I have this hate-hate relationship with 19th century German literature. I spent perhaps 6 months of my life doing absolutely nothing but reading it. I'm never getting that time back. Not ever.
Hegel borders on the unreadable in any language. The important thing for communism though is what Marx took away from his own misreading of Hegel. And in any case, the Bolsheviks considered the Hegel critique important to an understanding of Marxism.

Jabba, the quote is often just presented as "opiate for the masses" and without the rest of it, it comes across as a witty one liner used to denounce religion.
Even the explanation I gave still makes it clear that religion isn't something Marx supports as a communist principle, but rather as a means for "dulling" the proletariat during their struggle. They still struggle against religion, they just don't do it openly.
PRENN: Hawks would be conservative Russian nationalists with a strong military background or military bent, whereas liberals would be centrist, maybe left-leaning, moderate progressives. So, liberals in the proper sense.
