Arena 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics

Watching NBC prime time coverage now, and what a delightful surprise to see Evgeni Plushenko skate! I hadn't been following any of the lead up to the Games, so I had no idea he would be back this time! Loved his short program...perfect dramatic piece of music for him, and at 31, he proved he can still command the ice like few others!

 

Watching the Mogul skiing is making my legs hurt.

 

I wonder how many of them can even bend their knees when they hit 40.

Coming back from that crash to win two gold medals was amazing enough. Coming back from a motorcycle accident that should have left him with an amputated leg (the doctors would have amputated were it anyone else) to win two more medals Turin is the most incredible comeback in the history of sports.

He hasn't completely hung up his skis, though, he participated in a bet on "Wetten dass" a few weeks ago in which he raced a car down the slope.

Enjoyed the article with the difficulty rankings...though I do think figure skating should have been ranked as more difficult than bobsledding...but then again I'm very biased!

 

Feelings on the Opening Ceremony?

I thought on the whole it was well done. I liked the Russian History presentation a lot. Downside - I found the beginning part with the alphabet a bit tedious. They really made good use of the floor presentation system - I liked that. I thought the London games had a better cauldron for the flame though..

Hiding it as a US friend said it won't air there til later..

 

My favorite sport is ice hockey. I'm so into it that I cry like a baby everytime I watch the Kurt Russell masterpiece, "Miracle." And I rarely shed a tear or even get misty in any situation. I'll be watching as much as I can. You wanna talk hockey? I'm your guy.

I will also watch some curling.

 

Thanks for spoiler tagging that, LAJ...I will be watching the delayed airing on prime time US tv tonight and will chime in once I've seen it. Can't wait!

Y'know, this is the first winter Olympics I've been interested in since Salt Lake in 2002. I watched bits and pieces of the others after that, but couldn't bring myself to care enough.

my favorite part of this opening ceremony was when the giant plexiglass pootin head came down from the sky, opened its mouth, and gassed the entire stadium. very impressive. so olympics.
