Well I have not visited these forums in awhile, and I have not sewn either. I am just posting my latest creation, a dress that won 3rd in formal fashions at my school's fashion show ( I made it at christmas time as you can tell from the photo).
But the reason I have not been sewing is... I am going to Zambia next year sd s foriegn exchnage student. The most excitimg part from a sewing aspect is the amazing fabrics found their I am already saving room in my suitcase for them. I hope when I get back I can start sewing agian, but right now I am just getting ready to leave.
For all you who don't know, Zambia is here:
I have a fabric question for you all: I'm working on a tusken raider and am trying to get the fabric this week. I've been looking for a coupon for Joanns and only found an online one at their site so far. It is 40% off any one item. Could anyone tell me if this would work:
It is Unbleached Super Muslin 44'' wide x 15 Yds, 100% cotton, 5.44oz. Per sq. Yd. Cost is $49.99 with 40% off, it would be $30. If a costume uses about 6 yards, then someone else could go in for the other half and it would only be $15 each, plus shipping, with extra for scraps and bandages.
They also have 200 ct. muslin 44" x 25 yards for $90. At 40% off, that's $54 for the bolt.
If 4 people went in, that's $13.50, plus shipping. According to the reviews, it is permanent press and some say it doesn't dye well, others say it does.
***Also, with the 44" width, would we need additional fabric per robe?
A 100% cotton, 6.5 ounce cloth. 84x28 threads per inch Unbleached Duck Cloth 45" Wide 25 Yards-Natural $98.99, 40% off is $60 -4 people @ 6 yards is $15/robe
Note seen on the duck cloth:
Just a heads up on the shrinkage of this fabric. I'm using this for slipcovers. It has a good weight and feels very sturdy but since my intention is to wash them, I prewashed and dried to check for the amount of shrinkage. Plan on 6 inches of shrinkage per yard. Still glad I bought it just make sure you wash it first before sewing!
I'd appreciate any advice on this subject --thanks!
OW's been busy.
[link=http://www.gbprops.com/props/893/]So have I...[/link]
I have a few costumes in the works and I won't get a chance to post completed projects for a while because I'll be away
This is the base of my Gentle Giant Leia costume which will be worn this weekend at Christchurch Armageddon I have boots, wig and belt each half finished and only a few hours really to do them!! Must buy shoe glue...
I'm working on upgrades to my Catwoman costume as well as finishing a Witch Hunter Robin costume for the same convention as well as the one the week later in Wellington.
Yup, very busy weekend. But the tusken is coming along nicely --it should be done by this coming weekend. Just in time for Starfest.
Here it is, in progress: [link=http://new.photos.yahoo.com/obey_wann_ff/album/576460762392745683]Current costumes album [/link]
The Tusken is still very much in-progress. It still needs a lot of work on the weathering and the leather added to the snout. I'll be working on the gaffi this week. I broke my cheapo glue gun last night, so I couldn't finish boot #2. But it is coming along and will be done by this weekend, as long as it doesn't snow again...
I am working on the Aqua Georgette Nightgown for C4. It should be very accurate as I have the design for the embroidery worked out.
So my biggest project for this year was making Eowyn's funeral gown for my aunt and Arwen's coronation gown for myself for my aunt's 50th b-day party. I only got two crappy pictures of them from the party, so I'm hoping to get a chance to make some more decent photo shoots with them later on. (at the moment my gown is home at my parent's place).
As you might see it doesn't have the collar. We tried it and my aunt just didn't fit with a collar, she has a very short neck. And she said herself that she rather looked nice than screen accurate on her b-day. The sleeves were a bit problematic, since the fabric wasn't wide enough but I think they turned out decent.
I was very satisfied with how the dress turned out, it's a bit darker than in the picture. I couldn't afford buying some nice lace fabric for the underdress so instead I just patched on pieces of a broad lace ribbon that I had around and managed to cover most of the fabric that was visible under the overdress. I had planned to slaughter the dress and turn it into something quite different for my spring ball, but now I think I'm going to use it without the overdress and just make minor alterations to it. The crown isn't anything like the crown worn by Arwen but made from some pieces of wire and clay that I had around and painted with gold. I didn't have the time or money for anything more advanced.
My underdress and my aunt's dress were both made from McCall's 4491, and then I just used the finished overdress as a guide when I cut out the overdress.
Great work Obi Anne! You look so lovely.
Yes she does! That is such a beautiful picture of you, you really do look like an elf
Thank you so much.
liannb, Your gown is gorgeous! Love it! Having made that gown too I know how much work you put into it! You look fantastic in it too!!
Had to quote your pics so we could see them in the thread again.
How did I mis this?! Liann, what an amazing dress, and you look so angelic in it. Lovely work .
Crimson: That is such a beautiful dress! I've always thought it was lovely and you've done a fantastic job on it!
I'm trying to get ready for C4. I'm planning on making 4 costumes for it:
- Imperial Officer
- Ceremonial Leia
- New Jedi Tunics
- Anakin Skywalker
As well as a Pirates of the Caribbean costume for the preimere.
