mrs Thatcher with todays political class, and exploring why the nations affection for her may be growing.

Its always hard to work out what the government is actually doing during a Budget, but as far as I can tell;

Growth is down.
Borrowing is up.
Taxes are up.
Inflation is up.

In other words, the outlook, for all the bluster about stability and prudence, is pretty grim!

A fait assesment?

You forgot to mention that at the end of a decade or more of prosperity that we haven't saved anything.
