So, tonight is the 30th anniversary of "The Star Wars Holiday Special". Any thoughts? I personally think that while it was pretty corny, it was pretty funny and entertaining as well. So, what do you guys think?

The high point is Bea Arthur singing and dancing with Walrusman.

    Just so you know.

Boba Fett cartoon is the best part, the rest is torture.

The version I watched included a few SW toys commericals, including ones for the carboard cutout action figures.

happy 30th birthday you infamous piece of SW fandom you!

I remember watching it about 10 years ago for the first and only time and the best part is defantly The Boba Fett Cartoon and the first Commercial for the the toys.

It reminds me of when they open the ark of the covenant in Raiders.

I felt like my eyes were going to melt. Could not finish it. Agreed though that the Boba Fett cartoon is the best part.

You know what they say, you haven't lived 'till you've seen twenty minutes of a wookie watching a cooking show hosted by a transexual with four arms making a bantha steak.

I agree with Yodaminch. I've tried watching it on Youtube one or two occaisions. Lets just say that its not on DVD for a reason and leave it at that.

Yep. The best part is Boba Fett riding a dinosaur with a tuning fork which shoots lasers. I couldn't watch any other part of it.

I own a great quality copy on DVD. Although it is very bad, there are some cool parts to it that should be seen by the fans eyes... several deleted scenes from ANH are used in it including a few raw ones of Mos Eisley. The one that I like the best is Stormtroopers stalking the streets and people hiding in the corners afraid (it was to go right before or after the spy in ANH informs the stormtroopers which docking bay the Falcon is in) and several more. Sadly new audio was put over these scenes so they would seem to be made for the special but they're still cool to see.

And there is some funny things to see as well, Harrison Ford looks totally embaraced in all his scenes, Mark Hammil looks ODD, and Carrie Fisher singing TERRIBLY at the end with wookies while the rest of the cast looks like they are trying not to laugh is a MUST SEE! I make my family watch this every X-mas. Its become a tradition (of pain LOL)

    Ain't that the truth [face_laugh]

I had a spell where every time I had a few too many beers I'd end up putting this on and passing out...For that reason alone I find it hard not to feel a little love for this piece of supercrap. And the Jefferson Starship song rocks...no, seriously.

Yea this is pretty bad, almost unwatchable. The only good part is the Boba Fett cartoon, it's the only part that feels like Star Wars, the rest feels likes a cheesy 70's musical variety show crapfest, and of course, that's what it is. The worst part is the full ten minutes of Wookiees saying "Rrwwwrw" and the Wookiee porn and...eh it all sucks except the Boba Fett cartoon.

I don't see how anyone could watch it. It just doesn't seem true to the actual saga.

Everyone looks better in a Halloween Costume

I saw it once just to see it. It wasn't that good. But if it ever officially came out on DVD, I'd get it. :p

I'd rather watch the Holiday Special than all but the best parts of the prequels.

I'm dating myself by admitting that I watched it when it came out. I've forgotten most of it thankfully and seeing it once was more than enough.

What made it soooooooooo horrible was that it came out at a time when everyone was desperate for any more Star Wars. Hideous, horrible, mutant Star Wars was not what anyone needed. Almost more than we could stand.

It's not so bad that it's good.........it's so bad that it's putrifyingly awful.

Except for the Boba Fett cartoon.

I loved when the Wookiees walked into the sun :p Chef Gormuunda was actually a lot of fun and exists in "official" Star Wars canon thanks to I believe a hyperspace article?

And the Black Fleet Crisis novel series actually touches on a few of the aspects of the Holiday Special, mainly Chewie's family and a lot of Wookiee conversation. Re-reading those books a few months back I was giggling at how much I was envisioning the Holiday Special everytime the Wookiees were [talking]:)

As someone pointed out earlier, the many deleted scenes are fun to see. I think its a must for the hard core Star Wars fan.:-B

the most frightening thing about the holiday special to me is Mark Hammill's makeup. I don't quite know how to explain it, but it is truly frightening. Whoever was doing his makeup for that show seemed to actually want to make him look female.

There's an explanation for that. Mark Hamill was in a terrible motorcycle accident, I believe. His face was kind of busted up, so that's why he wore an excessive amount of make-up. You'll also notice that his facial features are slightly different in Empire compared to how he looked in ANH.

I forgot about the motorcycle accident. Still, you'd think they could have made him look less freakish.
