I thought Jacobellis had that sealed. Led for most of the course but Italy got that jump lead then it fell apart. Missed bronze by a board tip :(

Not even a medal for Shiffrin in the giant slalom.

Another 4th. She just barely missed bronze.

I had missed the time for the second run, so I woke up when it was just finished. Even took me quite some time to find the results.
So happy for gold for Frida Hansdotter! To be honest I didn't check the time too carefully, since I was sure that Shiffrin would win this easily, after her GS win I thought she would be unstoppable. Frida has been consistently on the the podium the last two winters, but always behind Shiffrin. If you are going to win one race during the season, the Olympics is one to win.

Awesome short program skate tonight by Japan's Yuzuru Hanyu. Really beautiful.

Must stay awake for remaining skaters....

Stunned about Shiffren in the slalom. Reports she was throwing up beforehand. Not clear whether it was flu or nerves.

She said it felt like a virus and wasn’t nerves in an interview.

Hansdotter has been one of the best of the rest behind Shiffren (and Marlies Schild before that). Great that her perseverance paid off.

Didn’t she also win the slalom globe a few years ago when Shiffrin was injured?

OAR-USA should be interesting on Saturday. Tournament really is kinda wide open. Really comes down whose goaltender gets hot during the medal round.

Yes, she won the globe when Shiffrin was injured. She has been the best of the ones behind the star for a long time, so it's great to see her finally win a gold. I also think it's inspiring to know that compared to all the people from the alps or the Rocky Mountains, Frida's home course is tiny.

That is basically the whole ski slope.

It was quite a bummer to see Mikaela Shiffrin finished 4th in her signature event. Her first run didn't go so well. And her second run, she was as tight on the turns through a couple of gates. There were very brief moments in her second run where her time was good enough for the gold but she just couldn't maintain it until the finish. Shiffrin has a few more events where should could medel. Happy for the winner though.

And being the nerd that I am, I'm so stoke that Yun Sung-Bin rocked the Iron Man helmet for the Olympics and came away with the gold.

Good on Alan Rippon for enjoying and soaking in his time on the ice. Dude is just winning even though he's not a favorite to win a medal.

On the other hand, tough luck of the draw for Nathan Chen to follow Yuzuru Hanyu and his Olympic record of scoring 111.68, which ended is a crowd of cheers and falling Pooh bears. Chen had to feel the pressure of that score, the poor performance in the team competition and the hype he's been getting leading up to the Olympic games. As Tara and Johnny noted, he can't look to his teammates to really get his head right, it's something he has to do on his own. Hopefully, he can just find his groove in the free skate.

Snowboarding is my favorite but I won’t lie ski slope style when done right looks better. All that coptering motion draws the eye.

    Yeah finally.

Talk about a tear jerker. Lindsey and her grandfathers interview. That was some powerful stuff. My eyes. Hopefully she will take that gold in his honor.
