Sir Ed Hilary passes away
For those who may not have heard, Sir Edmund Hilary, the New Zealander who was the first to successfully climb Mt. Everest, passed away at 0900 NZ Time this morning at the age of 88.

To be blunt, Malkie, from the few things I read about him, he doesn't seem the type to make a fuss about himself. I'd say it was others who made the fuss.
To the extent you're implying others made it there first, well, Mallory may have, though there's no way of proving whether he did or not, and dying before you get down to tell everyone what you did is sort of an auto-loss. It's very doubtful (though not impossible, as Messner showed) anyone made up before then without supplemental oxygen.
Regardless, he deserves our admiration for the work he did in Nepal afterwards, establishing schools, hospitals, etc for the sherpas.
