Cyrogenic, I want to say up front - I appreciate your posts and all of your opinions; your writing is always interesting and well thought out and enjoyable to read - so I don't want what I am about to say be interpreted as a knock or anything -

But, as I read this post (which is great; I agree with most of it and was enlightened by parts of it), all I kept thinking was, "yes, but what does any of this stuff have to do with a film being enjoyable, on an emotional level?".

You see what I mean? Like, I respect the PT (immensely), but don't just simply enjoy it for some reason. And I think part of the reason must reside in GL’s paying particular attention to details such as these, while letting other details (of equal importance) fall by the wayside.

Also, the SW saga is not "constructed like a symphony." It's constructed like six movies that were made somewhat out of order.

They were created like a symphony. Certain motifs are played over and over in slightly varied arrangements.

I just think that's a way too highfalutin take on the movies. After all, sitcoms often repeat certain motifs and themes, but no one exalts them.

But in this case it's a very deliberate attempt to show the different sides to things. For example, the Separatists and the Rebels. They are both basically the same thing, but shown as both evil and good. The Separatists are trying to break away from what they view as the tyranny of the Republic, while the Rebels are trying to break away from the tyranny of the Empire.

It's also important to note that the Republic -is- the Empire when all is said and done.

I agree. I can't help but lol sometimes when folks use lofty terms to describe these movies. It's their right of course, but it would be too much for me to think of them that way.

I think in this vein the idea that Maul, Grievous, and Dooku are 'represented aspects of Vader' feels to me pointedly ridiculous; but it seems to flow along with the 'movie masterpiece' idea that many here are so fond of.

It's just not my cup of tea. coffee

Grievous at least represents cyborging in general.

( And Vader seems to have learned Dooku's lightsaber style, if Cloud City is anything to go by. tongue )

I too am a huge fan of Cryogenic and the thought he puts into every response. But regarding your respect for the PT yet you don't enjoy it for some reason...I understand that reaction. I continue to watch the PT more than the OT with one exception - RotS. In so many ways it is the best entry, yet I find it so wrenching to see Order 66 and the downfall of goodness, Anakin, the Jedi - everything - that I really don't "enjoy" it the way I should and could. In comparison, watching ANH is a lark which is why it was/is always so much fun but now, even more so. But for storytelling, I love those prequels.

^ For me personally, that last sentiment is more like "for story, you can't beat the prequels". I feel that the PT story itself was beyond great. Super great. But it's greatness somehow got lost in the telling.

Storytelling in my mind goes to SW and ESB.

A mixed bag, this Star Wars saga is... silly

Regarding the original question, the things that grate the most on my senses are the (I'm guessing) unintentionally comical Jabba’s Palace, the Ewoks and most of the PT. There are some good ideas in the PT, but the bulk of the movies and how they were made let down the few good ideas that were there. Compared to the OT, especially the dark and well thought out ESB, I find the PT to be infantile, badly thought out, forced and ineptly written and directed. Oh, and the wooden acting leaves a lot to be desired too.

In my opinion, the whole PT is a shadow in comparison to the burning star that is the OT. The PT is lacking greatly. Too much time was put into the CGI, the story could have been delivered so much more. It lacks the feeling of down and dirty, gritty realism and epic story awesomeness that we got in the OT.

Also, I LOATHE, absolutely LOATHE all the CGI nonsense added to the OT. The entire Jabba scene on Mos Eisley in the docking bay is just unrealistic. Big, bad, powerful crime lord takes the time to meander down to Mos Eisley spaceport to give Han a warning? Really? Are you kidding? rolling_eyes Not to mention he's clearly at the stage in his Hutt life where he requires a repulsor sled to move around.. raised_brow

And all those creatures and beings meandering in front of our heroes as they mind trick the Troopers is so unnecessary. I mean, call me CRAZY.. but I'd actually like to SEE the main characters in that scene. frustrated

And then of course there is the cantina scene. Oh the wonderful cantina scene. How perfectly glorious you were in the OT, how horribly awry you have gone. Solo shooting Greedo is the logical outcome of their encounter. Greedo was going to shoot him, it was obvious from his twitchy little mouth tongue it was going to happen. So Han was saving his skin by blowing Greedo away. There isn't any way that Greedo could have "missed" the shot at such close range. It does not make Han a cold-blooded killer or a monster. It was Han being Han; being the scruffy smuggler who looks out for number 1(who has to look out for number 1).

OH ALSO. Boba Fett's story being changed in the PT has to be one of the dumbest things ever concocted. Honestly, they dulled the brilliant star that was Boba by making him some other guys clone. rolling_eyes

Rabble rabble rabble, I could go on forever and I'll probably be back! >< lol

I for one actually love the Boba thing in the PT.

What I absolutely hate is the balcony scene in ROTS.

Oddly enough, considering how much I dislike a lot of the PT and especially the love story, I found the balcony scene cute. It was one of the few times the two of them actually had chemistry.

I've posted other gripes in this thread, but this one popped into my head just now. I hate the way Artoo was made into SuperDroid in the PT. Flying around with jets, igniting battle droids, playing catch with Obi-Wan, etc. The CGI was very obvious in spots as well. The Artoo I thought I knew would never have done those things. Threepio was truly dumbed down as well. All the silly one liners and constant whining. Threepio wasn't THAT bad in the OT.
