Tim Russert Dies: Aged 58

I'm just reading this now on CNN. I watched this man every Sunday on NBC, and in my opinion he was the most professional and unbiased personality in the game. Of all the journalists of all the active networks, he was #1.
He had a heart attack and died today. I'm completely flabbergasted.

I was on my way home, and I heard the news on the radio. I was shocked.
My own father died at a young age from a similar type of situation, and I can empathize what his family must be going through right now.

As I just posted, another NBC star died young several years ago, that being David Bloom. He's who I flashed back to when I first heard about Russert's death.

Yeah, this was sudden. Not only are the Presidential debates going to suck now, but I think the last link to the old, professional journalists was severed as well. Russert has been host of Meet the Press for almost 20 years, correct?

Well, Tom Brokaw is still around, and does stuff on occasion for NBC.

Not the last link in terms of people alive, but maybe people actively working as Journalist.
I mean, there's Seymore Hersh, but he does tend to have the "living in a basement with a tinfoil hat" quality sometimes.
As far as professional journalism goes now, they're all foreign correspondants like Amonpur and Michael Ware.

Shocking and sad. Tim Russert didn't know me, but I felt like I knew Tim Russert for years, through his great books and his excellent journalistic work.
It's a shock to the system for me, just because I know the area around the NBC Washington studios pretty well, having relatives living in that area. He died at the hospital rather close to there. I can imagine that ambulance pulling away and screaming down Nebraska Avenue.
(I'm also surprised to learn he hosted Meet The Press longer than Lawrence Spivak, who seemed to have been doing it since the Grover Cleveland administration.)
Don't wait to take that trip to Italy, that's the lesson here.

Yeah, KW, I meant in terms of what Gonk posted above.
I didn't mean to diminish the other guys still around. The grandfather of true journalism- Walter Cronkite is still alive, but has been retired for quite a while now.
Bill Curtis hosts more documentaries, ditto for Brokaw.
Interestingly, there's a movement to get Tom Brokaw to run for President, or at least Senator. Although I think once you've been on side of politics, it would be difficult to cross the line to the other.

It's a bit eerie that right around the time Russert died, I was thinking to myself while on the bus that I ought to check MSNBC.com as to whether or not it had the upcoming guests for MTP listed yet, and was thinking back to last week's show.

Looks like I wasn't alone: the very first thing I thought of after seeing the headline was "Damn, the debates are gonna SUCK now."

I watched this past Sunday's show twice (once alone, and again later that day with someone else), and I can say that it was a fitting final show for him. He had many of his colleagues together for probably the first time all year, as they dissected the past primary ("It is over", he said in the opening voiceover) and previewed the general election campaign.
I wish I'd started watching at a younger age, but of course there wasn't a netcast until recently and it airs at 7:00 am on Sundays here. I got to watch it often this year, and I'm glad I did.

No one's mentioned it yet, but probably my all-time favorite Tim Russert interview was the now-infamous one with David Duke, back when he was running for governor of Louisiana. When Duke claimed that he was not running on race, but on the state's economy, Russert just asked him to name the top three employers in the state.
Duke was not able to do so, and was never again a serious contender.

What a tragedy.
I feel so horrible for his family. At least he got to go on vacation with his son to celebrate his graduation.
He was way too young.
Peace,

So sad. It'll be weird to have an election without him.

There are so few news people left on tv who aren't crazed ideologues. If they aren't populist pandering buffoons like Lou Dobbs, or relentlessly self-promoting posers like Anderson Cooper, or dumb-downed conservatives like Glenn Beck, then they're lucky to be on television at all. Russert was just plain lucky that there was still room for him on television in that kind of company.
