I use A:M for CGI shots, and I kinda was wondering how one might convert *.3ds to *.mdl.

    Read the FAQ about conversions.

Nothing there in the links I could use, and I've already looked for about a month for a plugin...

I thought there was still a demo version of Polytrans/Nugraf or Deep Exploration?? Look for those. That info should be in the FAQ. Otherwise submit this as a request in the REQUEST thread for somebody to convert it for you.

I bet you can, You can use Deep Exploration, it can open .3ds files and convert them to a .mdl format. By the way, A:M is a really bad program, I hate it, but I guess you have to start somewhere.

You might also want to look for something other than 3DS as your go-between format (I'm guessing the original is MAX). By today's standards, 3DS has grown increasingly outdated, and has too many limitations to do any effective conversions with.

We're kinda thinking OBJ is a good replacement for 3DS.

.obj is the best I've seen as a cross app format... would be nice if MAX would support it (of course it might in R6, I dunno)

I've noticed that many programs can't even import .3ds files right anyway. Like Lightwave, it imports some of it with objects in the wrong places.
