We already have universal healthcare. It's called the Emergency Room. They won't turn you away. So, considering how much money we already spend on emergencies that would have been alot less expensive if people could have been preventatively treated before hand...

My main fear with universal health care (which I, in theory, support, but am not sure that it would work well in practice without lots of regulation and strict rules from the outset) is that the priority system on who gets what care will NOT be based on personal need. I'm afraid that once more that young and middle-aged adults without children will be passed up for health care of children, parents, and the elderly. For example, let's say that for non-urgent care there is an average 4-week waiting period between making the appointment and going in. Somebody's kid gets very sick in the interim, and dies. Suddenly people are rallying FOR THE CHILDREN and now patients under 18 must be seen within 2 weeks. Well, guess who's going to be waiting even longer? That's right. Us expendable 18+ folks, who are actually paying the bulk of the taxes.

Unviersal health care is far better than not having it, but it could lead to poor care and poor distribution of care unless these things are heavily regulated and it is written into the law that there can be no discrimination whatsoever except in terms of urgency of care for a particular condition, and that age, parental status, race, sex, etc. are not allowed to be taken into account except where they have significant effect on treatment outcome and how quickly a condition must be treated (i.e. chicken pox is more likely dangerous to adults than children so care would be more urgent; overdoses of medication may be more dangerous to some populations than others; etc.) for that patient's health. Not because said patient claims to have more reason than others (work, family, etc.) for being treated more quickly.

A conversation on Dathomir:
Welk: My daughter did that... I am blameless. I'm not even armed.
Jacen: And you just let her do whatever she wants?
Welk: You're new here, aren't you?
