Kinda surprised nobody commented on this. Sure his films after The Deer Hunter were flops/terrible, but he still left a mark on cinema. Not sure if it was a good mark.

It's always a sad day when one of The Usual Gang Of Idiots passes away.

 

Tim LaHaye lived a good long life, dying at the age of 90, and my condolences to his family because it's never nice to lose someone you love.



... That being said, that man is responsible for the worst pop culture bastardization of Christian theology ever. The world would be a better place if he'd just lived his life instead of profiting off of what he knew to be a totally non-Biblical picture of "the end times". That's almost certainly not a thing in the Bible, which you may be surprised to hear.

More people read the Left Behind books than actually read and study the Book of Revelations. If they did, they would know that it was written as a metaphor for the excesses of Roman culture at the time, not a literal prediction of the future. And no one even thought it was literal until basically some small groups in the late 19th century. The rapture was a fringe idea that few people embraced in Christianity until these books used it for entertainment and convinced people it was in the Bible somewhere.

And this isn't just an academic point here. Because of the Left Behind series, a huge number of Christians in the US have come to basically shrug off responsibility for the future of the earth and their country.

If you didn't know that those things were such recent beliefs or non-Biblical in origin, well just know that it's as extraneous as all those ideas of a place called Hell we have in our pop culture... Almost none of which are biblical either, but are almost entirely from Dante's Inferno.

So yeah. I'm not glad he's dead, but I really really wish Tim LaHaye had never co-written those books, because they've done legitimate harm to not just Christianity but to the world at large.

Tim LaHaye wasn't so bad, simply writing fan fic based off of fairy tales.

It's not that simple, as LaHaye and his cowriter were presenting it as a dress rehearsal for a prophesied event to be happening sometime in their readers' lifetimes.
Keep in mind that he was selling "Left Behind" alongside such titles as "A Quick Look at the Rapture and the Second Coming", "Bible Prophecy For Everyone", "Charting the End Times", and "The Book of Revelation Made Clear".



Tim LaHaye was the very epitome of the false prophet that Jesus warned about.
