Not sure what I'm going to do with the other $295.75

Don't you mean $365.75?

Since I'm married with 2 kids, $1800 big ones for me! Oh, I'll stimulate that economy for ya...

I was looking at first quarter results for some of the country's big retailers. Aside from the oil industry, the biggest beneficiary of the stimulus checks is apparently going to be Wal-Mart.

Isn't that logical? The economy slows down, there is talk of recession.
Everyone suddenly feels the need to "squeeze every nickel till the buffalo hollers"

So i would expect a big boom for the big discount chains and for Ebay sellers as well.

A lot of analysts are now saying that if oil prices stay around $130 or go higher, it will pretty much nullify any effect the stimulus checks might have had.... worried

Yep. Wal-Mart's in a good position. They no longer have to try to figure out how to go upscale to compete with Target. Target's in the crapper, and the discount retailers that are the most downscale win.

Honestly, I haven't shopped at Target for years. Why? Because they simply don't give me a good value for my money.

Back when Target first opened near my home, it was a choice between Target and KMart. That was a clear no brainer. Target won by a clear margin, because the store was clean, better organized, and the staff generally of a higher caliber. (I got carded at the KMart once for buying root beer!)

However, the KMart went out of business, and was replaced with a WalMart. Between the two, they were both more or less evenly matched on cleanliness and organization, and while the staff was generally better at the Target, the WalMart offered both lower prices (DVDs for $15 at WalMart vs. $20 at Target), and I could use the self checkout lanes at WalMart (where I can go faster than most trained cashiers).

Most of the things that I would buy from either one are commodity items, which would be of the same quality at either one. I don't go there for my home furnishings (although I did wind up buying some curtains at WalMart once). I occasionally buy minor kitchen-related things there, but even then the quality difference is negligible, especially compared to the price difference.

WalMart simply offers the better value between the two.

This is, hands down, the funniest thing I've ever read on the JCC.

There was a report on ABC/Yahoo a few days ago about Wal-Mart demanding that companies use smaller boxes and less packaging so they could reduce the amount of space used per truck, to keep the profit margins the same.
They are also trying to start a buy direct system to cut out as many middlemen as they can.

This past weekend I went to a Dollar Tree with my mother, and i couldn't believe how different it was, or how different i remembered it.
They had lots of useful things, at the dirt cheap price of $1.

I needed some bungee cords, i would have easily spent $10 at any other store, but there I paid 2 dollars.
I think this type of dirt cheap discount store, most of which only accept cash or debit, (to avoid credit card fees)
are about to explode.

I agree. Driving around my area, I've seen at least two new Dollar Generals going up, and Dollar Tree just opened in our mall.

Wal-Mart demanding that companies use smaller boxes and less packaging so they could reduce the amount of space used per truck.

Reducing packaging of consumer goods is one of the biggest opportunities available in the U.S. for energy and resource conservation and, as an ancillary benefit of course, fighting inflation.

At the grocery store and Wal-Mart, we often pay as much for consumer goods packaging as we do for the item itself, particularly for lower cost items.

The big discount retailers can lead the way on this. Wal-Mart in particular gets it. Their relentless focus on cost control is going to continue to pay dividends. They are turning to areas of cost control where they are being hardest hit: energy and transportation. Wal-Mart can force energy conservation and packaging reduction through the entire system, from the retail store all the way back to the original supplier.

Target doesn't know how to compete with this. They do branding, and branding isn't going to help them in this environment.

This morning there was a report on Yahoo/ABC about how the smaller stores like
Family Dollar etc. are getting the big boom, many people live within walking distance to one, and are choosing to walk instead of drive. So this could be bad for the local shopping malls.

I noticed this week that many of the milk jugs have changed shape to boxier shape, the cap on top is now in-line with the profile, most likely to fit more jugs in a container and on a truck.

I wonder if Coke products will soon lose their trademark contours?

How much longer till I can get one of these at the local Farmers Market?

I've also read that many Motorsports shops can't keep scooters in stock, they just keep selling out.

So now it looks like the Stimulus check has helped, many small franchise shops like Family Dollar, and most likely helped pay for scooters for many people.
