a grocery store will always be included but the idea of a corner store allows people to walk or to get more convenient items that allows them to stay inside their neighborhood. Not drive to it.

I am unsure if I understand correctly. THere is a corner store on every corner? confused Have we become that lazy of a society that this needs to take place. Futhermore, whatever happend to making a gorcery list, taking it to the store and buying your goods for the week, two or a month? Now we are incapable of making lists and need to have a store on every corner..or almost every corner because its far easier to do that then write down the food we need and to plan out our meals.

By the goddess we as a nation are lazy peices of crap.

I forgot a grocery store but the corner market would probably suffice.

most people run out of things and sometimes dont want to travel for a gallon of milk. Thats why they are also called convenience stores. because they are a convenience in your neighborhood. Also, they provide a place for adults and kids to walk to for various things like Candy and soda.

imagine running a mile around your neighborhood and then when you are in the middle of it getting into your car to buy a litre of water. No way you would do that. Instead you would plan your route around the convenience store.

I guess I am of the mind set of where I plan things out. If I run out oh well. I'll get it next time I go to the gorcery store. I dont NEED things now. I just think its a sad commentary on Americans.

In fact I don't even know who lives next door to me because they either don't go to church or are assigned to a different LDS ward.

Mate, ever tried just knocking on the door, introducing yourself and inviting them round for dinner?

While that is a throwaway comment it does serve to bring up the main problem in society and why a sense of community is dying - noone talks to their neighbours anymore. What a community needs is something that can bring the people together, give them a common cause. In the past this function was filled by the church but in todays multicultural society that just isn't the case. So what is the answer? in many cases it still is the church, in others it may be a sports club, or a particular charity cause, each area must find it's own solution.

As a follow on to that, it is therefore necessary that anyone moving to an area finds out what the common denominator is and get involved. Personally I moved to Ireland from Britain four years ago. The area I now live in is a big hurling area. Before I moved, I only had a vague idea of what hurling was, some mad psycho-hockey game played only in Ireland. Tomorrow I know that I will be in the pub with the rest of the village, shouting for Waterford as they try to make the all-Ireland final for the first time in decades.

In summary to have a community you need a focal point, what that is varys from area to area, but if you are there it is up to you to get involved.
