JCer Who Writes the Longest Posts

I mean, it's not that I want to write long posts, or try write long posts, but they just become long posts.

But, what is long? How do you define long? If "long" is simply something of great length, then "long" is nothing more the interpreted electromagnetic signal in your brain that compares the object in question with other objects of the same context, i.e. if you see a post your brain designates as "long" or "lengthy", you must have had some gauge of a standard length of posts, either from past experience of seeing other posts or from your own personal mindset as to what the specifics of a regular post would be.

The structure of the word "long" is as follows:

Linguistics: Having a comparatively great duration. Used of a vowel or consonant.

Grammar: Of, relating to, or being a vowel sound in English that is descended from a vowel of long duration.

In fact, here's a handy Pronunciation Key, which can be found at Dictionary.com. ;) :)

Webster's defines long in a number of ways, twelve to be exact, a few with certain subsections that help us try and figure out what precisely "long" is, and why some are apprehensive as to read-- let alone type-- posts that are marked as "long".

The first example is that of extending or traveling a relatively great distance. Naturally that doesn't help us describe "long" in relation to a post, and neither does its second subsection of having relatively great height; tall.

However, the third subsection does help us in a way: "Having the greater length of two or the greatest length of several. For example- the long edge of the door. That brings us back to our original hypothesis that, in order to correctly identify a post as "long", a standard must be created in one's personal perspective as to what a regular length of such a post would be.

The second definition, "Of relatively great duration," as in "a long time" doesn't help much- a post is not a duration, and though it may take a "long" time to read, it is not a "long" post in this instance.

I skip definition three, describing specific duration, as it gets us nowhere just like number two. Four, five, and six however, do lend some help in our search:

      4. Made up of many members or items, such as in "a long shopping list."

      5.
      a. Extending beyond an average or standard (yes, real proof :D ), such as in "a long post."
      b. Extending or landing beyond a given boundary, limit, or goal, such as in "Her first serve was long."

      6. Tediously protracted; lengthy, such as in "a long speech."

Without even needing to go further, thus skipping sections seven to twelve, we already have the evidence that supports and gives proper credence to our hypothesis. First, that many "members or items" are needed to begin making a post long- letters, words, sentences, paragraphs, all do this job well. Second, that an average, a standard, or a boundary must be created or instated to judge something as lengthy. And, third, that "long" can also be used as an adjective to describe a noun that has been tediously protracted.

That said, I think all three instances occur with this post. My post here, while not excessively, is long. Compared to the standard of my other posts, I would describe it as short, but c
