Before - Legends Through Darkness (JA: Qui, Obi, others) [SPOILERS for some JA books]

A/N: The lines of Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan in ?Darkness? are from Jedi Apprentice: The Death of Hope. The word ?satya? (from the third ficlet title) means ?truth? in Sanskrit.

~Darkness~

Revenge. Deep inside, I am alarmed as the fierce desire takes hold. But for the first time in my life, I, Qui-Gon, feel utterly unable to resist it.

My padawan and the medics watch me, but I pay them no attention. I have focus only for the one lying on the cot at my side.

Tahl. A fellow Jedi. One I hold above all else. One I love. And she is dead. Dead! My heart pounds the word in an endless litany.

A hand on my shoulder draws me from my stupor. I look up with unseeing eyes.

?Let me help you, Master,? a broken voice whispers.

?There is no help for me now,? I say. My gaze returns to Tahl?s still hand, where my fingers are twined. ?There is only revenge.?

Then I lay my head on her chest, and the world goes dark.

~The Hunt~

The black hole in the galaxy of my life deepens. Dusk succeeds dawn; the suns rise and set, but I do not heed them. Ever devoted, Obi-Wan never leaves me. Yet I am far from him, wandering in a haze of pain and rage. Only Tahl?s piercing absence and my hunt for her murderers are real.

~Moment of Satya~

At last. My foe lies beneath me. My saber is in my hand. It would be so easy.

A whisper cuts through my haze. Qui-Gon...

I stare at him, as he trembles at my feet. I cannot sink to his level. I cannot kill him.

Slow as death, I lower my green blade. Slower still, I deactivate it.

I am shaking more than he is.

~Light~

Outside the window, the crimson sunrise fades to a cloudless blue expanse. The empty sky reminds me of Tahl. A part of me I?d never thought to know died with her, and I will never be the same.

I take a deep breath, feeling the air seep into all of my being, then letting it go. The desire for vengeance has left me. Tahl?s whisper, and my padawan?s loyalty, have brought me back from the dark. Once again, my purpose is clear to me. I am a Jedi, and my path is the light.

?You knew,? I say as I walk to the window.

?Knew what?? Obi-Wan asks.

?I was ruled by my rage.?

He joins me as I gaze at the sky. ?I knew.?

?But you stood by me.?

?A padawan?s place is at his Master?s side.?

A tear escapes unbidden and trails down my cheek. ?Thank you,? I whisper.

That last line is a killer. Perfect use of a simple sentence as a punctuation.

And that last conversation with Obi-Wan - yes, very nice.

I noticed in your signature you say you're master to someone. Sorry to sound like a total newbie to these forums, but what does that mean?

 

Loved them all. Few words but so meaningful.

 

Aludra, I felt the SAME way a month ago.

 

A Master is someone who looks after a newbie. Teachs them the ropes of the boards, what to expect, what things to avoid. It depends on the Master/Padawan relationship. Some Masters will act as a beta reader, some will not. Some Masters will set tasks for the Padawan or help them with writing skills.
I've been a Master to 4 people and each time it's been different, depending on the needs of the Padawan.
