I still don't understand why you or anyone else likes it there DM, but to each his own. I do miss the food though. I guess if you are Catholic and can afford the private school it wouldn't be as bad as I remember it.
Oh and normally I would rail against gated communities, but in your case I can completely understand and don't blame you one bit. If I lived in a third world country I'd want one too.

Well, my father's side of the family has been here since the late 1690's - early 1700's with the first French settlers.
I am Roman Catholic, as are many in South Louisiana. The influence of Catholicism is strong here, even with the Mardi Gras festivities that are going on right now... which end at midnight on Ash Wednesday on the start of Lent.
I will be sending my children to Catholic private schools (you basically have to, because the public schools are atrocious). There is much not to like, the corruption, the ineptitude, the ignorance, and so on.... especially if you're not from here. There is an ongoing joke from locals that just like Texas is 'like a whole other country', Orleans Parish is 'like a Third World country'.
I do favor gated communites, because of the rules involved. People have to take care of their stuff and not leave it a mess. They can't park their cars on the street, on their lawns or have huge boats or RVs out in front of their houses. I've lived in a regular suburban community here for seven years with atrocious neighbors, and I can't wait to build our new house on our lot and get out of this particular neighborhood.
My wife and I have our families here (except my brother, who moved to Georgia with his wife and son), so we have everyone around for holidays and stuff like that. I like the culture here, the laissez-faire type of attitudes, that are significantly different than the rest of the South. New Orleans is perhaps the most European of American cities, with heavy French and Spanish influences. It's an eclectic mix of that, Central American, and other cultures. North of Baton Rouge is considered to be part of the 'rest of the South', where we tend to think of ourselves as within our own little sociocultural niche distinct from the 'Bible Belt' South.
But, it's not just the food culture and the other cultural aspects of this place make it unique and endearing, but it's just simply that it's home to me.
