Friday May 20 2:59 PM ET

The final chapter of the "Star Wars" movie saga grossed $50 million from its first 24 hours in North American theaters, a record opening-day box office tally, according to estimates released on Friday by studio 20th Century Fox.

"Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith," the last installment in the six-part epic George Lucas launched nearly 30 years ago, surpassed the previous first-day box office record set by "Spider-Man 2," according to Exhibitor Relations Inc.

    Today's on yahoo news:
'Star Wars' Breaks Single-Day Sales Mark

LOS ANGELES - The last of the "Star Wars" movies has done what no movie in history has ever accomplished ? sold $50 million worth of tickets in a single day.

Star Wars: Episode III ? Revenge of the Sith" grossed $50,013,859 from showings at 3,661 theaters and more than 9,000 screens around the country on Thursday, including special midnight shows, according to box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations. That beat the one-day record set in May 2004 by "Shrek 2," which sold $44.8 million on a single Saturday ? its fourth day in theaters.

"It's staggering," said Bruce Snyder, president of domestic distribution at Twentieth Century Fox. "It's probably 20 percent more than I thought we could do."

The George Lucas film, which features the transformation of Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker into the evil Darth Vader, also beat the opening day record held by "Spider-Man 2," which grossed $40.4 million when it opened on a Wednesday last June.

"Fifty million is a good opening weekend, let alone a single day," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Exhibitor Relations. "This is the box office equivalent of a 100-year flood."

The news comes as a relief to Hollywood, which has seen a box office slump for 12 straight weeks.

Theater owners, studios and marketing partners had their hopes pinned on "Star Wars," to kick-start the summer movie season and they weren't disappointed.

The film debuted on 2,900 screens at midnight Thursday. The take from that one showing alone was $16.5 million, which beat the previous record of $8 million set by "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" in 2003.

Thursday's take dwarfed the next highest film, and last week's box office champ, "Monster-in-Law," starring Jane Fonda and Jennifer Lopez. That film grossed $1.5 million on Thursday, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com.

It is almost assured "Star Wars" will push past the $100 million mark for its opening weekend. The record for a three-day weekend is held by the first "Spider-Man," which grossed $114.8 million in May 2002.

ROTS Takes Memorial Weekend with 50M (here)

Box Office Mojo is reporting that Revenge of the Sith won the weekend with an estimated 55M in box office receipts. Sith also scored almost 10M more than the competition when you include the Memorial Day holiday, with a total of more than 70M in the frame. This was a great weekend for Hollywood with Madagascar and Longest Yard all performing above expectations. Worldwide Lucas' Revenge of the Sith has earned over a half a billion dollars.

    ROTS Bumps ROTK

According to Boxofficemojo.com Star Wars : Revenge of the Sith ($377,262,649 in Domestic Grossess) has just jumped ahead of Lord of the Rings : Return of the King ($377,027,325). Sith is now number seven on the all time domestic gross list. Will it ever hit number six? Unless there's a miracle I highly doubt it as there is a twenty six million dollar gap to catch the number six spot, currently held by Spider Man ($403,706,375).

"Sith" Happens at 2005 Box Office
By Joal Ryan Wed Jan 4, 3:41 PM ET
    Full history here.

Hollywood suffered an off year at the box office.

    George Lucas did not.

Lucas' Star Wars: Episode III--Revenge of the Sith, charting the death of Anakin Skywalker and the birth of Darth Vader, was 2005's top-grossing movie, tapping loyalists for $380.3 million, according to the box-office tracking firm Exhibitor Relations.

The film was the only $300 million-plus grosser in a year in which, Exhibitor Relations said, overall movie attendance fell about 7 percent, and ticket sales dipped about 5 percent.

Sith, ostensibly the final chapter in the Skywalker saga, seemed unaffected by the bad box-office vibes. It now stands seventh among the all-time box-office champs, per the stats at BoxOfficeMojo.com.

With Sith leading the way, Hollywood made a lot of money ($8.9 billion) and sold a lot of tickets (1.4 billion) in 2005, per Exhibitor Relations. It just didn't make as much money ($9.4 billion) or sell as many tickets (1.5 billion) as it did in 2004.

Exacerbating the angina among the executive suite set are stats like these: lowest yearly gross since 2001; lowest attendance since 1997; worst ever opening for a Jim Carrey comedy since Ace Ventura: Pet Detective made him a star.

Here's a complete look at 2005's top 10 moneymakers, according to figures compiled by Exhibitor Relations:
    1. Star Wars: Episode III--Revenge of the Sith, $380.3 million
    2. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, $277.1 million
    3. War of the Worlds, $234.3 million
    4. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, $225.7 million
    5. Wedding Crashers, $209.2 million
    6. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, $206.5 million
    7. Batman Begins, $205.3 million
    8. Madagascar, $193.1 million
    9. Mr. & Mrs. Smith, $186.3 million
    10. Hitch, $177.6 million