This weekend I finished my Imperial Officer uniform and I am so happy because that is one thing off my list.
thank you many many many many hours of work
Jedi-Siri: Nono, the pics I *re-posted* were of LiannB's gown. I 'quoted' the pics.
I did make my own version of the gown:
More pics here: http://www.crimsonvision.net/evergown.htm
I've been making a Tusken Raider, here are the progress pics:
Still no arm or leg wraps, everything else is done AFAIK. (I'm going to try and make a bandolier for across the chest, we'll see if there is time for Starfest this weekend.)
i just put on my original amidala outfit for the first time! it's missing the collars and the sleeves (i need to make more fabric), but i had the hoop skirt, the skirt, the bodice and the headdress on all at once and it's finally looking like a proper gown! suffice to say, it was absolutely magical putting the costume on for the first time. i'm so excited for c4!
my pirates costumes have changed- the wedding dress is on hold while i work on lizzie's new chinese 'brocade' outfit. the hat's done for that one and i'm embroidering the jacket while my leather machine gets fixed. grr...
i would post pics, but i want my amidala to be a surprise and i'm too lazy to post pics and i'm always alone... no one to take any pics... solitary is the life of the sith ... : (
After the convention on the weekend I finally have some pics to share of my latest costumes.
Firstly there's my Cally costume, from Battlestar Galactica, worn on the Sat of the con. Aaron Douglas (who plays the chief) was one of the guests, so I made this one. He was so awesome to meet, and absolutely loved my costume! I haven't scanned int he photo I had with him yet, but I got the most awesome msg on my autograph from him IT's so much fun to be dirty Oh and that's real grease on there, thanks to the flat tire in my boot! I don't have a pic of it, but my butt is filthy I still have to put on the pockets and fix up the undershirts, but I love this costume!
On the friday night and Suinday morning I wore my Eowyn Shieldmaiden dress. It was a last minute addition to my line up, after the announcement of Karl Urban as a special guest ont he Friday night only. Had my photo taken with him, he loved the costume I love this costume too! I'm really happy with how it turned out, and can't wait to wear it again!
This is one of my favourite photos from the weekend
Now to work on my coming projects! Gotta finish Wonder Woman, and a couple of others that I've started!
Great job on the costumes, L_C!!! I absolutely love the BSG ones. Very cool.
We've had two cons over the past month, so I've finished four costumes recently
We had MidSouthCon in Memphis a few weeks ago - I just barely finished my second version of ceremonial Leia for it.
I want to replace the sleeves (don't like them, either the material or the shape), and re-do the neckline, otherwise, I was pretty happy with it!
And I'm very happy with my Alex Ross version of Wonder Woman. The only thing I want to change is the star on my tiara, and to thin out the belt a little in the front (it ended up being too thick through the center)
Also gotta show off my new vibro-axe, I bought it last year, but this was my first chance to carry it
We had MTAC in Nashville this past weekend.
I started making this particular dress (her winter dress) of Belle's a while back (I had hoped to have it done before Christmas), so it just needed to be finished up before MTAC.
And I remade my Utena costume from six years ago. We had some last minute trouble with it, so a few things are going to be replaced/remade before I wear it again.
All of our pics from MidSouthcon are [link=http://flickr.com/photos/kelldar/sets/72157600029630806/]here[/link], and MTAC is [link=http://flickr.com/photos/kelldar/sets/72157600087107609/]here[/link] -- also, pics from the premiere of Heart of an Empire in Jackson, MS, are [link=http://flickr.com/photos/kelldar/sets/72157600041501457/]here[/link]!
I'm going to try to finish my Leia Ewok Village dress and my Padme Sleepless Knights gown next -- both of those I've had half-done for a while now. Then I want to focus on my Padme water dress
Those are incredible pictures!!! ^^ Very nice work!!!
Here are our group pictures from [link=http://new.photos.yahoo.com/obey_wann_ff/album/576460762399190127]Starfest 2007[/link]
Also, Mega congratualtions to Fenig Durak for putting together the [link=http://new.photos.yahoo.com/obey_wann_ff/album/576460762399122040]Spaceballs troupe[/link] --they won Best In Show for the costume contest!!! She is the Princess Vespa. Funny though, she doesn't look druish.
Just thought I would drop and give my first update in a very long time about my 2007 costumes
Trinity Blood: Tres Iqus(canceled)
Loveless: Natsou (75%)
Star Wars Empire Strikes Back: Boba Fett (50%)
The only costume I am really working on is Boba I felt that since it was the 30th I should have a SW costume for it right? LOL
These are the parts I have
Things I have ordered (paid in full) and are waiting to come in the mail
Things I am going to be ordering this weekend (smile payday!!!)
Note: I will get pic's up after I have all the armor parts that way I will look like Boba instead of looking like something that crawled out of the detention block lol

My Catwoman costume, upgraded boots and claws.
Currently stressing about my gown for my elevation to the Order of the Laurel in July. SCA stuff, it's good but a bit of a responsibility
Ummm no idea if I mentioned it here or not, my home partially burnt down and is almost a complete rebuild, most of my costuming has been affected, some to a worse extent than others. I get some of them back tomorrow from the cleaners and I am very nervous about how they have been cleaned.
