What made you choose your religion?

RE: What made you choose your religion?
I am not playing favorites, merely putting forward the intent of the thread. Atheism is not a religion, nor is being an agnostic. The question asked, "What made you choose your religion" implies that you presently have a religion, not that you strayed or denied a religion.
If you want to talk about why you chose to be an agnostic or atheist, try the Non-Religion Sanctuary. That's what it is there for.
Discussion closed.
Problem? PM me. Anymore posts along this line will further derail the thread and lead to a warning, then a ban.

Atheism is technically a religion. Religion is defined as a set of beliefs, so in that sense, atheism is indeed a religion.
Just food for thought.

It really depends on who you ask. I know of one atheist who says that it isn't a religion but he does concede that it does have some religious aspects. However, for the sake of discussion and simplicity, I suggest that we just keep this thread limited to discussing how people chose their religious beliefs or decided to not believe in anything at all. Debating it here would be futile.

Morning... Just a thought but, maybe we would be better served by using the term "belief system" instead of "religion". I would hate to see this thread close. By using "belief system" you can include all froms, even athiest and agnostic. These many not be concidered a religion by some but, but they are definately "belief systems" and are as valid as the rest.

I started out as a Buddhist because my Mum follows Buddhism, but gradually I have begun to look at other religions in an open light, done some comparisons, and decided that I do want to be a Buddhist out of my own free will, and not just because I'm following my mother. I'm staying with Buddhism because I feel that it most generally reflects my feelings and the way I approach matters.

Nicely done Valiowk!
I agree with Java_Jedi. As long as everyone is being civil and putting forth the reason that they choose to believe the way they do, I feel that this is an interesting topic to read, and that it opens everyone's eyes to all points of views (of course I do because I'm one who doesn't follow a "religion"
)
At any rate, as long as it has been going the way it has, I'll keep returning to read what others have to say.

Athiesm is not a religion!
Athiesm is a lack of belief in theism hence A-thiesm, athiests have many differen't beliefs that do not stick to any rules or guidelines (or bible of any kind)
Perhaps your thinking of Secular Humanism which does have religous aspects (but is still entirely free of spirituality)

luigi... I was make a statement in regard to keeping the posting open to all... hence the "belife system" idea. Many athiests I know consider it a belief system... they believe in the scientific facts. The question posed is basiccally why you decided to believe as you do... wiether or not it is in a god.

IMO It's not really a leap of faith to "believe" in facts, though.
Water is wet, this i know. It's unnecessary to have to believe. I guess the problem with this subject is what consitutes a "fact"

Well, the majority of atheists believe in evolution, which a number of Christians consider to be just a belief system and not a collection of scientific facts. Can that count? :P
Seriously, I see no reason not to refer to atheism as a religion. Yes, technically, it means "without religion", but in reality, it often means as much to an atheist as a religious person's faith means to them. As long as we all stay civil - and try not to get offended by everyone else - I definitely think atheism is a valid response.

I don't expect anyone here to understand this...
I was forcibly and happily removed from an atheistic period in my life by an experience I've never quite been able to explain properly. Basically, I felt the physical presence of God. I've always been a Doubting Thomas, but that gave me the proof I needed. I wish I could say I've felt the same thing since then, but I can't.
I try not to put a label on my faith, or to subscribe to a specific cult. Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism... all of that is meaningless to me. All I have to believe in is Love and Truth, and that's good enough for me.

I was in love once, and one time while I was with her I felt some other, larger presence surrounding both of us. It felt as though that presence was happy, like it was trying to tell me that's what the human race was meant for: to love each other.
