    The Match-ups:

    The East:

I know less about the East, but here it goes:

    1. Washington vs. 8. Montreal WINNER: Washington
    2. New Jersey vs. 7. Philadelphia WINNER: Philadelphia
    3. Buffalo vs. 6. Boston WINNER: Buffalo
    4. Pittsburgh v. 5. Ottawa WINNER: Pittsburgh

    The West:

Parity is on in the West, so I went contrarian; none of regular point totals mean much. I was tempted to choose Chicago, but we'll see.

    1. San Jose vs. 8. Colorado WINNER: Colorado
    2. Chicago vs. 7. Nashville WINNER: Nashville
    3. Vancouver vs. 6. Los Angeles WINNER: Los Angeles
    4. Detroit vs. 5. Phoenix WINNER: Phoenix

The positive that I'm taking from the recap of Pens-Sens is that Craig Adams (finally) scored. Last year he had some clutch goals; I hope that he gets his groove back this post-season.

The underdogs all won (except for Phoenix, which is the underdog despite having more points)

It's just game one...I wouldn't be surprised if the favorites had a better outing in their second game.

Probably right; I watched the Vancouver/Los Angeles game and it was a barn-burner, with both goalies in fine form and lots of offence. The West has such parity that anyone could win...the 8th seed winning would not be unjust, or even surprising.

But the East...there's quite a gap between the top four and the bottom four. I suspect that Ottawa may not win another game, mainly because of injuries. Montreal's a bit different; they can go a long way on fumes.

Chicago bites the dust, and the Sens lose. Good Night so far. Now hopefully Phoenix beats the Red Wings again.

Maybe the title should say "Game 1 Upsets".

And do we really need another thread for the playoffs? We've always just used the existing thread and it's been fine.

There was a separate thread for the 2008 playoffs, which is why I opened this one...

There wasn't one last year and looking at the 2008 thread it didn't last through April and pretty much all the discussion that year was in the NHL thread.

    I like a separate thread.

    Obviously. :p

I watched several of the games last night: CBC showed Ottawa/Pittsburgh and then Colorado/San Jose--which was a damn barn-burner.

Some other station showed Philly/New Jersey and then Chicago/Nashville.

You know what? The salary cap has enforced nearly complete parity. Any of these teams could win. Article in the Post today stating that baseball isn't drawing flies, and it's the one sport without a cap. So the rich teams buy the talent and the fans of the poor teams get tired of never winning.

Baseball's more complicated with that with revenue sharing. But, in general, I'd agree. MLB needs a salary cap and floor.

A local Hungarian channel had one an Eastern Conference game on earlier, but I can't remember which teams. It's not the same when it's a replay and you know the score. :(

It wouldn't have been if Nabakov had been on his game for the first 60 mins. At one point he had let in something like 5/12 shots. Just disgraceful. He was lucky the rest of the team was able to step up and keep up with the Avs.
