Speaking of successors, I read that is the person Putin appoints resigns, there would have to be a new election and Putin would be eligible to run again.

What's the problem? Putin is excellent President, we like him a lot. It's great that he wants to be our Prime Minister.
Aren't you glad for us?

Wouldn't Premier, or Party First Secretary, Putin sound better?

Well, personally I like "The Emperor", it certainly sounds the best.
But seriously, tell me, what is the difference between "Prime Minister" (which in Russian sounds like "Premier Minister") and Premier?
I'm slightly confused about the meaning of all the english words.
I know you people can tell me all your lectures, so please, do.
Ender Sai, you know, I sort of missed you. Well, since our last discussion, remember?
Best wishes!

I was more hinting at the titles we gave Soviet leaders in the past, Sherilyn.

Call me Shery. I think we're friends now (and there'll be less typing errors when you type the shorter version of my username).
Were there any other interesting titles of Soviet leaders (or their wives) that I didn't know?
I believe we still have that misunderstanding because english is not my native lanuage, and the remains of "soviet <<how did you call it?>> propaganda" in my head, that they taught me at school isn't helping either.
Ender Sai, I guess you're only interested in russian politics, are you? Do you watch figure skating? Did you like the Russians during Olympics? My all time favorite is Eugene Plushenko. He is amazing.
Best regards,
~Shery~

I'm simply amazed that Putin is allowed to run for PM after being President. It just seems a way in which a politician with less-than-honourable intentions can work the system to make it a dictatorship in all but name.

Spasiba, Sheri.
I used to be far more into Russian culture and whatnot but this was many years ago and my interests shifted south to Asia.
However, we could happily discuss Sergei Eisenstein or Prokofiev if you want.
In fact, a few days ago I watched a fairly interesting Russian film, Burnt by the Sun. Have you seen it?

ES, you made me smile in the real life right now as I read this. Honestly!

Oh. It's so ancient. My mother would discuss it with you, gladly.

If the Russian title of the film is "Utomlennije solncem" (a movie about how a young man from KGB (I think?) goes to see the girl he once loved, and then he arrests her husband (a hero of war), and then her husband is taken to prison or to concentration camp, and the young man kills himself), if that is the movie you'r talking about, then yes, I have seen in. I heard there's a second film made, but as the actors are not the same as in the first movie, I didn't watch the second part. I can't imagine characters of this film without Oleg Menshikov and Ingeborga Dapkunaite.
If you are talking about some other film, I am sorry for misunderstanding.
And sorry for all the typing errors and grammar mistakes. I just woke up half an hour ago.
Best wishes!

That'st he one, Sheri. Nikita Mikhalkov plays Kotov, a Bolshevik hero. Oleg Menshikov is Mitya - and brilliantly so - who is the young Stalinist who interrupts Kotov's family summer with, basically, Stalin's purge.

Indeed. In this film Stalin is not shown, only his deeds are depicted as great evil.
Do you like Oleg Menshikov?
Did you watch any other films with him? There are many movies with him, that I like a lot.

I must admit it is a very clever move by Putin. I had expected him to try and retain power somehow but wasn't sure what he would do. Simply putting a crony up as President for 4 years was an option but being completely away from power for that time would have cost Putin control of the political machine if his crony had become a little more independant minded. As PM he will retain some of his political power, make it more difficult for his succesor to follow his own path and will be well placed to return to the Presidency in 4 years time.
