It's like you didn't even read my post properly. I fully acknowledged that Castro was supported by the Soviet Union and I explained in detail why someone backed by the commies ended up being the one to take Batista down. Castro was not "just as terrible" as Batista. That's a great western liberal line for dealing with messy situations without having to commit to anything. I've said it in the previous post: Castro was not a good person. But I've also tried to explain, from the perspective of someone who lived in a third world country, why your suburban expectation of leaders who do improve the lives of their people beyond that of their predecessors that they be "good people" are misguided.

I haven't supported or defended anyone. I gave you an explanation of why your account of Castro were not taking into consideration the full historical context. You lashed out emotionally at the concept that your views might be incomplete/biased. I'm not defending an avalanche by explaining the physics of why it fell, and I'm certainly not defending the avalanche when i acknowledge that it was a little better than the fire it took out.

 

You've explicitly been here defending him. But I'm glad you're so sophisticated and non-"suburban" that you feel comfortable explaining to me, someone whose background you have no idea about, how Castro's death is "bad news" and how all of his assorted ****tiness is okay because he's not Batista. I'm glad you've set your moral standards so high. Oh, I'm sorry, are moral standards so regrettably "suburban"? Okay, I'm glad you're too sophisticated and cosmopolitan to have moral standards. Good for you.

But tell, me, if you're not defending him, why are you calling his death "bad news" and insistently "explaining" the Cuban Revolution to anyone who might have condemned authoritarian thug Fidel Castro, so that they would know that, hey, he was "better" than Batista, by whatever dubious, but no doubt sophisticated standard you're measuring this, and thus apparently immune from criticism?

 

1) Newton's method, buddy. The chances of you being a privileged westerner is far higher than anything else, so I guess that and then adjust. Your reaction to this basically confirmed it.

2) If you could back off from the faux outrage for a minute to actually attempt to discuss this in a mature manner, you'll see that this has nothing to do with me alleged being "sophisticated and cosmopolitan" but me being someone who actually grew up in a third world country, has first hand experience with how governments let you down (in real ways, not western ways), what kind of methods are required in third world countries to actually make the lives of people better, etc. I would think you'd appreciate a perspective that difficult to find in the wild, but I guess being ignorant and manufacturing outrage is the way to go. All you want to do is sit in your ignorance, blindly say someone's death is a good thing, and close your eyes to any attempts at seeing the nuance.

1) Fidel hasn't been in charge of Cuba in a while. His death didn't "better" anything. He was ill and in charge of nothing.

2) I'm explaining something to you because we are on a messageboard and you posted something that was incorrect. You're going to get responded to. If you don't want to be educated on a subject, that's your prerogative. But I am still going to make my explanations for those who do.

3) I have already stated multiple times now that I don't consider Fidel Castro a "good person." But you insist on twisting what I've said to match whatever argument you wish to make. At some point, your accusation that I've been "defending him" is going to turn from incorrect to outright lying. Be careful you don't get there to quickly.
