Nah, it would probably be that their women are neither made of plastic, nor partially constructed by surgery, nor with partying daughters that the Batmobile could fit into.

tongue wink

On a more serious note, my brother's in-laws are in town from Europe, and they're having a field day with shopping here.

Their money is going a long way here.

Nope, I live in Santa Clarita. Its a city of approaching 200,000 less than 30 miles north of los angeles. I'm 30-40 minutes (depending on traffic) from L.A. and less than an hour from downtown (although no one goes there). To the west side, I can get there in half an hour. The San Fernando valley is about 30 minutes. And all of those include that the drive to the freeway is about 10 or 15 minutes from me.
(Using househunt.org) You can get houses in Van Nuys, about 20 minutes closer to everything from where I am, for not much more. More condos, but there's still houses available.

And would you live in Van Nuys? I lived in Van Nuys for 6 years. If you can buy a house in Van Nuys for $300k it's either in gangland or it's 500 sq ft. with no yardage. As a side note though, Van Nuys is the porn capital of the US. More porn is made in Van Nuys than anywhere else in the valley. Or so I have been told.

Look, I've been scouting the housing/condo market for a couple years now waiting for my chance to get in. The housing market is bad. You do realize that in order to pay for that $300k house you have to clear over $100k a year, right? Unless you have a huge down payment. While it may be possible, there are questions of quality of life. Do I want to buy a house where I might get shot? Uhm nope. I live in an OK area of Long Beach. Not flashy like Belmont Shore, not the ghetto like Snoop Dogg. The house across the street from me is $725K about 1700 sq ft. The house down the street is $1.3 million about 2000 sq ft, with a guest cottage. This is a run of the mill area and more representative of what you would get for $250k in the middle of nowhere cowpoke, middle America.

In anycase, it is a tangent to the topic at hand which is who has the best standard of living. I do not think America compares to some of our Euro counterparts. Sorry. Trust me, I love this country, I work for this country, but I am also very aware that we don't have it as good as others.

Since you guys are being brats: Homes that sold in California median price - Jun. 07: $594,260 (Source: C.A.R.)

Right on target.

I've always heard Chatsworth for the porn.

And the new houses seem to be these gigantic 2 story houses. I'm basing, in part, off my house which is 3 bedroom, 2 bath and about 400,000. It was just built in the late 70s and is dwarfed by these new houses getting built.

Its still more expensive here than most areas of the U.S., but I just contest that a simple house fits the numbers you'd put forward chibiangi.

Ridiculous costs, yes, but not as much as you said.

You're 22 and own a $400k home? Uhm, hook me up with that job.

I'm basing my assumptions of what I can find in my area and my own searches. You can disagree, but $500k is about average for a home. happy

nope, live with family at 22 cuz, where's a college kid gonna aford a house?

i'd just say that when you allow a little bit of travel time, and not these new bigger houses getting built, they can be affordable. I just know that most new houses, up here anyway, are probably double the size of the house I'm in.

No, I'd say she's pretty accurate.

The median home price in California is near 600,000--and I'd imagine that's for a 1,500 square foot home (dividing that price by a 400/sq. foot median). That means that half of all homes are less than that and half are more than that--generally, you wouldn't want to be in house that cost less than that.

This is an average price--in a run down area, the price per square foot is 150--so that house would cost $225,000. On the other end, in my area, the price per square foot is around $1,400 per square foot. That'd give that same house a cost of $2,100,000.

Keep in mind, though, that better areas have disproportionately better access to services, education, society, culture, entertainment, et al..

I could not imagine living in a country that didn't provide heath care to its citizens, or the debt I'd have because of it. cry
I'll toss Canada into the equation, though simply for our health care system and our laws protecting workers, ensuring paid time off for workers, etc.....I don't believe our take home pay is probably that great compared to similar nations, but our other benefits certainly do add up in a hurry.

Does the USA have no law giving employees paid time off each year?

No such law for paid time off.
Which is something I personally agree with. If an employer offers that then fine but I don't think it should be forced, both in that I think its too much gov't involvement in the employer-employee relationship and I don't like the harm it would cause small businesses.

Also because the 2 systems don't directly compare. You also have to take into account the US's dual federal/state division of power. Canada has state divisions as well, but the relationship isn't the same as the US.

For example, there's no federal requirement that says companies have to offer vacation at all, but quite a few states require employers to offer time off under state law. Minimum wage is another example. The federal government sets the basic rate, but many states require a minimum that is higher than the federal level.

Market forces usually dictate the rest. Even starter jobs offer benefits within reason. A student who works fastfood only 12 hours a week to earn money after school isn't going to get 2 weeks of paid vacation and insurance, but a full time employee at the same place probably would.
