Her daughter said there will be no book Z. No clue about the notes. Very sad end. So close.

Let's see what surprises 2017 has left, with only more day to go...

John Mollo, aged 86. Mollo designed the costumes for the first Star Wars film and won one of two Academy Awards as a result.

Edit - note that this was in one of today's UK papers but apparently the death occurred earlier this year.

I like that with a galaxy far far away as his canvas, his inventiveness apparently couldn't even stretch beyond 70s fashion. Han Solo is dressed like space Tom Selleck.

I have to disagree; Star Wars as infinite canvas makes no sense. It's a tribute to sci-fi serials, and consequently should mirror the aesthetic conventions typically on display there - current and older fashions altered to seem vaguely space-y, leftover costumes from other productions, and the odd really fanciful design that they blow the budget on. Mollo did a pretty good job on that.

That said I may just be defensive because any costuming Academy Awards given to films that aren't historical pieces must be protected at all costs.

So we're on the final day and a half of 2017 and I've calculated the deaths so far. Unless there is a surprising death soon, the runaway winner will be @VadersLaMent
with 66 points spread among a whopping 5 people! You sure know how to pick them!

    The Top 3:

VLM - 66 points (John Hurt, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Jim Nabors, Hugh Hefner)
Snokers - 23 points (John Hurt)
Bazinga'd - 20 points (Roger Moore, Jerry Lewis)

Well, I knew already, though I don't know if it came up in this thread, that Jaki Liebizeit, the drummer for the 70s experimental rock band, Can, died back in January. What I did not know until yesterday was that Holger Czukay, the bassist for Can, died in September. Can is kind of an acquired taste, but with Liebizeit and Czukay I really think you had one of the greatest bass-drums duos in the history of music. As a guy who tinkers with both instruments, I've always revered them and it's worth a quick note to mention that one of the greatest rhythm sections in history is gone now.

Their second album, Tago Mago, is truly not of this world. Nowhere is the astounding fusion that was Liebizeit & Czukay as well documented as on the eighteen minute work out Halleluwah from that album. Just listen to the first minute and you'll get what I'm talking about.

Got 0 points. I'm glad. It was never a serious list in the first place, and even so I felt guilty posting anything at all.

How am I possibly supposed to reconcile morbid curiosity with ideological repugnance?

Mostly by indulging the curiosity, it seems. Dammit.
