To be fair, I've no idea anything about the guy in Linkin Park. Just assumed he'd be famous. :p

    (I'm terrible at most music)

Yes but at least actual people on these boards knew who Chester was. Literally more JC'ers would know Stéphane Paut, aka Neige, than this Babs Welden, when it comes to the French music scene.

TBF though, the real harm was that a death happened and Juliet wasn't quick enough to announce it. :p

Okay I'm generally pro-notability but I think we should make exceptions for weird coincidences like performers dying while performing.

Well, unless that's technically wacky news.

OK but like Nick Menza died mid performance but people on the boards would have known who Nick was. That's newsworthy.

Barbara Weldens (nice job getting her name right too) had her first album came out last year, when she was 34, in France. No penetration to English markets. She doesn't even have an English wikipedia page.

Having a need to talk about death and disaster and an RSS feed configured to deliver the most up-to-date death porn shouldn't be the basis of the criteria for posting here.

This was literally the first thing I heard this morning when my clock woke me up. I listened to Minutes To Midnight on my morning jog this morning. Outstanding vocalist, he'll definitely be missed. One of the acts which helped me to be a little less afraid of heavier music.

I'm with Ender on Hybrid Theory. I know it's "cool" to be all about how Linkin Park sucked, but Hybrid Theory was a real revelation the first time I heard it. And while I haven't listened to it in years, I have the feeling that it's still an invigorating listen. And DebonaireNerd is right on too when he says Linkin Park was kind of an entry into heavier music. That's how it worked for me too. Hybrid Theory had some intense stuff, but in terms of both musical sound and dark themes, there's a lot of stuff that's way heavier, but the poppier elements of Hybrid make it a pretty effective bridge, I think. But there's a lot of dark stuff on Hybrid or at least faux dark stuff. So, I'm embracing another moment, a moment a lot of people found cheesy; after Hybrid my memory is that the band got very inconsistent, but I still genuinely find Breaking the Habit emotionally moving. Giving that a listen on repeat right now.

Yeah I put HT on this morning and I agree it's still a good listen after all this time. Like KoRn and their debut, though, I just found each subsequent release was less metal and more manufactured, so I am not going to bother too much with the rest of the catalogue.

It's sad enough that Bennington is gone. It gets even sadder when you learn that this happened on what would've been Chris Cornell's 53rd birthday.

Because Bennington and Cornell were very close. Bennington was even the godfather for Chris' son.

My love of Linkin Park started with Minutes to Midnight because, out of any mainstream/top 40 band representing nuMetal, Linkin Park were the ones who stood out as the most enthusiastic when it came to their journey in music. I never liked nuMetal but this band took away some of that mindless vulgarity that prevented me from committing to the genre. But, over the years, i've grown to really love their first two albums. I always the hits from those albums but I think it's just the nuMetal scene itself at the time which stopped me from enjoying the music on its own merit. I'll definitely give their discography a listen over the weekend.

What i've always loved about Chester is his ability to combine harmony with an aggressive and angsty delivery all within one bar of music. Then there's the band's music itself: metal, plastic pop, alternative rock, punk, hip-hop, trip-hop, folk, psychedelia, industrial metal - there's no telling what could come next. One More Light may not have been my favourite release of theirs, but as with any LP release, it had me looking forward to whatever was next because you knew to expect something entirely different. That's what excites me most about Linkin Park and Chester's immersion into various genres.

    This one has hit me.

In fact, I just saw an interview with Mike Shinoda today that suggests that Cornell's own suicide may have driven Bennington to do the same.
