We Can Work it Out

A one night delay gives one of our favorite Master and apprentice teams a chance to talk out their
issues.

Exiting the Council chamber Obi-Wan turned to make towards his quarters. He?d managed to keep
his anger in check during the Council?s decision on the boy, but he felt if he did not get some space
now it would no longer be counted as a success.

He was stopped by a hand on his shoulder. ?Obi-Wan, wait.?

Turning on his heel, Obi-Wan eyed Qui-Gon?s hand with disdain before turning his gaze to his
Master?s face. ?Yes, Master Jinn?? he questioned. Anyone who had ever been caught in the middle
of an arguments between the Jinn/Kenobi team would know that they did not fight with angry words,
but with forced politeness.

?Padawan...,? he started, but Obi-Wan cut him off.

?I?m afraid you?ve confused me with someone else, Master Jinn. The apprentice you desire is behind
you,? Obi-Wan responded.

He saw Qui-Gon?s face cloud with his own stubbornness. ?I did not dismiss you, Padawan Kenobi.?

?I presumed from your statements in the Council that you had no further need for me,? he said, proud
that his voice showed none of his distress.

Qui-Gon opened his mouth to speak, but was halted by a swish of air and then the distinct and
familiar sound of a gimmerstick striking his boot. ?Speak with you I would, Master Qui-Gon.?

?Do you think this is the right time, my Master?? Qui-Gon said through gritted teeth.

Obi-Wan thanked the Force for Master Yoda. He was saved.

?Under repairs, the Queen?s ship is. Better time can you think of?? Master Yoda asked.

It was an act of will to keep a smug smirk from his face.

Yoda took Qui-Gon?s silence as an agreement. ?Glad that you agree I am, Master Qui-Gon. Obi-
Wan, watch after young Skywalker, he will.?

Traitor, Obi-Wan accused. As hurt and as angry as he was with Qui-Gon, he could not deny
Master Yoda. It was too deeply ingrained into him to obey the venerable Jedi Master.

?Yes, Master Yoda.? He cocked an eyebrow at Qui-Gon and returned his gaze pointed to the hand
held tightly on his shoulder. ?Excuse me Master Jinn, I?ll be escorting your charge to the dining hall.?

Qui-Gon moved his hand as though burned and Obi-Wan marched over to Anakin. ?Come with me,
please??

The boy looked up at Qui-Gon who gave a reluctant nod. Anakin followed him to the turbolift,
scuffing his feet on the carpet as he went. The boy was obviously not pleased with being stuck with
him.

The dining hall wasn?t as busy as it normally was, but there were a handful of Master/Padawan groups
scattered in pockets throughout the line of tables. Under normal circumstances, he and Qui-Gon
would be among them. A testament to how things could change so quickly, even long honored
traditions.

He gathered a plate for himself and Anakin. It was one of this favorites, nerf in a muja glaze and rice.
They sat away from the majority of people and while Anakin pushed his rice around, Obi-Wan poured
them water from the tap inside the table.

They ate in silence. Obi-Wan ate methodically, starting with his nerf before forking into his rice. He
paused occasionally to sip at the water, cleansing his palate. The boy ate in a chaotic way, mixing
the food together into a monstrosity.

Obi-Wan was nearly finished when the boy dropped his utensil and gazed up accusingly at him. ?Why
don?t you like me??

?I never said I didn?t.?

?You?re angry. And your fighting with Qui-Gon. About me,? the boy said in a rush. ?I?m not
stupid.?

The Jedi apprentice gave a bitter chuckle. ?Oh, Anakin. I do not dislike you. I hardly know you.?

?Then why are you and Qui-Gon fighting about training me??

Obi-Wan opened his mouth to give the first answer that came to mind; that it was against the code.
But Anakin hadn?t been raised in that atmosphere. The simple answers of a Jedi would seem harsh
and unfeeling, as Obi-Wan had moments ago. He thou

I concur. This is a good idea. That is a new twist on Qui-gon surviving. Obi-Wan is still going to train Anakin. Nicely done =D=

Sighs......I'm always happy to see a story where Qui-Gon survives! Many thanks for saving him! Here's hoping that they take care of a certain hidden Sith lord quickly! :D

?And perhaps you should get used to calling me Qui-Gon.?

