Yeah, I saw this. What a humiliation!
I read that even in Labour's nadir year of 1983 Labour polled 4000 votes in Henley, this time they only just got over 1000!
And a complete let-down for the Lib-Dems as well. Seems the Tories have finally got on top of the Lib-Dems bye-election machine.

I felt a great disturbance in the force. As if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror. Then were suddenly silenced. The Saga returns; August 15th 2008.

Far more important for Labour will be the Glasgow East by election. Defeat there would be inconceivable and could well finish off Brown.
Glasgow remains a Labour city to the core and East is their second safest seat in the city and 25th safest nationwide. The bulk of the seat is grim inner city estates. Over half the population have no qualifications at all and less the 8% are graduates. The SNP will give it a go but Labour should hold even in such dire times.

The SNP certainly are giving it a go in Glasgow East and the result could be closer than expected. That being said I still think that Labour will hold on.

Results going to come in tonight? Will the SNP pull off a political earthquake or can Labour hold on?

Here we go again.......Brown is under the cosh now! A good victory for the SNP (and another worrying blow for the Union imo).

He was on the news tonight saying he's getting on with the job, etc... The same old mantra. Surely Labour can't tolerate this much longer?

If Labour want at least a chance in the next election, they need to call a vote of no confidence, and soon.

It said on the news earlier that senior Labour figures are now openly discussing Browns removal (though no plan of action has yet been decided upon)
It seems as though things are moving though. Will Brown survive until the party conference at the end of September?

Brown will still be PM by the end of the summer imo. I'm not sure Labour will have the nerve to replace their leader again so soon without going to the country for a mandate.

My timetable, if they do decide to get rid of Gord would something like;
Brown is told to go around November/December
An acting leader takes over sometime around Christmas, while a new leader is elected by the Labour Party.
New leader is announced and becomes PM sometime around March.
Budget in April.
General election called early May.
Genral election held in June, with the local and european elections.
If that timetable is accurate, you may need to start a new Big Year For British Politics thread at the New Year, DA.

Rumour has it that David Miliband is going to resign as Foreign Secretary. I have never seen the appeal in him but with things so bad labour MPs might decide that anyone is better than Brown.

Is it me, or has Prime Minister Brown slightly vanished? The government hasn't made a statement about Georgia, at the moment. UK and Russian relations are somewhat frayed at the moment, but I don't see why Brown should just vanish...?

Well Gord has come out and called for Russia to withdraw from Georgia Only about 7 days too late!
Meanwhile Dave has gone one better. Apparently he'll be flying into Tiblisi for negotionations with Georgian officials tomorrow!
