Bekele to run in 5000-10000 double in Beijing

I'm once again looking forward to the long distance events - one of my favourite moments from Athens was the 5000m final where Bekele, the 10,000m champ and Hicham El Guerouj, the 1500m champ, went head to head, with Guerrouj winning. Should be a good race again this year, especially since Australia's own Craig Mottram is a good chance for a medal.

Yao's been a very public figure associated with this Olympics, though, so it wouldn't surprise me.

 

Am I the only one who finds the opening ceremony a complete bore?

 

They can be. I love seeing the different countries, but don't care for all the dancing and stuff.

So excited! I watch very little of the US coverage since it's so edited and broken up. Luckily I get CBC (Canada!) which shows events much better and in full!

I quite enjoy the opening ceremony. Done well, there's some excellent production in them.

Did anyone else hear that this is the last year for Mens baseball and Women's softball? Is this not new news? I've been fairly out of the loop for a bit.

 

That's really dumb . . . how can you not have baseball and softball? For some countries, football/soccer and baseball/softball are everything!

It's not really news at all. It hasn't been popular world wide, really, and that's the issue. I think they can make a comeback, but it's going to take Major League Baseball and the world's best softball players putting together successful world-wide tournaments and regional tournaments outside of the Olympics, and drumming up interest.

Personally, I'd rather see Golf get a shot in the Olympics that keep trotting out the same 10 nations in baseball, two of which might come from not the Americas.

 

I'd like to see a change in how they do Tennis at the Olympics. I think they should do a mini davis cup type of thing as opposed to a tournament.

The first Olympic event has kicked off with the women's football tournament, two days before the opening ceremony.

 

Ice hockey often starts before the opening ceremony in the winter games.

Also a big match, Germany-Brazil, a rematch of the last WWC final.