I love stories where Qui-Gon lives! That was a great note to finish on, especially with Obi-Wan still doing the training.

Nice work! =D=

Excellent, a little turn at the melting pit and
Qui-Gons survives. He cuts his padawans braid

Thats the way it should have been.=D=

Lovely prose and the characterisation is spot-on. You address the faults of all three players instead of just concentrating on one, and resolve them nicely.

Good job. =D=

That was lovely

The talks between Obi-Wan and Anakin as well as Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan were just perfect

I wish it could have been this way in the movies. :_| :_|

Great job on this

Thanks. It's very nice. Much better then all the strife. Just see what a little talking can do.

Yeah, I'm of the belief that Anakin and Obi-Wan weren't meant to be Master and apprentice, they just had a lot of issues.

I'm considering it. Though I'm not sure how it would change.

Thanks.

It is from a Beatles song and really was the inspiration. Thanks.

Qui-Gon lives. Here's hoping.

Yes, it is interesting to see how they work things out.

I always missed that Qui-Gon didn't get to do that.

Thank you very much. Yeah, they all have issues and stuff to learn from each other.

It would have been so nice to see Qui-Gon pop up in the other films. I agree.

?Padawan? It seems I have remained your apprentice only by the good graces of the Council, Master
Jinn.?

?And you always strive to be in the good graces of the Council,? Qui-Gon growled.

Obi-Wan?s voice turned steely. ?When was the last time they left me without a foot to stand on??

?I believe you were nearly thirteen,? Qui-Gon shot back. He regretted the words as soon as the
passed his lips.

?There were reasons for that,? Obi-Wan ground out.

?Reasons you seemed to think I?ve forgotten.?

?Haven?t you? After twelve years, you?re ready to throw my goal, my dream away, on a whim,? Obi-
Wan bit out.

?On the will of the Force,? Qui-Gon defended.

?The Force is asking to forfeit my Knighthood for Anakin?s??

Sadly, Qui-Gon shook his head. ?No.?

?Then why? This is not like you. It?s reckless and pointless. Anakin won?t be ready to be an
apprentice for a few years yet. There was no need for you to rush ahead in the Council.?

?Anakin has the time, I feel I do not,? Qui-Gon all but yelled.

Obi-Wan paled, he stumbled as though struck and only managed to stay upright because his back
thumped into the wall. Qui-Gon had spoke with sincerity and Obi-Wan did not need their connection
to see the truth in that. ?What??

?I?ve felt it for a while now, the narrowing of my life,? Qui-Gon elucidated. ?Events have been
unfolding to that end for the entirety of this mission.?

Obi-Wan blinked, open fear a painful wound on his face. ?We.....we?ll change that. We?ll get
reassigned. We?ll ask for another Jedi team.?

?That?s not how it works, Padawan.?

A light dawned in Obi-Wan?s gaze. ?You weren?t going to tell me.?

?It wasn?t my intention, no. I meant to protect you from this.? He felt Obi-Wan?s anger like a solar
flare. ?Temper your feelings, Obi-Wan.?

?If you would temper your arrogance, Master,? Obi-Wan seethed. ?What have I done to make you
believe I need protecting? Not a season ago, we were more partners and friends than Master and
apprentice. Now it is as though we are at the beginning, with you not trusting me. I have not been
able to make a move without consulting you first.?

?Trust works both ways, Padawan. You have questioned me on my every decision, starting long
before Naboo.?

Oh, nicely done. I like the argument to start out - the icy politeness, Obi-Wan's trying to settle down and reassure Anakin.

=D=

This piece was magnificent! All of the interactions were canon worthy.

And you should really consider a continuation... it has such potential. :D
