Long story about how this happened...
http://youtube.com/watch?v=O4By5CyadqQ
Full report on my blog at http://theknightshift.blogspot.com/2007/07/full-report-jedi-knights-prison-stripes.html along with photos, videos and other stuff.
Good news is: it must have worked because by 8 votes for and 3 against, we got the board to rescind their earlier vote for school uniforms (the initial vote was based on very flawed - maybe even fraudulent - data).
So if you ever wanted to see a Jedi Knight address a group of politicians and win them over, for real, this may be as close as it's ever gonna get

Any situation involving a school board having to rescind its policies is usually a very, very good thing.

Hopefully this positive result will happen for the Pastafarian kid that's doing the same thing.

Way to go... its the sort of thing I'd have fought for if any of my schools ever were going to go to the uniformed side.

Uniforms are effective in a lot of the educational institutions that already have a very good understanding of what education is supposed to really be about.
The educational institution in this county is not one of those.

How very not surprising. I suppose your next trick is telling us that water is wet?
Onto the topic, congrats for assisting in getting this overturned. Now, the real big question: did you really need the Jedi robes?

C'mon, showmanship is always part of effective public speaking. Or at least, can be.
It's the Pope headwear question:
"Would the Pope have nearly as big an audience if he was wearing a John Deere hat?"-Dogbert.
Anyway, it rocks they managed to beat this. School uniforms now are like slapping bandaids on an internal hemmorhage.

From a public school perspective they have no place. Its basically telling people they should spend a whole bunch of money on certain clothes just so they're allowed to attend school. Moderate dress codes are one thing, but uniforms are another.

I do think that there is a place for uniforms in schools, and I think it would lead to a whole lot less money being spent on clothing, and would be a great equalizer for young minds. Of course once you are an adult I don't think they are as appropriate or helpful, but I would agree that our school system has a lot more problems than what kids are wearing.

The biggest problem with this case though isn't whether or not uniforms are a great idea. What happened was, the board voted for the uniforms when it should have known that the data it was basing its decision on - namely the results of this so-called "survey" - was bogus. If the parents and students want the uniforms, that would be fine. But they didn't want the uniforms and the board insisted for an awful long time that they did want them.
The superintendent did a very wise thing in calling for another survey: one that was MUCH more scientific. And this one indicated that there wasn't all that support for the uniforms at all. And several of the board members who had previously voted for the uniforms realized this and chose to rescind their earlier vote on Monday night.
BTW, I was on the phone with one of the board members last night who changed their minds. And she said she and another board member (that I've known for most of my life) had talked about how I must have been positively bonkers to be wearing a getup like that in the extreme heat (we're talking 95 degrees) outside the building for the hour before the meeting. "That must have been four layers of clothing!" "Ummm it was actually five counting the cloak" I told her.
She said it's a miracle that I didn't keel-over dead from this stunt

How does that lead to less money spent on clothing, exactly?
Like, when I was in those levels of school that could've had uniforms... I didn't spend much money on clothes as it was. However, if they required uniforms, I would have had to spend a fair bit more money in buying the uniforms.

Well, I didn't have uniforms, but one of our "rival" sister schools, which was prviate did.
The way I understood it was that the school required a set uniform fee that everyone paid, but then issued vouchers that were taken to approved uniform stores. Usually, the voucher discount meant that the students could really stock up.. (ie-everyone had to pay a $100 uniform fee, but then got back $300 dollars in uniforms)
I'm not saying every school operates their uniform requirement this way, but then I haven't paid much attention to the overall uniform issue.

A couple bits here... first of all, private schools totally are a seperate equation. I let private schools do far more than public schools.
Anyway Mr44, where did the money for the other 200 in uniforms come from? Isn't that coming from the money being paid to the private school in this case, or tax money that could otherwise go to purposes more directly addressing education in the case of public schools?
